The Flight Was Going Great Until... | Piper Cherokee 180

Note: Editing removes context, this video is strictly for entertainment purposes.
Was having a pretty routine day until having my first real aborted takeoff. Luckily it was no issue and I just had a self no go event that needed to get solved before heading out again.
The trim indicator was not functioning correctly but the trim was. The trim was way forward and was taking a long time to come back and I rather just double check the plane than assume that's what the issue was.
Piper Cherokee 180.
I'm well aware of my struts.

Hey Luke, I really like your videos and your easyness (sorry if I am using the wrong word) about flying. It is still very professional yet refreshing to see someonebeing a bit more laid back. I hope to see more of you in future. Give me a shout when you plan to come to Europe, I will take you for a tour here :-)

I appreciate this. I try to remind people that flying safe and trying to be professional can be a lot of fun and enjoyable, doesn’t have to be dangerous to be fun. I have more vivid memories of catching a good wind, or having a smooth landing than I do of doing aerobatics or flying something fast.

That was amazing!! Super entertaining to watch. You should consider doing a full flight with either a POV camera or a camera on the ceiling. There aren't like any full flights in this plane 😭😭. I feel like your commentary would keep it entertaining for the people who don't find the raw footage of this plane entertaining 🙄

Kudos for paying attention to the details. I recently had a first flight after an annual, doing the take off run, I was fully prepared and expected to abort takeoff .. but was still surprised when I actually DID abort. The mental part surprised me after the fact. I couldn't see why in the gauges, but something felt/sounded off. It was later verified via engine data, but .. it was the right call. Simple issue and resolved with additional run up time to move more oil to the prop that was a tad dry after some work. The harder part was the PIC decision on next steps. Trust the machine. Trust the process. Trust your experience. Next run sounded and felt right. She flew like the stable, smooth platform she always had before. Numbers were good AND felt right.

Luke, I like the videos! I have a 73 PA28-180 I recently bought and have the same issue with the struts compressing and popping up when they want. What causes it? I'm about to service the struts to see if new 5606 solves it. Looking forward to hearing from you!

The seals in the struts may be done. Luckily they are pretty cheap to replace. It may also just need more nitrogen. Ask your A&P to check it out and I think it would be like $20 a strut for the rebuild kit, so prolly like $200 a strut in total or something like that after labor.

Great video! I noticed you switch tanks in traffic pattern. I was taught that tanks get switched on ground or a few thousand feet up. I assume the rationale is that in the pattern you are within glide distance of a runway, so it's safe to switch tanks? Not criticizing the approach, but it just goes against what I was taught.

  • @lukeslanding2230

You were taught correctly. This was a discontinuity with my verbal callouts. I always look at the switch and put my fingers on it to mark it in my memory. I called out switch tanks when I meant to say we're on fullest tank.

The PA28 has plenty of elevator power to allow very clean and accurate mains wheel landing's followed by the nose wheel. Why would you want to land on the 3 wheels when it was never designed to do that. The PA28 has enermous pitch and trim to resolve any kind of landing. Despite the fact that the Cherokee is a tri gear aircraft all the landings need to be done onto the mains followed by an elevator let down onto the tri front wheel.

  • @lukeslanding2230

The strut seals were to be replaced on this airframe so I had to ensure I landed at the lowest touchdown rate I could without any stalling above the runway. The struts are fixed now but at the time, it wouldn’t have been good aiming for a stall out landing on the main at any height more than a couple feet. Also, the 140’s and 160’s, you can hold the nose off but this one runs out of elevator authority near stall. You can’t hold the nose off unless you load. But single pilot full fuel, it does not allow for this.
