The high pressure hose leading from pump to the steering Rack came away from its bracket and constant rubbing against chassis caused a leak in the steel pipe section of the hose. Manufacturer wanted $1,100 for a new hose, wrecking yard wanted $660 for used part untested with no warranty, could have purchased online form UK for 200 british pounds plus $350 shipping and to cap it off the mechanic quoted $650 labour to remove and install. I removed the high pressure hose, went to my nearest specialist industrial hydraulic services firm, they repaired it and tested it for $165 including four "O" ring seals. Make and model of my car - 2001 Mercedes ML320 W163. M112 Engine. It pays to do it yourself

Fudge, I thought my RHD specific hose for my E39 was expensive, but that is nuts. I am going to look into this sort of fix.

Thanks for the reply. I did some research and you're absolutely right it is way too high. The low side might be 200 psi but the high side is anywhere from 1200 to 1600 psi. It is truly a hydraulic hose. Luckily my repair was on the metal, so I was able to put a compression fitting in to fix it. Works like a champ. Again thanks for the response.

Replacing the rubber hose on The return line is a way better idea than buying the whole thing new. Have you ever replace the rubber on the high-pressure side? I wonder if The high-pressure ear clamps or high-pressure gas line clamps would handle the pressure on the high-pressure side. Thanks again for posting the repair.

Don't do it on the high pressure side. It will not work. This is only for the low pressure side. The high side will blow up the hose. Don't do jt

By chance do you know the exact size of the hose we need? Id like to buy it before taking it apart. Also how did you avoid air getting in when disconnecting the return line?

Jay J I forget. You'll need to take the hose to the auto part store to match. Regarding air, it is self purging.

My high pressure side is leaking but I was able to get an almost new salvaged line that was smashed on an area beyond the hose section i need. Can I somehow snip the new hose at each end of the rubber and swap it with my bad section? I wish i could have gotten an entire working salvaged unit but for free 99 and it being pristine in the section I actually need I thought there has to be a way to make it work. If not Im not out any $ but Im new to diy repair and unfamiliar with hose connectors or ways to guarantee a secure fit that wont just end up leaking, defeating the whole purpose.

Can the line get stuck in a sitting around not running car. I bought a rolling shell and fluid leaking from the pump and make notice when turning. I'm worried that the lines are clogged

I got a low pressure line coming from my reservoir. It's the metal line that is leaking. Odds I can cut the bad part of the metal line, get a longer piece of hose and clamp it at both ends?

Make sure it is the low pressure hose, not the high pressure. This WILL NOT WORK ON HIGH PRESSURE HOSE.

If you have enough length to cut it true with a tubing cutter and install a union and matching fittings .You will need to double flare the ends of the tube as you would do the same as brake tubing repair .Never use compression fittings on hydraulic lines.mAY WORK FOR A FEW BUT WILL NOT HOLD! This is the wrong way to do it easier but wrong.Buy a flaring tool kit .It will pay itself off with quality repair not a compression fitting lazy unsafe repair.Only a hack does this and should not be wrenching. He knows better or should!
