The way she made an "oohooohooo" sound while signing "owl" was so cute!

I love kid signs.❤ The “mistakes” they make while learning is sometimes verrrry funny.😂 (Much like me when learning to sign- and even occasionally now!😂) Hearing kids benefit from learning to sign just as Deaf kids do. And even better, they learn early how to communicate with Deaf people throughout their lives… something I wish to see in all early childhood education. Can you imagine how many barriers would be eliminated if ASL were a standard part of all early childhood education in the US? ~sigh~ I used to be a TA in a preschool class of all deaf kids. Beautiful, intelligent, sweet, fun & funny kids. Best job I ever had.❤ (Too bad it’s nearly impossible to support yourself on the low pay for such jobs.☹️) That job was also heartbreaking sometimes as some parents refused to learn ASL because some ignorant doctor (or similar “professional”) told them NOT to use sign language because “they’d never learn English” (reading and writing). Which a TON of evidence has shown to be the *opposite* of the truth. (Can’t learn a second language -English- until you’ve got a good foundation in your native language- ASL!) So some of those kids had NO WAY TO COMMUNICATE their basic needs with their own parents. Like “hungry,” “potty,” “hurt.” Those same parents thought their kid/s were just being “naughty” or “stubborn” or had “behavioral issues.” But the issue was simply that they needed a way to communicate with their own parents and have their basic needs met.💔💔💔 I was often the first person to use sign with them an teach them those crucial basic signs. They blossomed and beamed in an environment where *everyone* signed and all their needs were met. It made my heart break almost daily to know they’d go home to parents they couldn’t communicate with who thought they were just “problem kids.” It also set those kids up to be vulnerable to all kinds of abuse in the future (near and distant) because they had no way to tell an adult who could intervene and help. More heartbreak.💔 I wanted SO badly to have *that talk* with those parents, but I was not legally allowed to. I still think about those kids and wonder how they are today. I hope and pray they got what they needed to thrive and they’re ok.
