Practical Magic is a fun movie. It somehow manages to be both kind of dark, but also quite wholesome. Definitely worth doing a movie commentary and reaction for because there were so many things to talk about with this 90's classic! Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are fantastic and we even get a very young Evan Rachel Wood!
For our next movie commentary and reaction we're doing Pretty in Pink!

They did address it in their commentary and stated how considering how small the town is and how he probably isn't a favorable guy, his death may not bring as much attention. I also think there has to be a spell to hide a body. Seems like a waste of a ritual since they just ended up killing him anyways.

I think you guys missed it but yes, they did break the curse at the end when Sally cut their hands and joined them together. In that little memory montage that happens you can see a clip of their ancestor Maria being "set free" in a way. It's symbolic for how the love between sisters is above any love for a man and how by saving each other, they're really "saving" all the women in their family.

A few points you missed because you talked over them: - As others have said, they initially tried to bring Jimmy back because they wanted to avoid becoming criminals. - Sally explained to Gary that part of the Craft is belief giving power to symbols. His badge is just metal, but because it is a SYMBOL that he believes gives him strength and authority (the Sherriff's star), it has power against lawlessness and evil. This is why it repels Jimmy's ghost. - This same line of reasoning is also how Gary makes the logical leap later that curses, like symbols, only have power when you believe in them.

In the book, the lady that requested for the spell got some real karma. The wife of the guy she stole fell into depression. The guy basically became a lapdog. He follows her like a shadow. The woman said she doesn't even have time to pee anymore because he always wants to f*ck. He basically became annoying and lost all his personality. The woman went to the aunts but found Sally and Gillian (they were still kids then). She physically attacked the girls when they said the aunts weren't home. The aunts were so pissed that they hexed her so whenever she speaks only chicken and bird noises come out of her.

I think this is one of those movies that the more u watch the more things u realize, like how it's heavily implied that the mom actually killed herself after the dad died... or how when they're doing "margarita at midnight" they're not just shouting out offensive stuff because they're drunk but because they're having fun with a "truth potion" in the margarita, so that's why they can't control the hard truths that come out of their mouths and instead of getting hurt they laugh it off. This is still one of my fave movies from childhood, thank you so much for reacting to it! It really made my day! :D

Lol, I hear you. There are a lot of the same comments. I figure that since abusive partners can be a personal and painful subject, hearing someone shaming Gillian for "wanting him back" makes folks touchy, especially since that's not at all what was happening. With the margaritas, Jimmy materialized the bottle on their front porch. Or maybe he used the frogs to get it from the car and move it, lol. Either way, when the aunts used it to make the margaritas, once they drank it, he was influencing them. That's why they got so mean with each other. It was only when the aunts started singing his song that Sally and Gillian realized what happened. When Gillian broke the bottle, it woke them up out of Jimmy's trance.

Others have said it, that they were trying to bring him back because they would be the obvious suspects for his murder, because they were terrified, scared, hyped up on adrenaline, amazingly enough people in a panic who just when through something traumatic, tend not to make the best decisions in those moments. I also want to add that I'm not sure you guys got that this film/story really is more metaphorical. I feel like yall took some aspects a little too seriously/literally. Everything about him haunting them, primarily Nicole, was a portrayal of how abuse "haunts" people afterwards. It was the story of a man who was severely abusive, and even after he was gone and she was safe from him physically, the abuse stayed with her, the trauma doesn't go away with him. Leaning on the people she loved, reaching out, asking for help from others instead of hiding away and fearing who you are and what you've gone through, that saved them.

I remember being 7 years old in my parents’ bedroom flipping through the channels and coming across this movie. I just couldn’t look away. The scene with Jimmy’s ghost might’ve scarred me for a few years but now it’s one of my fav yearly Halloween movies and I’m always quoting it with my best friend. I’ve always dreamed of recreating the aunts house. I’d love to live there❤️

I always thought that their reason for bringing him back was because they'd murdered him. They didn't want Sally to lose her kids when she gets locked up for murder. I'm also worried that your pasta sauce is very thin, as that ghost-broth looked nothing like what I consider pasta sauce! And "90s as fuck" is exactly how I like my movies! I'm so glad you're on this era.

So the reason why Jillian said sally was wasting herself is because sally is far more powerful magically but she is super introverted. The aunts cast a spell for her to fall in love otherwise she would never have dated anybody. The aunts cast the love spell because they where worried about sally.Jillian lives like a more 'traditional' witch being wild and having many love Affairs. extrovert She is like their Ancestor but she has a lot less power. This is the source of their sibling rivalry.

