Besides acting as a firing brace for Captain Ashiro, I suspect she also keeps the tiger as a Kaiju detector. When the team's going over post-op cleanup plans, the tiger (I've been calling 'em Byakko, for want of a canon name) is the first one to sense the Yoju swarm overhead, and we also see a similar reaction to Kafka when he passed too close at one point -- for some reason, it seems like certain animals are sensitive to the presence of Kaiju, making them a useful early-warning tool.

More stories will unfold...if they are going for a 24 episode, we might see more action... but if its only a 12-13 episode i think i know where they will stop...
