Prairie Strips - Bringing Back the Edges

Small strips of prairie along the edges of row-crop fields can provide wildlife habitat, prevent erosion, improve water quality and add beauty to a farm. Farmer Dick Sloan and landowner Gary Guthrie tell the story of why they planted prairie strips on their land, how they manage the strips and the results they have seen from implementing this practice in this episode of Bringing Back the Edges: Creating Wildlife Habitat on Farms.

You cant solve the worlds problems, to many non cooperative governments and big so called businesses, but you are certainly doing your bit. A brilliant project which must be kept going. More films on this and well done all of you, best wishes from here in the UK. Regards Alan.

If only you could actually get all the monoculture farmers in Iowa to use prairie strips. It's not really a new thing. There used to be a lot of prairie strips between fields when I was a small child because farmers at that time cared about the land and understood the benefits. Now its all fencepost to fencepost farms and half the fields get flooded when it rains because theres nothing to take up excess water. We need a thousand more guys like this in Iowa. I wanna give these dudes a high five.

Great project, but wouldn't the pesticides being used for the monoculture farm, kill the wildlife?
