As far as the core lifts, weightlifting, without a doubt. Dynamic strength is far more important that locking in your whole body for a very isolated max bench press. But reaching one's full athletic potential still requires a great deal of accessory work, regardless if your base in power or weightlifting.

Everything is a tool you have to use accordingly. If u take an athlete and he has like 3 months before his fight/race or whatever ,you start with very basic staff . Regular squat, regular overhead press etc in rep range of 10ish and more so u can build capacity with load. Moving forward to 2 months before the "insert something of your choice" you get lower rep ranges (6-4) movement patterns closer to what the sport includes. Closer to the day, you start the ballistic/dynamic approach and get a specific movement movement pattern (Dont exclude the basic staff just do them more sport specific). Do you approve @Garage Strength?

High frequency in 3 or 6 main lifts? 😉 From a weightlifter point of view: I squat and „deadlift“ totally different than a power lifter. Both are only accessory’s and it s necessary to modify them, to work on weaknesses. A power lifter will work on the perfect competition form. If competition is not your goal, then go for weightlifting. You will have a ton of squats, pulls/deadlifts, presses and benching is less harmful than most people think. But power lifting is possible without a coach and programming is easy. w/o coaching weightlifting will be frustrating.

  • @TheGingervit1s

@@ytano5782 why is the implication that a powerlifter will work on perfect competition but a weightlifter won't? I don't understand lol, it would apply equally to both. When I say use both I don't mean with the same athlete; powerlifting movements and weightlifting movements both have their place and there's no reason not to use whatever makes your athletes better rather than rigidly sticking to just one style

  • @ytano5782

@@TheGingervit1s I have formulated this in a misleading way. Of course, weightlifters also work continuously on their competition form in snatch, clean and jerk. But not on squat, deadlift and bench. Sometime you will see a weightlifter on a power lifter competition. The squat is always too deep and the deadlift looks like a half clean

I mean for wrestling, shotput (HS) and Competitive cheer (currently a D1 male cheerleader) explosiveness is key for me. Push press, push jerk, hang clean, back squat, z press, bench, front squat, zercher squat, RDLs, box jumps, broad jumps, and sprints. Have been staples in my gym time. (Of course some accessory work too after compounds) but its mostly explosiveness speed lifts and excercises with some strength based compound lifts. Hang cleans perfectly resemble a toss for cheer, then push press for stunts that transition from hands. (Like hands to Lib or hands to cupie), Zerchers too.

Olympic weightlifting is so much better for athletes than powerlifting. Problem is, most athletes aren’t willing to take 3-6 months to learn how to weight lift. Also good luck finding a coach in the states, and if you do you’ll pay a pretty penny. Vs. the power lifts can be learned in a week or less.

Minor qualm with one of Phil's answers. He says that he doesn't want his athletes to "think about" things as they go through the movement, but I have seen videos of him doing some of the kettlebell routines that do require some additional thought to keep rhythm. They are great routines, don't get me wrong, but some do require the athlete to think perhaps even more than a typical olympic lift. His kettlebell routines are some of my favorites on his channel too, so please don't stop doing them Phil!

I think by thought he means technical ability, as oly lifts are a sport in and of itself- people spend decades perfecting their form on the c and j and snatch. oly lifts are at the top of the spectrum when it comes to barbell+resistance training for sure. The technique needed for oly lifts far surpass that of kettlebell movements 100%. Thats just how I interpreted it

In most athletic sport the hamstrings and glutes are much more important than the quads. And in a quadominant sport like Olympic weightlifting the athletes will not develop the needed muscles in the desired ratio. I understand the speed aspect though and that's why the % of the weight on the bar will have to be selected obviously for speed work.

I have not found much carry over with deadlift nor bench press or even heavy squats to any sport i have done seriously, American football, rugby, BJJ... while I hear what you said a lot I found that to be BS in my experience. For me the powerlifting lifts where good for getting size and about nothing else. Really wish I hadnt wasted all that time on it. If I knew what i know now I would have been a better athlete not just a bigger one. I think in general people seem to think that resistance training of any sort has way more carry over than it really does to a point they forget to practice the sport they are trying to get good at. The olympic lifts do seem to have a better carry over but unless your sport is olympic weightlifting it really shouldn't be your main focus but is a positive addition to any program. Having said that, the Olympic lifts are more fun and a really good measure of your mobility. If you cant do them, you have mobility work you need to do.
