Power Wagon Walkaround with Forge Overland

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Brought to you by Blue Ridge Overland Gear: www.blueridgeoverlandgear.com
We caught up with Will Marshal of Forge Overland at Overland Expo East 2018. Check out this walkaround of Will’s customized 2017 Ram Power Wagon.
Some of the stand-out features include a welded custom fairlead mount created by Ujoint Off Road. The wheels are 17" AEV Katla's wrapped in 37" Falken WildPeak AT3’s, one of the first production sets of these tires. White Knuckle Rock Sliders also protect the rockers for any rock crawling this truck may see. For camping, this truck also has a Leitner Rack, with a Go Fast Campers Roof Top Tent on top, which was later changed to a full Go Fast Camper Shell.

Nice job. I was planning to go the Power Wagon route for an overland rig. I like the " keep it simple" approach.

Awesome Power Wagon! Clean and simple is always best. I love my '07, like you said, they're really impressive in stock or close to stock form.

Stock is good, especially when it does what you need it to do. Parts are much easier to get, when they are in the OEM inventory.

Older post, I know. But, I appreciate the shout outs to GFC and Hondo, both owned by a friend of a friend. Great guy! I have the Hondo phone mount on my bike, and that phone is going NOWHERE until you want it to.

I thought the bumper was PW compatible. When you're on the Thuren site navigating for PW, the bumper comes up.

Love the Kentucky tag! My home state. Have you had any issues with the 1500 lb payload limit? I had taken the PW off my list because I wanted to get a bed vault, bed glider and steel topper with a rack and pull and overland camper. The weight of those of those items alone and the tung weight of the camper are just shy of the 1,500 max. That leaves no room for gear.

I’m thinking about AEV Katla wheels in 17x10 for 35” tires. I know they make 8.5” wide but I like more negative offset. Any issues with drivability in the 10”? Scrub radius issues, etc?

Newbie question: Why go with the truck bed racks to mount the storage boxes and the tent when you could get a truck bed topper and have lots of storage room inside that is protected from the weather/dust/mud and is potentially more secure? You could still mount your tent to the top of the topper.

I have the same basic setup on my Ram (Leitner rack /Yakima rooftop tent). The tent has quick releases so it comes of fast and the Leitner design makes so I can slide the mounting braces all the way up towards the cab, meaning you can still use your truck bed for tall stuff (dirt bike, move furniture, etc). All the other racks out there you lose the use of your bed for tall cargo.

FGOverland I put mine on the inside of my cab as well. I did it for climate control reasons. In the summer it helps with keeping the things colder longer, especially when you use reflective sun blocking shades. Which also helps prolong the life of the unit and your rigs battery/charging system. In the winter it helps prevent the unwanted freezing of your food by the means of your rigs climate controls. I just block off the heater vent underneath the seat in the winter to keep the unit from getting excessive heat blown onto it.

Nice truck. I am trying to decide between a wrangler JLU Rubicon, gladiator Rubicon or a power wagon. Hands down being a past 2500 HD owner, I like the power wagon but got to come to terms with the 7-10k price over the jeeps. I am also looking for something I can rocklander with. What are your thoughts? I will most likely order something when the time comes.

  • @TaftCastle

    @TaftCastle

I’m in the same boat. Ram has a plush ride, storage and power but horrible gas mileage. The Rubicon has better gas mileage, endless options, but a weaker engine and limited storage space. Decisions, decisions.

From my experience in the state of utah. I have seen 2017 or newer powerwagons going for around 40-45k which isn't a real difference then any rubicon and actually seems to be in line or cheaper than the gladiators. Besides the bonus capabilities of a full size truck

The Dodge/RAM Power Wagon, along with the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and now the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon are THE most off-road capable vehicles you can buy straight from a dealership(..bite me...). The best explanation I've ever heard for comparing the Power Wagon to the Jeep is that the Power Wagon is like a Yak: a hardy, sure-footed beast that is capable of traversing rough terrain while carrying a heavy load; on the other hand, the Jeep Is more like a mountain goat, that like a yak, is hardy and sure-footed, but quite a bit more nimble, though at the expense of "payload". The Gladiator Rubicon would probably "bridge the gap" between the two. While not capable of towing and/or hauling quite as much as the Power Wagon, it would be a bit more nimble. Another thing to keep in mid is that the price of the Power Wagon includes a 12K,000lb. WARN winch now with synthetic winch rope, which costs quite a bit by itself.

Probably, they come with 4.10s which isn’t ideal for 37 inch tires, but with the torque the engine makes it’s doable.
