Power Outlet Not Working - Easy Fix

If a power outlet or light switch in your house randomly stopped working, there are a few things you can check before calling out an electrician to see why your power stopped working. I go over how to check and reset a circuit breaker, how to check and reset a GFCI outlet, and to look for visible defects on bad outlets. Luckily for most people this turns out to be an easy fix.

Thanks a lot. You saved me from a lot of unnecessary costs associated with calling an electrician. In my case, it was a GFCI that tripped but it was no way near the receptacle that suddenly stopped working. The GFCI that tripped was about 150 feet away in the garage while the bad receptacle was in the patio. Thanks again for this very helpful video.

this video assumes everyone has this electrical setup... wtf u have sao many breaker switches? in my apartment building i have to literally go burden my downstair neighbours hallway, to flip switches if electricity goes out and only have like 2 switches... (i guess u live in some massive sized house... ) my socket is literally circuted or whatever the term is.. if u plug something in sparkles, like something about to explode lol... and the upper light switch knob literally doesnt work, like a spring is dead or smt, is it possible that its switched on but connectivity is poor, thats why it's "short-circuting" , not sure if i should even touch it... my mother is always pissed that she cant help from me when things like these happen and has to call over someone... the thing is, i dont want to touch electrical things... when i was 3 i plugged wires in the socket and got electrocuted, my fingertips were literally black... i think i stil lhave subconcious trauma about electrical things and fire... (also almost burn down the house when i was 10 playing with matches...) how should i check if the wires are correctly connected ... wich side is negative and wich one is positive , the wires dont even have fcking colors... . the system is from like fcking soviet block building system.. built in 1991~ or smt... 1:59 dont even have outlets like this... not sure what country video this is... systems are clearly different... fingers crossed.. i wont electrocute myself : ))))))

Thanks for the tips about outlets not working. Your tip about checking the GFCI outlet not in pxomity to the outlet that failed to provide service was the answer. The GFCI involved was all the way across the kitchen from the non-working socket. I reset the GFCI and, presto, it restored power the outlet that was not working. I bet you saved a couple of hundred dollars because my electrician charges $90 just to knock on the door. Thanks again!

I have to thank you both! I read comments while I'm watching/listening videos. That's how I have realized "It's me! I'm the problem! It's me!" I have 1 GFCI outlet at the front of the house, and 2 non-GFCI outlets at the back. The outlets from the backyard stopped working a while ago. The one from the front works fine but I prefer to keep it OFF to trick people (children) as they do not know there's a reset button that can turn the outlet ON. But I did not realize that I'm turning the other 2 outlets OFF. I thought that probably they have an internal fuse. I mean how come these outlets are rated 15A, 20A without a precise fuse? I was looking for a video about their replacement when I found this one.

An excellent video.Jay. I want to point out one slight difference between the new Smart GFCI to the old version. The newer GFCI outlets work the same you press the test button and they trip out cutting off the AC power. When you reset the new smart series you must hold down the reset button for several seconds up to 5 or 10 seconds before they will reset the power. The normal way they snap on instantly if the outlet is good and if defective they will not reset. The new Smart GFCI will self-check itself before resetting. If you push and release the test button the reset will fail. If a person not knowing this it will lead them to think the GFCI is defective when it's actually good. My advice when buying new parts read over the instructions for anything new and be safe replacing the device. I know it's shocking news, Mr. Watson. Lol your joke was way to funny🤣

I wish i could give this a thousand likes 😅 Three outlets in my kitchen have been out for two weeks. Went to my breaker box and checked for tripped switches, and pushed the reset buttons on two outlets, nada. Only today, after seeing this video, did I try the reset on one additional outlet...SUCCESS 🎉 Thank you so much! 🙏🏽

If it goes out again i suggest to track down why it is tripping. You may need a new GFCI. If you replace be sure to tape the screws. It could avoid a short I had one recently that went bad and was showing up as Open. It needed replacement.

This video tipped me off that maybe that scary noise the breaker switch made earlier was a huge sign of something. Right on.

We have one outlet out that was not remedied by checking the breaker or the other thing. Unfortunately, the way the house is wired, we have no idea which breaker to turn off to replace the outlet. I guess we could turn off everything, but I hate to disconnect the fridge and freezer. There is only one GFCI in the entire house. We have been here 30 years, so I am sure of at least that much. Thank you for the video
