Pre-Medical vs Pre-Dental

Interview with a dentist about dental school vs medical school, how he studies, and tips for succeeding as a pre-dental and dental student. The video quality on this isn't the greatest, but I thought the info was too good not to share.

Great advice! I also started out college pre-med, until my RN Mother convinced me to look into dental school - at the encouragement of her physician friends!! ("Your daughter shouldn't go to medical school, she should go to dental school!"). I was also a Chemistry major, and I truly believe this made me stand out as an applicant. Everyone majors in Bio, Chemistry is perceived as a more challenging major. I was fluent in Spanish, another great bonus, especially with patients at dental school at the University of Southern California and pediatric residency in Nevada (University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine, this was pre-UNLV dental school, so that program has since closed). I hope you have videos about the COST of school and how healthcare has changed... Unless your parents are very wealthy or you win the lottery, expect to make a mortgage-sized student loan payments every month. Insurance has truly changed the world of medicine and dentistry, so make sure you're really passionate about working with and helping people. That should be your number one priority. Try to minimize your debt. My advice would be to take as many pre-requisite courses at a small community college as possible. Yes, check your ego at the door and go to community college for 2 years. Earn your bachelors degree from a more affordable state school vs. a for-profit private school. Save your big bucks for graduate school, that's really the only degree your patients care about. Trust me. I feel fortunate to have zero undergrad debt. I also recommend seeking out residency programs that offer good training AND good pay! Don't go further into debt to specialize. The program should pay you, treating patients earns money for the program/and or sponsoring hospital. I matched with my #1 ranking program and it paid the highest. Good luck and best wishes to everyone!

Brian Rochford I have a question.. I originally started off college kind of rough. I was 18 caught up in the College scene and didn't do the best I could and my GPA sunk tremendously and I was a Business major. Not too long ago I got focused and decided to go into Dentistry. I know that it is smart to have the Highest GPA possible starting college but I didn't and I don't want to settle and do something I don't want to do. Do you have any advice? I'm in a time of uncertainty and watching this helped and hearing from you would be highly grateful.

puerto diego I’m kinda nervous about picking this career path. I don’t really feel that I care as much about helping people so much as I do about filling a job I feel I was made to fill. I feel like if I do anything less than dentistry, pharmacy, or chemistry than I’ll be throwing away my potential to live a wealthy relaxed life. Scared that Maybe I’m motivated for the wrong reasons. What made you decide to go down the dentistry path? I’m really just motivated by freedom to work for myself, good pay, and a moderately stressful job.

Through watching your videos on KZread and reading your blog, you have helped tremendously! You are a blessing to many people. I just want you to know that! My question for you is this. How were you able to study/pass your MCAT without majoring in Biology? I know you said that in the beginning of your college career you changed your mind from majoring in Biology to majoring in English. What were helpful science classes that prepared you for your MCAT? Botany, Evolution, Zoology, etc.

Hi! I really hope you see this because I'm a freshman in college and I'm genuinely overwhelmed on my degree plan towards medical school. I'll love to know what you did after your received your undergraduated degree. I know you majored in English. Did you work after that and saved up for medical school? Because i've been in constant battle inside myself to major in nursing so I can work a bit, save up and proceed to med. That would be practical. But, I watched one of your videos and it really touched me into really exploring my college life. If I'm going to spend the rest of my life studying science, why not go into something like Philosophy as a major (which I'm currently considering) then proceed to Medicine. Your answer would be extremely helpful. I ADORE your videos, Andrea. Thank you so much and have a splendid day :)

aMeRiCaNiDoLrOcKz997 Hi! I went straight from college to med school. I had student loans to pay for med school, so I didn't work or save money. I think nursing is an awesome career, but I don't think it's the best pre-med path. Because honestly, you will have to pay for nursing school and if you work a few years to "save up" it might not even cover the cost of nursing school you know? So then you've wasted time and haven't really saved any money... just my 2 cents!!

Hi Andrea! Thank you for replying. Yeah that's true. It's that I came from the Philippines and I got misinformed on what a Premed undergraduate would be there vs here in the U.S. So yes, I don't think I'll take nursing as my premed and I'll look into what else I can major in. Plus, your advice right now seems pretty practical and realistic too. It makes sense. Thank you for all your videos! They've been immensely helpful.

...No, the major difference is that as a DDS you basically run a business, and how much you get paid depends on your business model, and if you specialize, and what procedures you WANT to offer, and these procedures aren't very extensive. I've shadowed several dentists, and the job is monotonous. I've shadowed an oral surgeon, and specializing as a dentist is EVEN MORE monotonous, because you do the same thing over and over... So if you really feel the need to help people, go medical. If you want a relaxing, salary rewarding, and a heck of lot less stressful job then dental. Also medicine in USA is changing rapidly, so it's something to keep an eye on. Something you can do is a dual degree (6 years) and get a MD, and a DDS. I know an oral surgeon that did this, and if you choose to you can perform head neck surgeries through this route. Personally, I like money and a relaxing life so i'd choose dentistry for sure... People just look at big salaries of surgeons and want to be doctors, but the job is way more stressful.
