    As a student pilot with just over 4 hrs these videos are great. It's like being in the backseat and learning from both success and areas of improvement. I applaud you both for putting this out there. Pilot debriefs are how we learn and this is a great way. Thank you!

    Great video Josh. Hagen is coming along nicely. Even being post initial solo XC, I still have landings that I am not proud of. My instructor says I'm to hard on myself. 😂. Keep up the excellent work. Safe skies my friend 🇺🇸🛩️

    great vid with Hagen. I see mistakes that I was still making at, like, lesson 12. I like how you choose what to teach and what is good enough to ignore. 10:10 "that guy has a strange accent" .. that's what I think watching y'all :) 34:50 ghost trim 64:00 butter!

    @FreePilotTraining it was amazing. It definitely gave me the confirmation I want to do this. I have only one question. I see discovery flights where its like a mini lesson where the instructor lets you do at least a couple things. The guy gave me the discovery flight sat in left seat and basically took me sight seeing.

    The VFR sectional doesn't tell you the TPA. You can guess based on the field elevation and assume that it's 1000' AGL, but you are guessing, and that's a real bad habit. I know that you knew the actual TPA, so it wasn't actually a guess. If you really went to an airport that you were not familiar with, you would actually need to check the A/FD to find the TPA, among a sea of text that I would not want to read in-flight, so the ForeFlight airport tab is pretty useful to find that info quickly. But, I would say the real bad habit is not having researched the destination airport before T/O.

  • @FreePilotTraining

    @FreePilotTraining

    Well, actually the “Chart Supplement” (AFD is the old name) rarely gives you the TPA. They only give you that information if the pattern is something other than 1,000 feet AGL. I totally agree that you should look at the chart supplement for every airport you fly into before arriving, but there are times when that isn’t possible. Especially in divert scenarios. And by the way, I love the ForeFlight tab, but that does not always mimic what is in the chart supplement. The VFR sectional is an official document. ForeFlight is not. And checking ForeFlight instead is a bad habit because ForeFlight can take a dump on you when you need it the most

  • @geekmug

    @geekmug

    8 ай бұрын

    There was a 2018 decision to only publish TPA in the chart supplemental if it's not 1000' AGL, but there are still plenty out there for various reasons -- something like 1 out of 5 public airports. My home airport and the next nearest are at 800' AGL, so you would be above pattern and descending into the pattern on downwind if you guessed. 80% of the time, your guess would be right, but on the other hand, ForeFlight's airport tab is populated with the data from the FAA's eNASR database (also the Jeppesen database), which is the exactly what is used to print VFR sectionals and chart supplementals. I'm not saying don't check the VFR sectional to get situational awareness about the field elevation, which is what I think you were trying to teach him, but I don't think it's right to say that's all you need. There are other ways to find out the TPA (e.g., make a radio call), so it's all a bit academic to talk about ForeFlight taking a dump (how are you reading that VFR sectional anyways?). Overall, great food for thought and I appreciate you allowing us to ride along!
