Great video.... Interestingly enough I've basically had similar findings over the past week or so of ordering both the puck and then mimo (then returning the puck). Obviously the mimo costs more but definitely has superior performance. Wish I had waited a few days to get your discount code :)

Wow poynting is great, I upgraded the antenna to poynting mimo 3 V2 15 antenna from the puck 2 antenna. So now I have a puck 2 and netgear 810S for sale lol

It probably most depends on where you are using it. If you are in a reasonable signal area it is probable your Router is the limiting factor, (assuming it is not a newish model Huawei) as it probably has a cat 4 modem in it where as newer ones will be Cat6+ However if you are more rural and it is the signal impacting the speed a better antenna would probably have more impact on the performance. Obviously the best solution is a high performance Antenna and a high performance router but that could be over kill. Probably depends where you spend most of your time urban or rural as to whether it is better to spend more on your router (Urban) or your antenna (rural) - I feel a topic for a future video coming on! The final thing to consider is your network provider - as some perform far better than others in different locations. If you are regularly in the same spot it is worth hunting down which network gives the best performance there. Personally I see the Netgear as more of a consumer model - which may suit some. I prefer the more industrialised professional model some of which are actually cheaper than the netgear. But I do know a lot of people love the netgear.

Great video yet again (thankyou) and thought provoking... If only one sim card is fitted in a RUTX12, can it still connect to two towers or do you need two sims?

Thanks! Glad it was useful. Each of the RUTX12 Cat 6 modems use a technology call Carrier Aggregation (CA), this means that if your network provider has two frequencies being broadcast in the same area (could be from the same tower or could be from a different towers) and supports CA it can connect to both of them and therefore utilise the connection bandwidth from both connections at the same time on the same modem. This will work with one SIM. However you do need 2 sims to be able to connect to 2 towers provided by different networks or benefit from up to 4 connections on the same network with CA, or 2 connections somewhere CA wasn't available. Hope that makes sense?

Hi Ian! It comes with a 30mm and 80mm so allowing for the nut I would say a max roof thickness of 70mm should be ok. I'm not sure the roof thickness on coach builds / A class, ours is 60mm with outer skin, insulation and inner cladding. However, if your is thicker than 70mm it does come with a 3M type adhesive sheet to surface mount without a spigot, which, given the surface area of the base I can see being very secure.

I never directly compared the XpolA001 with the MiMo3 as I was so disappoint with the Xpol I sent it back. My experience with the MiMO3 has been significantly better than the XPol (which is pretty old now) across the board. The MiMo3 is what I now use day to day. Hope that helps.

@@ExploreVanUK hi mate I’ve just had the mimo3 installed and I’m using a netgear nighthawk M1 router. I have plugged in the LTE wires to the router using an adaptor but the signal seems to read worse when I do a speed test any ideas what that could be. Cheers

Hi, I don’t know the kind of configuration the M1 has as I’ve avoided consumer models as I find the options sometimes lacking compared to industrial / commercial / professional models. It could be the case that with the better antenna the M1 is able to “see” more towers and frequencies than it could without the antenna and if it’s not intelligent enough to work out which cell tower / antenna has the best bandwidth it may have connected to a different tower that actual has a lower performance than the one it was connected to without the antenna. In our case If this happens we can lock our router to a certain band or cell ID if we find it has better bandwidth. I’m not sure if the M1 enables you to do similar? Does that make sense?

Could you please tell me if it’s possible to have internet in a static caravan with out a router, would the external antenna work as the site internet is very poor. Bought a BT plug in but doesn’t work Thanks

Hi, if you want to use the sites WiFi and boost it you could use a system like we have from Alfa see video below. But the thing to check is that it is the signal at the caravan that is weak rather than just the sites internet connection that is poor. If the sites internet connection is just not up to the amount of users there is no way you could boost that and a cellular router may be a better option. Great video, and a very useful breakdown of some otherwise complicated stats! Would've loved to have seen the cheaper router go up against the Teltonika to see how the two compared. Can I ask which router you'd recommend for the money? While I could splash out if need be, I'm thinking it may be worth going with a 'sensible' 4G setup alongside Starlink, as I'm intending to work from some of the most remote places in the UK. Hi and thanks, it's really difficult to do that comparison on straight speed / signal as it wouldn't really demonstrate the differences. Out of the box there are definitely areas where they would perform comparably but there are also areas where the Teletonika Routers would definitely out perform the cheaper router. It would depend what locations, what network you are on and how you have the Teltonika Router configured. As a rough analogy it would be like comparing a top of the range Range Rover to an old Toyota Hilux. Whilst in some situations they would perform just as well, the difference between the two makes them incomparable. Our day to day go to solution is a Teltonika RUT955 with a Poynting MiMo3 antenna. We don't need huge bandwidth / speeds and as we tend to be more out of town the ability to grab and hold a signal is more important, so whilst this is only a Cat 4 router it gives us the flexibility and configurability we need and the ability to easily switch between two networks. Its so robust we have no worries with it breaking or getting damages being shaken around in the van. On the rare occassions we are near to a city / Large town, we actually use the hotspot on the 5G phone we tested here kzread.info/dash/bejne/hI6HqsaDcsmXY5c.html. During our summer trip into Europe next year we plan to use Starlink, as now you can pause the RV service its more economically viable and means we don't have to worry about EU Roaming limits or hassle of finding local Sim cards etc. If I were working full time from the Van and needed to be confident of a speedy connection in pretty much any location it would be first on my list.

