Power divider ~ Rear Axle Damaged ~ Freightliner Century

All of a sudden it felt like the rear had a play and a shake
I stopped by at TA for a checkup and a grease
He checked all the oil, he called me over and said look at the nut with a magnet on the tip
Do you see this metal on it?
I looked at it right there and then I knew the rear is going bad
Got back to the shop and I had them open it up and there gears are damaged

The problem is Rockwell broke off to Meritor who continued shutting their union shops down across the USA and now not only have the stockholders realized how good we were, it’s biting them in the ass with substandard quality. In Newark, Ohio we were at the forefront of research and development and continuously had people working to keep the wrinkles ironed out. Now it’s done by low wage employees who don’t get paid enough to care.

Shame on capitalism. It's capitalism with a capital C that's ruining this country/world. Greedy ass investors and cut throat shareholders want us working class to have NOTHING. I have no problem with paying for quality done by skilled labor. My problem is paying for shit so the wealthy can blame working class people for demanding better wages. This country is infected with filthy leeches.

A fully reconditioned rear end that was overhauled and, most importantly, had the pre- load, mesh and contact patch set up to factory spec. With the best will in the world this is a job best left to an expert on the job.

Do not blame the oil change the damage was already done, normally the first thing to go if the wrong oil is used is the crown wheel and pinion. The power dividers suffer greatly due to excessive spin out when the drivers are to slack to use the diff lock in slippery conditions.

if the guys at the TA found a big piece of metal in your oil chances are it's already to late so it's not the guy at the TA'S fault it was probably only a matter of time and changing the oil had nothing to do with that

Hey it hurts, and there goes the profit for the next couple of months. My engine dropped a valve one month after I finished paying for the truck. $22,000 later, I was back on the road. Still paying. That's over now, but it was pain at the time. Not even mentioning, every year a new set of tires. Stay safe out there.

That engine had over a million, so I guess I got my money's worth. It's all good for now. We will see, I guess. The worst thing was it was a valve keeper that did it. It was funny, as the shop asked if I wanted the new improved valve keeper. Well duh. Especially since it only cost another hundred bucks. A buddy of mine was going thru Boise ID and the input shaft sheared off of his transmission. All he could do was coast to a stop. $4200 later, he was on the road a week later.

What kind of tires are you buying that you can only get a year out of them, Ive never heard of that...maybe you should stop taking heavy load for 20 cents more and drive lighter loads, 3 years later im still on MIchelin recaps and can still get at least 6 months

The driver should pay even more attention while driving. Because this damage of the lock gearbox makes a notable noise due to wear and then when it is critical and close to break down you can feel the vibration. Something is going wrong and you should stop and check, as it happens. Fortunately, the lock gearbox is damaged, but complete, because is something gets broken, any fragment could fall and also the crown and pinion get damaged, then the complete carrier is a garbage piece.

This is where the mechanics get you, when some one is in this situation , mechanics do not want to fix it part by part or sell you by parts instead they want you buy the whole power divider and be done with it. price is $4500.00 out the dealer, in this case it was $2500.00 picked up local shop, under warranty

  • @johnbeckman8916

The way they suggested may be the best in the end. Those other parts were compromised by the same oil and metal shavings. I assume "$2500.00 picked up local shop, under warranty" means "used parts"? Sorry to hear about your misfortune but it was good of you to share the experience to help others like me. Thank You and I hope that your rig keeps rolling!

These MBA (Mercedes) axles are the worst axles in the world. I have these axles/diffs on my truck, my forward diff just went again, this is the 4th time rebuilding it in 2.5 years. I'm not even going to rebuild these axles this time, overly priced piece of german junk. I'm probably going to be getting Meritor or Spicer, just swap both axles out completely. I'm tired of this junk, plus these MBA diffs cost a lot whether you get them rebuild completely or buy parts separately to rebuild them yourself.
