Praggnanandhaa permits an Alpha Zero Pawn - 2024 FIDE Candidates

Featured is the dynamic chess game between Vidit Gujrathi and R Praggnanandhaa from Round 3 of the 2024 FIDE Candidates. Praggnanandhaa unleashes an atypical variation of the Ruy Lopez at the highest level, playing the Delayed Schliemann Defense. Praggnanandhaa allows Gujrathi to establish a white pawn on e5, a favorite post for a white pawn in the eyes of Alpha Zero. The play of Praggnanandhaa out of the opening is quick to not only hunt Gujrathi’s light-squared bishop, but also challenge the ever-menacing Alpha Zero Pawn. Really impressive game by prag! I love that after his loss in round 2, he came back in round 3 with an aggressive opening as black

That "alpha zero" pawn was everything... team white should have defended that pawn as much as possible. It was a "paralysing pawn" for team black. Once removed... team black would be very much relieved.

Hey jerry at 6:30 you said if he takes with the queen than pawn moves 2 squares attacking the queen and after the queen moves the bishop gets smother so he took with the knight , ,,why cant he do the same if knight takes

  • @ChessNetwork

Bb7 sets up this possibility, otherwise white could first exploit the unprotected d5-square. There are more in-between moves for white(Bd5 or Bxg8) when c5 is played attacking the knight rather than the queen. I intended to point this detail out but it slipped my mind. Good question 👍
