    The best thing I got out of this video was the trick of removing flux from the center of the rod to make it less "flippy". Dang, I've been cutting the rods in half, then removing flux from the cut end (factory end is OK on the other piece). Now all I have to do when using more than one "short" stick is to just flip the rod over in the stinger. Thanks for the tip, Mancub!

    Good job. We had to do that test and three others except we done it in 6G and we had to make a three stringer cover. We did that and a tig root a 6G.a unlimited in 6G with a tig root on a 6 inch pipe, and a 10 in with a stick root flip test. We had a three year clock. Plus all the other certs we needed stainless ,mig. On pipe . Loved that job retired now. Every welder does things a little different but that's close to what I did. I liked a smaller keyhole then you, i seem to have more control, and it slowed things down for me. Great video I enjoyed it. You are fun to watch.

    While there is a lot to be learned from these well-prepped fit ups using "modern" welders, I'd like to see tips and tricks for welding the likes of 2" barn/pasture fencing with an old-school Miller 225 Bobcat (or something similar). Typically, the pipe is nasty and often magnetized. The saddles are rough cut with a torch. So essentially, just about the opposite of a nice shop or commercial job. Love your SMAW videos. Stay safe!

    Well idk if you listened to Bob but he seems like a person that learned traditionally . Im not sure he fit with the idea of KZread and being able to have numerous videos on different types of welds/weaves. You know sometimes as humans we like to over complicate things to sell and market more complex ideas/machinery. In the words of bob " Keep it simple."

  • @JonDingle

    @JonDingle

    @@bbrill9886 I would agree Bob's style was quite formal, direct and no nonesense. Exactly the right style for pupils/studdents to respect and listen too because teaching a skill requires a formal approach in my opinion. I am not saying Mancub or anyone else isn't good enough, but the over easy style Mancub has is a bit too casual (possibly the wrong word?) for me. We all respond differently I suppose to tutors and tutorials.

  • @Choldjonesy

    it doesnt depend on the rod you're using. i run 1/8th rod for a 1/16th gap pipe. it just depends what youre comfortable with. Tig welding has an even bigger gap normally.

    So, at the 10 minute mark on the root pass, on the side facing the camera is that a crack along the top of the bevel down into the weld? Or is that a sharp ridge from grinding the weld? It looks like a crack from my view.

    A while back viewers were asked what welding issues they were having. Note: I am not a professional welder just retired hobbyist. If you are open for one of my many issues here it is: using either TIG or MIG when I try to weld a much thinner metal to a thicker one I usually end up cremating the thinner one. I have seen videos where the heat is to be more directed to the thicker one, but it seems when I try to blend in the thinner part I burn through. If heat is lowered it does not seem to be enough for the thicker piece. Maybe it is just a lot more practice, but any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

    I’ve had luck doing what you said by keeping the heat on the thicker piece. If the two pieces are drastically different then it may be damn near impossible. I just keep an eye on the puddle and dip it into the thin piece quickly then back to thick. They always say practice practice practice!

    Yeah I figured you were. I am too, I work for a new car dealership and my 77 year old father lives with my wife and I. She works at the dealership also. She’s been laid off with pay from the dealership, and so have I. She gets bronchitis, pneumonia every year. She got pneumonia when it hit our area, doctors wouldn’t treat her, scared she had the virus, got sent to emergency room, they wouldn’t treat her, said they were only treating people dying or on their deathbed. It really woke me up, I was thinking this is a big joke until they take your wife back in hazmat suits pretty much. The manager keeps bugging me to come back to work, no health insurance, no thank you, the owner made a deal with and I’ll probably ride it out till it calms down. My dad has leukemia so he’d probably die from it if he was to catch it. He ain’t worth a little more money. Sorry for the tangent, but some people just see what’s up til it affects them like it did me when my wife went to the hospital. Also they said she could have it, take these meds and it you don’t get better then go to a bigger city and get hospitalized there where they have sufficient test equipment. Took her 3 weeks to get back to a 100%. Thanks for giving us something to watch mancub. He might even get better than you redbeard by the time you get back lol, probably not! Thanks again!
