Here in upstate New York I lived on a farm about 30 years ago. The place was overrun with woodchucks. I got me a lever action Winchester 22 magnum in a 3 x 9 scope. And that summer I killed 82 woodchucks. Most of them between 120 to 150 yards.

Great shooting. Too bad about the caliber restrictions from the landowner but still a good deal. I live in upstate NY so prairie dogs are not a problem but we have plenty of woodchucks (ground hogs). I pop em with a 17HMR but just bought a Savage 223 that I'm looking forward to trying. Maybe even see a big fat New York yote on the farm where I hunt.

I try and shoot everything that pops up in a fan shape out to about 100 yards and then when there are no shots for about 15 minutes, then I relocate to another section of the field or just call it a day or go to a different location in the afternoon.,, but my eyes can only take so much of looking thru a scope, binoculars, rangefinder and zooming a camera in the glare if the dessert sun with the mirage dancing all around.

Memories. In the late 1050's at my uncles ranch on the Texas border in S.E. New Mexico my dad would set up a shooting table in the back of an old military 6 X 6 a couple hundred yards from the prairie dog town(s). We we reloading all our ammo and the 270 with heavy barrel and a scope I could pope the heads off the little buggers. I was astounded to see a thriving dog town on the edge of a residential development with CHILDREN in S.E. Denver. Rodents with disease?????

I have hunted ground squirrels, specifically Beldens ground squirrels in N. Calif and SW Idaho. Locally they are known as "squeaks", or "whistle pigs" and I think they are a little smaller than the Prairie Dogs. Normally shoot with 17HMR, or .223 when I am reaching out beyond 200 yards. Good video, makes me want to get out shooting again. In N. Calif they are found in Alfalfa fields and cause a lot of damage. In Idaho, they are in the grass lands often on BLM land.

In 2003, forty-seven confirmed and probable cases of monkeypox were reported from six states-Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. All people infected with monkeypox in this outbreak became ill after having contact with pet prairie dogs. The pets were infected after being housed near imported small mammals from Ghana. This was the first time that human monkeypox was reported outside of Africa.

Man that first segment was a little brutal. The 17 seems to either be better for you, or better for the job, cuz you were getting way more efficient lethal hits. I’m all for hunting and pest control, but it isn’t their fault, so we should do our best to do the job as quickly and cleanly as possible. As for monkey pox, I wouldn’t worry too much if I was you. First of all, scientists could find moon dust up their butts if it could be shocking enough to get some grant money, and second, this is mostly (though not all) in the gay community. It’s one of those "you get it from extended skin in skin and or body fluids" sort of a thing. I mean at least for now. Maybe it’ll change, but hasn’t so far.
