Hello Dylan, Hans from Holland here; the one from Dordrecht. Not the one from Wilsum, who brought you the booze a few years back. I wondered whether GTL-diesel (GasToLiquid) is sold in the UK? It's diesel made out of natural gas and it does not smell. Also less CO2 and less sulphur. Most engines run smoother on it than on normal diesel. In the Netherlands, it's only a little more expensive than the regular stuff.

Dylan, Sorry for your engine issues, but the bacon/garlic sounds like a win win solution. I'd add some good bread, to fry up in the bacon grease, after the eggs are just done. We don't have Cuokoos here in northern California, but the sound of your voice just took a load off my day. I've never had a sailboat engine that wasn't an ordeal.

It isn't a leaky 40 year old exhaust hose, perchance? I inspected mine a few years ago when she smelled bit like old tailpipe. The hose needed replacing, but the surprise was when I grabbed it back through the cockpit locker, and the stainless exhaust skin-fitting fell apart.

Unless you are over sensitive to the smell of diesel you may well have leak somewhere either with the fuel system or the exhaust. As said, the outboard may well be fine when you are up the creek but not get you far at sea into a headwind. A 25hp Honda might.

I have had the boat for a year now. It came with pre-installed diesel bug which I have eradicated with marine 16. Took three tanks of fuel and many engine stops and filter changes but it all runs sweetly now. I have tracked down all the diesel leaks - one at a time. The installation is 50 years old... the engine is about 20. The problem with the boat is that the volvo gearbox has done the volvo thing and rusted through so when I run the engine the gearbox leaks cooling water contaminated with gearbox oil into the bilges where it slops around and that is now my main source of smell. The gearbox dumps about five gallons of water into the bilges during a day run and about 100 mil of gearbox oil. Solving the other leaks was quite hard. Now she is demanding a new gearbox - needless to day. The 6hp shoves the boat along briolliantly 25hp would be overkill.

Perhaps an electric inboard would be a good option? Sure, range in the form of a bunch of ready-made lithium batteries is a bit expensive, but DIY lowers the price a fair bit. And you can always add something like 2-3kw petrol generator like for example The Rigging Doctor /Sailing Wisdom did years ago. The recently posted a couple of videos about how they built their own lithium battery bank and got a significant performance upgrade :) I'm planning on electric conversion for my Volvo 110 S-drive, sold the MD11C diesel and looking at 10kw BLDC motors :) should be able to get good propeller regen with the speed capabilities of my Wasa 55 as well :)

@@dylanwinter2138 go for it :) For sailor that actually prefer to sail, an electric motor is probably perfect. Where is local to you, if I may ask? Always nice to see that companies are offering such solutions. There is a company here in Sweden that offers a conversion kit for saildrive with motors from I think 3 to 20kw. Don't know their prices yet, but I plan to talk to them :)

I feel up to speed know, it was the one with the whale on the bow. It definately looked like it needed work, but the cheapest F25 on the market at the time. There is a couple in France for 25k and they still have the old MD2 diesels. All old boats need money throwing at them unless meticiously maintained, and at that price.......get what you pay for is a true saying.

I drove from Cornwall to Stockholm with a 3.5 ton trailer and a Range Rover, and when i got there to collect the boat, he said a Dutch guy had offered more money, so I had to increase my offer! Is the Volvo box saltwater cooled? Get rid of it Almost every dingle Ive ever seen has issues. There must be a myriad of small and better boxes over there in the UK that dont have saltwater running thru them Hurth, ZF, Kansaki, PRM/Newage and thats just 4. If its a mechanical box then cooling isnt really an issue. If you go hydraulic then a small oil cooler will need to be fitted but its not really a big job at all once the box is bolted up properly yo the bellhousing.
