If you want to build one now, getting the correct negative temperature coefficient resistors for the VCO and VCF would be a problem. I think all other components could be found easily. The VCF self-oscillation could blow your speakers, it was vicious. The pseudo-random counter of the noise generator was prone to locking up. The modulation of the triangle waveform shape was an unusual feature. Being DIY the build quality was variable but if the right components were used it was a neat monosynth.

I actually made my own PCB from the articles but had to make the PCB shorter (500mm) as my simple layout-program had that limit. All components in place but right now the tricky part is the kbd - I must have like to contacts per key - one for the voltage (not 1V/octave) and one for gate. A nice little synth. Hope I can finish this one and give it to a grandchild.

Oils and solvents used to clean potentiometers can wash away the special grease that makes them feel silky smooth. I have a tube of soap thickened grease (Rocol Kilopoise) that can be applied to the shafts which make them feel velvety smooth again but it does mean dismantling them…

10:22 Old pots were great, sometimes, when they were young. Old, heavily used pots stink. Old and new crappy pots stink, but there were a lot of high-quality pots available back when dinosaurs built synths. Actually, pots are not better than they once were - it is only in the last 10-12 years we started getting really good pots again, like one could get in the old days (I mean, for the right price, there were always good ones, but they became rare for a while).

  • @LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER

Indeed. But most of the old plastic pots on any sort of synth from the 60's and early 70's feel not great now. Much improved in the late 70's. But yeah even a restored arp 2600 for instance with original pots still just feels nasty. Small price to pay I guess!
