Poz tongs - part two

As we continue our look at making a set of Poz tongs it is time to shape the jaw of the tongs. This style pf blacksmithing tongs is one of my favorite styles of tongs for forging smaller round or square stock.

    I just finished building my coal forge (from scratch) a week ago using DF in the shop as a guide. I'm now making 25 leaf key rings one after the other following Alex Steel advice.... then I'm going to make these tongs because I only have one set of heavy wolf jaw tongs....Then I'm gonna make a power hammer as per Roy's. Loving every minute of becoming a blacksmith although I have a looooong way to go!

    Instead of Aluminum spacers in the vise jaws, see if you can find some stainless angle of similar dimensions. The Aluminum is quickly drawing the heat out of the piece, stainless is a fairly terrible conductor and will cool the work more slowly.

  • @BlackBearForge

    @BlackBearForge

    5 жыл бұрын

    The aluminum is used because it provides a better grip so the work slips less.

  • @sladoeii

    @sladoeii

    Ah, so the softness of the material helps conform to the surface? The stainless could be roughed up significantly to improve the grip, though still not quite as soft as the Aluminum.

    John if you put that hardy down where it would sit on the anvil i.e the ledge it would not move in the vice.

  • @BlackBearForge

    @BlackBearForge

    5 жыл бұрын

    Except that due to my well worn hardy hole the hardy shank does not form a square shoulder and would hold even worse. plus to present the best camera angle the hardy turned in such a way that there is no shoulder to sit in the vise.

    Did you find using aluminum for your vice jaws drew the heat out too fast? I'd imagine aluminum would dissipate heat too well.

    You could, but it is the cooling from slack tub to vise that is the big problem not so much the cooling from the forks themselves.

    John, another great video, I just started on making a pair, and was wondering if it would cause a problem if you split the jaw before you bent them. If not you could use the type of vise insert that you use for doing animal heads to support the jaw while splitting . Also have you discovered Dave Engels's channel Engelscoachshop, if not you might enjoy it, being a woodworker and a blacksmith.

    Would using 3/8”thick stock be to much for these tongs?

  • @BlackBearForge

    @BlackBearForge

    5 жыл бұрын

    It all depends on the material you will be holding. For 1/4 - 3/8 I think 1/4" stock is plenty. But once you get over 1/2" the 3/8 material might be better.

  • @shadetreeforge

    What he uses is a device made for that I believe it's called a flame saver? it has a valve for oxy n acteylene that is connected to an arm it also has a built in pilot light, initialy you set the torch how you want it, light the pilot, when done hang torch on the arm, torch go's out, when ready, lift torch off the arm light it with pilot and you're good to go! Great for doing lots of repeated spot heating, like John was doing
