In the first part of our webinar miniseries on high precision metrology we give a brief introduction to the language of frequency metrology:
- Reviewing time and frequency domain quantities such as Allan deviation, phase noise and timing jitter
- Explaining the need for stable oscillators and the levels of performance for different applications
- Presenting the concept of the laser linewidth and the Pound-Drever-Hall laser stabilization
- Comparing the performance of high-end quartz, microwave, and optical oscillators, and reviewing the rules of their fair comparison
