1. Mrs Adam is a Claire’s landlady. That’s why Claire could not say no when Mrs Adam asked her to take care about Ceasar 2. Claire could not cheer Ceasar up 3. When Claire once came to feed Ceasar she find a terrible mess that made Ceasar. And it was the worst mess Claire had ever seen 4. Claire managed to fish her phone out of the pocket and called her friends. She wondered if Sarah or Jack were able to help her with the cleaning. And Jack arrived soon and help her. Claire couldn't cheer the cat up. 3.The day before Mrs. Adam's coming back Caesar made a terrible mess in the apartment. 4. Jack helped Claire a lot. So they managed to clean the apartment quickly. 5. Claire is happy 😁 because she was able to help Mrs. Adam and also benefited financially from it.

Thank you for the lesson. 1) Why couldn’t Claire say no to Mrs. Adam? Because Claire got a message from Mrs. Adam when it was saying that Mrs. Adam’s mother had some health problems and Mrs. Adam had to go away to her mother. That’s why Claire couldn’t do it... Because it’s hard to refuse a person who in a situation like this and Mrs. Adam promised to reduce her rent for the apartment. 2) Could Claire cheer Caesar up? Claire did the best way she could, but Caesar just missed his owner. Eventually, she didn’t manage it. 3) What happened with the apartment when Claire once came to feed the cat? Claire once came to feed Caesar and she saw a terrible mess she had never seen before. The cat managed to do it. 4) How did Claire manage to clean the apartment quickly? She called by phone to Sarah and Jack and then Jack arrived quite fast to help Claire to clean up the apartment quickly as fast as they could. As I understand Sarah hadn’t been able to arrive. 5) Why is Claire happy? So, Claire is happy because they managed to clean up Mrs. Adam’s apartment and she got reducing of cost for the apartment where she rents it.

You can also say like that. It's just another variant.

Эта тема рассматривается только в разделе "reported speech" (Косвенная речь), где-то в конце 40-х юнитов. Больше Мерфи об этом не говорит

Спасибо большое за урок! Пару вопросов. Managed to это больше в сторону как бы совершившегося действия, то есть "справиться с чем то", а be able to это больше как "вопрос", "иметь возможность сделать что-то"? В предложении I wouldn't be able to do it without him мы не можем использовать managed to? Или нам мешает would? I wouldn't manage to do it without him - так нельзя? Спасибо.

I wouldn't manage to do it without him - так тоже можно. Manage не всегда говорит только о прошлых событиях.

the best way I could - между way и I не нужна какая то частица вроде that ? если ее поставить это будет ошибкой?

А в будущем есть разница по смыслу в использовании be able to и manage to?

почти нет разницы will manage to - смогу, сумею will be able to - смогу, получу возможность

Елена, спасибо за отличные уроки. У меня вопрос по предложению We managed to finish before she arrived. А не лучше ли использовать past perfect, акцентируя внимание на то, что они закончили перед тем, как она пришла? We had managed to finish before she arrived.

Чаще скажут, конечно you smell it

1. Claire couldn’t say no to Mrs Adam because Mrs Adam was Claire’s landlady, and Mrs. Adam's mother had some health problems. 2. Claire tried to take care of Caesar the best way she could, but she couldn’t cheer him up. 3. Once when Claire came to feed Caesar, she found the worst mess she had ever seen. 4. She asked her friend Jack to help her with cleaning, and together they managed to clean the apartment as fast as they could. 5. Claire is happy because in gratitude mrs Adam lowered the rent for Claire by 200 $.

Да, так тоже можно. Но доступны оба варианта.

Did I tell you about the letter from my landlady Mrs, Adam? She asked me If I could take care of her cat while she was away . Her mother had a some problems health of course I couldn’t say "NO'" in this situation . I took care of Caesar so hard as I could but I couldn’t to cheer Ceaser up. Apparently he missed to Mrs, Adam. Everything was going well but after some time Ceaser getting sad . One day I came to feed him and I saw a horrendous mess . I still wonder how one cat can to make so terrible messy I had never seen before .

Отличие could и was/were able to распространяется на отрицательную форму данных глаголов?

Есть оговорки I couldn't используется, когда вы чего-то не умели I wasn't able используется, когда вы не смогли чего-то сделать (не значит, что не умели, просто не получилось). по разному переводится, надо на контекст смотреть

1. Mrs Adam's mother had some health problems, Claire just couldn't say no in a situation like that. 2. No, she coudn't. Caeser got really depressed in some time. 3. She found a terrible mess. 4. She asked Sarah and Jack for the help. 5. Because now she pays 200 hundred dollars less for her rent.

Технически верно, но смысл-то другой.

I managed to fish my telephone out of my pocket, wondering if Sarah and Jack were able to help me with the cleaning. не могу никак врубиться почему were. вроде понятно что нельзя сказать о будущем, но я не могу понять, как это говорить о будущем событии используя прошедшее - were? мозг отказывается понимать. help

Технически: оборот be able to, be будет меняться. Оно меняется на am/is/are, чтобы показать будущее из НАСТОЯЩЕГО Оно меняется на was / were, чтобы показать будущее из ПРОШЛОГО.

I know little about how much you have to pay for rent in different places in the USA. I heard that in New York it might be 3000$ per month or even more. That's a daylight robbery.

1. Claire couldn't say no, because Mrs. Adams had to go to her mother, who was having health problems. Claire couldn't say no in that type of situation. 2. No, she couldn't, because Caesar was in a big depression. So nobody, except Mrs. Adams, could cheer him up. 3. The apartment was in a massive mess, so Claire hadn't seen anything like that before. 4. Claire phoned her friends and one of them helped her. 5. Because she made everything right, everyone was happy and she got 200 bucks off her payment.
