I witnessed this in action as little girl been scaring ever since.. I found a large green praying mantis outside and I put it in an aquarium to feed and keep as a pet.. A week later I found a smaller brown one and thought hey two mantis they can be friends I put them together in a large aquarium then I can home from school to check on them and the male was walking around without a head for a rather long time and female had laid an egg sack.. I had a melt down. Not long after the female slowly died.. I did get to see the babies hatch and released them outside. Definitely not something I was prepared to see as child without warning..

Male:Pull my antennas daddy Female: *accidentally rips off his head* Female: ....

When I was a kid I went outside and found hundreds of baby mantises, it was seriously the cutest thing I've ever seen. I'm sad though because I used to find them every single year in my garage and on my car. I haven't seen one in two years.