This movie is for folks breaking generational curses. It is *definitely* 90’s as fuck, part of that is because the studio really wanted this to be a lighthearted, like Hocus Pocus-style IP. There was a different score originally and they brought in someone else at the last minute because the original music was “too serious.” But looking at the acting, the cinematography, the care with which the production was handled... I think there’s a studio-mandated tone issue here that affects the whole Jimmy storyline. It was actually a huge fuckin deal to be a witch in the 90’s. This movie came out right around the time I started practicing (shout out to Evan Rachel Wood in this movie, she’s 16 days older than me) and the general media environment was fascinated with the “earth-based religion” revival. In turn, you had the rise of christian religious extremists who were convinced that between us and The Gays (and those of us who were gay witches!!), the world was ending. To avoid getting hatred and boycotts on movies like this, studios would lean really hard into “whimsical” even when dealing with stories that were not... that. So we end up with a movie that is definitely by witches 4 witches in a social climate which was still very much dominated by christian extremism. I’ve noticed a disconnect with that context in a lot of commentaries about late 90’s/early 2000’s stuff, like not having demons in the Doom movie or the character “known as the Devil” on the Vampire Diaries. This was the age of Chick Tracts and pipe bombs in Planned Parenthoods. As a child I was told I was going to hell pretty frequently and one of my mom’s friends stopped speaking to her because mom let me practice. I grew up in a major city too, you wanna talk generational curses, let’s go with the legacy of the puritans on everyday life in the US. One of the things Practical Magic makes clear is that magic has always been a tool of the desperate. People with no social power can always turn to their ancestors, to the Earth, and others will seek out our help. Like, you can feel how you feel about religion and magic, but I can prove that my ancestors existed and that they wanted their line to thrive. Gilly and Sally are what happen when the social role we used to inhabit as spiritual guides is suppressed and reviled. You have power but you don’t have the teachings or self-preservation to make good choices with it. I think y’all might be able to intuit that is a very exploitable weakness for people like Jimmy Angelov. I think the best option to resolve the weirdness with Jimmy’s resurrection would have been to make it accidental. It’s not what happens in the book but suspension of disbelief can have different thresholds for books vs movies. We see the Owens’ use power instinctively a lot, if the sisters had been arguing about what to do and their desperation had built enough energy to spill out of them and reverse his death, that might have held up better over the intervening decades than trying to get us to buy that this was a stubbornly intentional choice. I dunno. The cop love interest hasn’t held up so well either but I don’t have any solutions for that one. There was actually really good witch logic otherwise, like using tequila as a taglock to call Jimmy to the surface consciousness in Gilly’s body and the spirit confronting his reflection in the five pointed star being a banishing influence. I loved how they talked about symbols and how modern society interacts with them. Tbh, the denial of magic in favor of the rational was the justification for centuries of atrocities by “enlightened” colonial powers. I love that this current wave of witchcraft revival includes a reclamation of heritage by BIPOC. We love movies like this because, barring some special effects, it feels familiar. How do you keep going under a feeling of pervasive doom? What does it actually take to break a cycle of violence or loss? How does it feel to love when you know your loved ones are at risk? All very pertinent questions.

So, unironically in the witch community that is a thing (no, I'm not talking about Harry Potter or Sabrina witches @ ignorant trolls). People kind of frown on those who have the intention of controlling a person's autonomy and that includes love potions. If you're going to do a love potion, it's OK if it's a self-love potion or the person has consented. And besides, doing a spell (whether or not you believe in it) on someone who doesn't like you that much in the first place just isn't going to end well.

Yes. No one (maybe not no one), but this is rarely talked about. It is in my list of underrated films. I love how charming it is. I like how the magic system is unique and something you can picture in the real world. I also love how this is a story of sisterhood and women especially in the end where it is women just supporting each other instead of bad mouthing each other. I also like how Sally’s daughters are a mix of both Sally and Ginny. I especially love how they want their mom to be happy. They aren’t like, “this man isn’t our dad. We need him out”. They see that is the guy of their mom’s wish and they want her to have that even if they disagree on some other aspects. I also like how they don’t make the men bad to lift the women up. There were good men and there was one bad one. Lastly, the score and soundtrack is top notch. And many add to the story and the characters which is a bonus. Sorry for the long post. I just don’t get the opportunity to talk about this movie.
