Freddie saw an opera with montsy and thought she had the greatest voice he had ever heard. not long after that he was in Spain which was where she was from and when an interviewer asked who was his favorite singer he said she was his favorite singer words went around and they agreed meet. Freddy was very nervous and said that he would be very happy if she only wanted to be friends with him but to work with her was like a dream come true. he wrote this song for her and she then asked him to write a whole album for them. she said when she met him she was totally captivated by him and that he had conquered her she felt a sense of freedom. this song was chosen for the Barcelona Olympics but sadly she was not able to perform it since he passed in 91. they became really good friends. there is a video in which montsy says that Freddy confided to her that he would not be around to sing it at the Olympics. she was one of the few people that Freddy confided to her that he would not be around to sing it at the Olympics.

Montserrat Caballé was a famous opera singer, born in Barcelona, Spain. Freddy, as a good opera lover, always felt admiration for her, and they managed to sing together. The song is about the first time they met and was chosen as the song for the Barcelona 92 Olympic Games, but unfortunately it couldn't be sung by Freddie.

Montserrat Caballé was one of the greatest opera divas in the last century, she was famous for her soft and long high notes. This was the first crossover between a rock singer and an opera diva, they were the perfect pair to break the good old conventions and the chemistry between them was insane. Pls, check out The Golden Boy at La Nit 88, that is even more dramatic, but seasoned with a surprise.

Some nights I just hunt for reactions to Freddie and Montsy duets. They are both so dramatic and expressive when they perform and their voices somehow harmonise perfectly. They made a whole album together and you can see when they sing together that they adore and respect one another. The Golden Boy and How Can I Go On are two more duets by these two that are well worth checking out!

This beautiful song was used in the opening of the Barcelona Olympics. Barcelona is Montserrat's home town Freddie considered this performance and album he, Mike Moran and Tim Rice wrote for these duets to be the highlight of his career. Please listen to some of the other songs from this album, and you will see why his acknowledged talent not only as a vocalist and musician, but as a composer as well, are still revered by the world

For Your Information... The late legendary, Barcelona born Montserrat Caballe(pronounced Caball-Yay), is still considered by many to be one of the greatest operatic soprano's of all time. Her Italian fans nicknamed her "La Superba".. Freddie Mercury first heard her in 1983 I believe, when he went to Covent Garden Opera House in London, to hear Luciano Pavarotti. Montserrat was the lead female in the opera and when Freddie heard her opening aria, he was totally smitten. Over the ensuing years they developed a deep and lasting friendship, a cerebral love affair, based on their shared devotion to music. Freddie had long had an interest in opera, Bohemian Rhapsody is clear evidence of this. For her part Montserrat was one of the very few classically trained performers to be open-minded enough, to even acknowledge, let alone have an interest in other musical genre's. Legend has it that Freddie wrote "BARCELONA!" as an homage and tribute to Montserrat, being born and living in the city. Many initially criticised her for her "betrayal" of her operatic roots, but she was to prove them absolutely wrong, with the very first real collaboration between opera and rock music. I understand that it was first performed at "The Ku Club, in IBIZA, in 1987, to rapturous acclaim. In 1988 the "anthem" became the central element of the city of Barcelona's successful bid to host the 1992 Summer Olympics. It was originally hoped that the two musical giants would perform it at the games opening ceremony, but sadly the fates intervened. For many the opening ceremony of the games in Barcelona was the best ever..Montserrat Caballe never sang the song again, preferring to keep it as a lasting tribute to her cherished friend and collaborator. She died in 2018.

What was wonderful, was Freddie didn't see any boundaries, for music, and felt Rock and Opera could work together. At that time, anyone else suggesting this collaboration would have been laughed at. Freddie introduced young people to Opera, and he and Montserrat made it work beautifully. They had huge affection for each other off stage. And she remained one of his close circle to the end.

A musical love affair between Freddie & Montsy … Watching these two perform is a sneak peek into Heaven 🌙🌟⭐️💫✨☀️ Freddie wrote the music for the Barcelona album & elicited the lyrical help of Sir Tim Rice for The Golden Boy (My Fav) and The Fallen Priest. It’s a shame we lost Freddie in 1991 and Montserrat in 2018. 🌿🌷🌿🌷🌿 Thank you for your reaction!

Correct, Monserrat Caballe was a very powerful Opera singer. Freddie was always a keen fan of Opera music. The song you are listening to was written by Freddie Mercury after he was approached by IOC to write a song for the 1992 Olympic Games in the Spanish city.

Monserrat Caballe had a HUGE voice! Most professional Opera leads do. I was in my first professional Opera when I was twelve. I was sitting on the back wall of the rehearsal hall (the ballroom of the Leland House Hotel) and the conductor, the late Mark Flint, I believe, told the Soloists to sing full-voice. They normally did not do that in rehearsals, They would sing an an octave lower (or higher) and sing at half-voice, to protect their vocal cords/voices. The POWER they had was astounding! I am an afficianado of Opera, but not a die-hard. But their voices were incredible, as was Freddy Mercury's.

Yes, yes, yessssss!! I'm not completely sure it was a demo, though. I thought it had to do with being a song he needed as a b side for 'The Great Pretender' and he recorded it for that. After he played it for her she wanted to write lyrics for it and it became Ensueno. I will have to look into the history of it. ANYWAY, after 'Exercises in Free Love' definitely listen to 'Ensueno'. You will not be disappointed.

Freddie always had a deep love and respect for opera and opera singers, non more than Montserrat, who is considered to be one of the greatest sopranos (with the most distinct voices) to ever live. They met and they became friends. That led to this song & several different collaborations. "Barcelona" is essentially a platonic love song between two friends, marvelling at each others talents. They did really love each deeply & Montserrat was devastated when Freddie died.

If you want a Queen song you may not have heard, try 'Let Me in Your Heart Again'. It was a song they had worked on for The Works album in 1983 but scrapped it because Brian said the band had found it impossible to complete the track, despite several versions of the lyrics being written to make it easier for Freddie to sing. (I personally wasn't there, but I think Freddie did JUST FlNE lol) Brian wove together parts from each of the existing Queen versions then worked with Roger on the music. They released it in 2014 in a video with some unseen footage from The Works tour and promo video clips from various videos they did. It is AMAZING. Also. 'The Golden Boy' from this album is the greatest. Please react 😁