Would you say the RUTX12's price increase is justified over the 11 for everyday purposes? It almost seems like a bit of a luxury that I wouldn't necessarily NEED. It's so easy to keep wanting the best products with these things! Must.. Resist!

Thats a hard one the RUTX12's dual modems are definitely a big bonus, and for a higher speed data connection that was "Mission Critical" I would say well worth it. But you do need to consider what that means, to get the real benefit you would need to have 2 Active and reasonably high allowance Sim Cards / Data Plans (So likely 2 monthly charges) and you would need the more expensive 7in1 MiMo Antenna to give an LTE connection to both modems. So for general use I would probably opt for the RUTX11 unless you are planning to have 2 active data plans anyway. I hate to throw another into the mix but you may want to consider the RUTX14 with it's higher category modem, which might be a more suitable choice between the two and enable you to benefit from higher speed if you are in a suitable area just with one data plan (Though you would still need the 7in1 Antenna to get the full benefit as it has 4x4 Mimo connection)

Just to clarify - would I even need the 7in1 antenna to get the most of the X11/12? I must have missed that part in my research! I hoped 5in1 was enough 🤦🏻‍♂️

What is the deference in performance between those antennas and antennas included with rut955 or rutx11? Also what is the deference between those antennas and teltonica combo mimo? Pls help as my understanding is limited in that matter. Does dBi matters the most?

I didn't test against the "internal" antennas that come with the units as being inside the van they are effectively in a faraday cage so signal strength is severely impacted - I'll do a quick test later today to show by how much it impacts the signal strength. Signal strength is a good indicator of the performance of the Antenna, but you do need to bear in mind that there are other influences on the overall performance, eg the type of modem, the frequency band, the load on the tower and the load on the network. The Teltonika Combo was roughly comparable to the Puck in performance but I preferred the flexible options for mounting that you get from the Puck rather than the Combo that has the through the roof mounting.

@@ExploreVanUK when I was talking about included antennas I meant those 5 separate ones in clouded in the box, that magnetly attache to the roof, and what is the deference between them and paying extra for all in one antena like that from teltonika or puck. In the end I ordered rutx11 + teltonika all in one antenna, as my ZTE failed after a month and is frequently turning off after few minutes of use even attached to wall.

I'll see if I can find the small individual magmount ones that came with the RUT955 and see how they perform. Shame about your ZTE mine is still going strong - have you tried doing a factory reset on it?

If you position puck antenna on satelitte dish, would that improve signal?

It could act as a reflector but to be honest I don’t know if that will help or actually make it worse with reflected signals. The Puck is designed to be omnidirectional where as using the dish would be trying to make it directional. I suspect you would be better off buying a directional antenna if you want to maximise performance in one direction.

Took my Poynting MIMO to my Motorhome dealer as I didn’t want to risk my warranty fitting it myself as the Motorhome is only 3 month old. The dealer refused to fit it because of the flimsy plastic spigot and the poor sealing. The technician also stated that he didn’t feel it was a good idea drilling 6 holes in the roof. He also told me what I suspected that it would only be comparable with a campervan with a thin steel roof and not a Motorhome with a 70mm cavity. Be warned.

I’d find a new dealer personally. Did he try to sell you something else by any chance? If not happy with the spigot Mount then they can be surface mounted with the provided 3M adhesive pad. No need for any holes other than a cable entry gland. It depends the kind of places you travel to - if you go to out of the way places, want the best chance of getting a signal and don't mind paying the extra then the MiMo3 would definitely be my choice. If you travel closer to towns, it wouldn't be the end of the world if your connection was slower or not available, you don't really want to spend as much as the MiMo3 the Puck is still a good antenna. We tend to stay in more rural locations and having connectivity is pretty important to us, so the extra £80 is worth it. NB Solwise have extended the discount code to the end of September so make sure to get your 5% off whichever you go for!

I am afraid I haven't - At a brief glance it's a WiFi Antenna rather than a 4G antenna,. I have used an Alfa UBDO in the past which worked very well for connecting to more distant WiFi hotspots, but it is directional.

What I can't understand and I wanted to ask you who already know the teltonika rut955 router if it's possible to make this wireless antenna coexist with an Omni Directional 4G antenna such as the POY PUCK. The idea was this, I stop in a new area I scan with the wireless antenna to find free wifi and only in the absence of a free wifi network use the 4g network. Is it possible in your opinion? Thank you.

I can’t confirm but theoretically it could work connecting the 2 by LAN cable. But I couldn’t be sure as I presume the mikrotik needs some configuration to work as it has logic on it. It would be interesting to see how it performed in comparison to just connecting a high gain WiFi antenna direct to the RUT955. Let me know how it goes if you try it.

I’ve only ever seen the MiMo available in white I am afraid. But you could drop Poynting or Solwise a quick note to check. Alternatively you could potentially vinyl wrap a white one I doubt it would impact the performance.

From my experience it depend how much effort has been put into tuning the antenna elements to optimise them for the right bands / Frequencies. The more expensive ones also have higher quality cable and therefore less signal loss.
