In the final days of the SEGA Saturn, SEGA was getting ready to release their final ever console... THE DREAMCAST! and we all know how that ended up.
However, it's easy to forget just how great the DREAMCAST's launch was. A truly monumental moment in gaming history helped in part by the legendary short-lived game series POWER STONE!
In this video, I take you back to that time to try and work out why CAPCOM seems to have completely forgotten about this beloved franchise.

Same - I was 13, preordered a Dreamcast, saved any money I got for about half a year, got my dad to take me to the local game shop for the midnight launch... and they hadn't had their shipment of Sonic Adventure yet - the one launch game I was really looking forward to! I remember wanting a Dreamcast specifically because of Power Stone. It seemed so cool and such a great compliment to the frantic gameplay of Smash Bros on the N64! But I never did buy a DC as at that time I had a TON of life firsts that ate up all my spare money until after the console had been discontinued. Little things like getting married, buying my first house, buying my first & only brand new car (after driving various beaters for several years,) and having my first child all happened in between the time the DC was first released and when it was discontinued.

Dreamcast to this day is the only console I ever bought on Launch day 9/9/99. My first games were Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur and House of the Dead 2. I later bought Tony Hawk 1, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Worms: Armageddon, Chu Chu Rocket, Space Channel 5, Virtua Tennis and Seaman. I also had the "Gleem" Disc that let you play PS1 game Gran Turismo disc with hi-def graphics. That was the sickest collection of games I'd ever bought for one console. I did get a couple duds one was Dreamcasts first RPG "Evolution" which was trash. Also another Survival horror game called Blue Stinger which was garbage. I'm sure I'm missing about 5 or 6 more games I just forgot over the years but Dreamcast lineup was spectacular. PS2 bullshit hype killed Sega and it's tragic for gamers.

Power Stone 1 is basically SF2 in 3D with it's own 8 world warriors. Since SF4, I really wanted a sequel or a remaster, its one of the best Dreamcast games to me. Since Capcom has ported near every arcade game or playable, I'm holding out hope for a 3D arcade collection or whatever because this, Rival Schools and Star Gladiator are still missing and never been ported for a long time. If they were generous on porting near every Darkstalkers game why not those?

Looking at the comments, I’m seeing a lot of people proclaiming how the second game is better than the first as if it’s some kind of hot take. It isn’t. Most people feel this way and although I don’t agree with this assessment, it’s completely understandable. PS2 Added a lot of cool features such as the set piece filled stages, hundreds of new weapons and items, new characters, and most importantly, four player mayhem! Make no mistake Power Stone 2 is one of the greatest games of its kind. All that said, I still prefer the first game over the second for one simple reason: it just plays better. I feel that the moment to moment gameplay in the first game is faster, more complex, and more satisfying than the second game. In the second game, everyone runs much slower and the moveset of every character has been stripped down to the bare essentials. In PS1 characters could combine their punches and kicks into a variety of combos, as well as perform unique throw animations both on the ground and in the air. Each character also had access to an overpowered dive kick maneuver. In PS2 all of these techniques were removed except for the throws, which can now only be performed with a partner helping you. The more homogeneous characters and stripped down movesets made PS2 feel more like a party game than a fighting game. I can understand why they may have felt they needed to slow the game down to make way for the bigger stages and 4 player action. But I don’t get why they removed the character specific moves. If PS2 played just like PS1, but with all the new items, characters, stages, plus the 4 players, (and maybe a nerfed dive kick)I think it would’ve been the perfect game. As it is, PS1 edges it out by virtue of the gameplay alone. But that’s just my personal preference. I totally get why people love the second game more, but I will always be a champion for the first. To this day, no other game makes me feel like it does.

I really hope for another Power Stone game (especially a possible remake), but we'll never know for sure. This series and Smash Bros are my favorite platform fighters in the late-90s. Rouge was scrapped as playable character in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom & Marvel vs. Capcom 3 respectively. Three characters had cameos in different games like Falcon & Rouge in desert and London stages of CvS2, Rouge & Ayame in Felicia's ending of CFE/J and Rouge alone in Felicia's ending of MvC3. And Ed. Falcon had two guest costumes in Dead Rising 3 or 4 and SFV respectively. Then again, Power Stone still needs to return after many years ago especially some of my characters/mains like Ed. Falcon, Rouge, Accel and (my girl) Ayame that I wanted to see again. Great video btw.

Its still a Travesty that Ed Falcon wasn't included in MvC Infinite. Ed Falcon using a Power Stone (one of the Infinity stones) just writes itself. Siiiiigghhhhh smh

I got a Dreamcast for Christmas in 2002 when the used PlayStation 2 I got originally refused to work. I had a friend who knew how to play burnt/bootleg games for the Dreamcast. I played powerstone and marvel v. Capcom 2 for the first time. I only feel slightly guilty.

The game that made me buy a dreamcast. Still play it with friends. It really needs a switch release. I’d pay $200 to own a physical switch copy.

8:44 ...Wait WHAT?! Japan always gets the cool stuff. Shame it was underulitized though. From what I read it was a key feature of the Virtual On arcade game where you could use a Dreamcast disk to customize a robot, not Dynamite Baseball though?

16:18 Ah yes, who could forget the Ancient Egyptian Egg Walker (Tails' final boss in Sonic Adventure, not the smaller one in SA2) in the game where you collect chaos emeralds? I jest but come on!

I wasn’t (and still not) interested in fighter games, but Powerstone 1 & 2 were my go to game for Dreamcast. Especially Powerstone 2 which really ramped things up. Kind of wish there was a Powerstone 3. I can only imagine how awesome that would look. …..or bad considering the current state of games are 😒

Since we're talking arena fighters, i feel i need to mention Mighty Fight Federation, its a solid indie arena fighter that has been getting updates and characters brought in since release, including guest appearences from Yooka and Laylee as well as Kunio and Riki from River City Ransom. I havent played it in a while but i hope the online community is still alive

I Love Power Stone! My Dreamcast was exhausted with Power Stone and Project Justice but sadly Capcom is on the Monster Hunter and Resident Evil business. Look at Mega Man dead again even if Mega Man 11 became the highest selling Mega Man game ever.

This couldve been a great rival to super smash brothers. Fighter megamix, capcom vs marvel/marvel super heroes and king of fighters paved the way for super smash brothers, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and powerstone.

Didn't hear my name on this one, guess it released after I had to reduce my monthly support due to being laid off. Either way, I'm glad for the time I was able to support at more than I can currently, but will continue to share your content to everyone I know that is into this.

Depends on what you think you're going to enjoy more. The original is a more tightly designed package that has more fleshed out mechanics, whereas the sequel went all in on spectacle and added lots of unlockable items but the actual hand to hand stuff is much less developed (for example, there are no unique throws in PS2 and you can only pick up the opponent and throw them. The special attacks in the powered up form are also more of a mixed bag because a lot of the flair that they had in the original is gone and some of the returning characters' super moves are much less fun to use as a result. The new characters are built for the new style of gameplay and it really shows in how much more creative their powered up move sets and appearances are, relative to the returning cast) To be clear: PS2 is the game I ended up playing more of because the item unlocks and general craziness were really compelling, but I do kind of wish that it played more like PS1
