Powder Sunscreens and SPF Reapplication Tips from a Dermatologist | Dr. Sam Ellis

It's important to wear sunscreen every single day to protect your skin from sun damage. It's also important to reapply your sunscreen every two hours, but that can get a little tricky if you wear makeup. That's where powder sunscreens come in. They're an easy way to apply sunscreen over makeup or when you're on the go, BUT do they actually give you enough sun protection? Watch this video to find out!

I always used daily sunscreen but since I learned about powder sunscreen that’s when I actually started to reapply my sunscreen and I see such a difference. I always hated applying cream on top of my skin after I was out and about because I always felt that just made me oily, powder sunscreen came to the rescue. I use one from tarte, it has a button on the bottom so you can control how much powder is realized which I truly appreciate. It always goes around with me and even hubby learned to use it, he is always asking for it as well.

I was always afraid of powder sunscreens because my skin is super dry and the last thing I need is to add more powder after the light dusting I put on in the morning after my make up. But my botox lady put some of the Colorescience powder one on me and it's SO LIGHT I barely feel it, not drying at all. So I bought it, and now I'm obsessed :) Afraid of trying anything else for fear of it being subpar but it's so stinking expensive.... now I want to try the concealer too ;p

Hi I have very dry skin and found the powders didn't suit me tbh. For reapplication over makeup I use a spray sunscreen and either liquid or cream otherwise. I think the powder spf's may suit an oilier skin more, as it can replace the face powder they apply through the day to mattify anyway (plus giving some additional spf obviously). For another lightweight way to top up over makeup i sometimes use a Korean cushion compact - an empty cusion with some of my regular spf inside. Patting it gently over the makeup can provide some top up, but isn't suitable for a real reapplication when outside for any length of time. I'm an incidental sun exposure type of person - fitzpatrick one, hides in the shade, sits under an umbrella, wears a hat and in and out of shops or cafes etc. I'm never at the beach or pool and instead spend my Scottish Summer riding around on a motorbike, or drinking coffee in the shade. Best wishes.

Can you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do a video on how long mineral sunscreen is effective on the face? This whole "apply every 2 hours" even when working at a desk (not next to a window) situation seems so extreme. Is there a way to INVESTIGATE how effective a sunscreen still is after 8 hours of normal (non-active) wear? Thank you so much!

When indoors you don't need to re apply every two hours, it is recommended to do every 4-5 hours, and if there's no windows in your office I would say there's no need to do so, unless when you go home the sun is still out

I recently read a study done on the degradation of sunscreen in non direct UV light. I can not remember the exact percentage, but it found that after 7-8 hours, only 25% (or around there) of the sunscreen was degraded. This means that around 75% of the sunscreen was still present. After reading this research along with other published studies, I have come to the conclusion that reapplication is pointless unless you're truly in direct UV rays for a cumulative 2 hours or more.

I am a 50 year old and I'm told not to wear powder anymore. Doctors and professional practitioners tell me to just use concealers and creams. So should I just buy concealers, creams/foundations that have spf in them? I'm afraid if I do, my makeup will look more cakey as the day wears on. Do you, by chance know of a good spf foundation that would help? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.🙂

Brush on block is cheaper than other spf brushes simply because they have refills which cost less than other refillable brushes/containers and is cheaper than having to repurchase a new brush every time. That's why I recommend them and they are vegan if you care about that.

I like your video on powdered sunscreens. Especially the timing of the application in zones. However, I don’t like how they seem to geared towards women as makeup. I would love it if they were advertised for men, too. Most men aren’t accustomed to applying things to their faces after their usual morning ritual of shaving. Since skin cancer really isn’t a respecter of persons nor genders, we’ve got to get the menfolk on board with sunscreen coverage that works well for all skin types, too.

I've tried the one from Ilia - it's great because you can refill with their loose SPF powder as the bottom container is removable. The brush is also removable and easier to clean that way. Have you tried the Suntegrity Pressed Mineral Powder SPF 50? It's not a brush system, but a compact.

But how do you put the sunscreen on over makeup? I would think it would move the make up around your face unless there is a way to do it to add more and not have this happen. Do you have any advice for this? Btw, I'm 50 now. So I've been recommended to not use powder anymore because it can show off wrinkles more. Is there a foundation out there that would apply more naturally so that it doesn't cake up or look odd when you put more sunscreen on? I just don't want it looking like I am overdoing it.😳

Could you please do a video on sunscreen layering as well🙈 (with that I mean putting different sunscreens on top of each other when reapplying your SPF for example or you wanna apply a tinted mineral sunscreen on top of your chemical SPF when wanting to use the tinted one as make-up) It’s so confusing because there’s info out there about different filters hindering each other from working when applied on top of each other. Meaning if I apply different layers my SPF protection is getting less effective. Is that true? Should I always reapply the same sunscreen? And can I still use my tinted mineral SPF as make up on top of my chemical sunscreen layer? Sorry for the long elaboration🙈 Just really curious to know how it works... Thanks☺️

With nothing on my skin, my skin starts to burn literally within minutes in the hot summer in full sun (I have hyper reactive skin) and it has never failed me. I can go all day with one application. No redness whatsoever. Not even a little. Even when I swim (and I dunk under). Can't wear liquids or creams. They irritate my skin and are a no go. And they break me out horribly. Never found one that works for me. So it is powders for me. Honestly that applicator looks terrible cuz you can't really tell how much is coming out. I use a regular fairly dense brush so I know I am getting good coverage. I love the Bobbi Brown full coverage foundation brush. Or my refr #24 brush. Lays it on really well. 🙂

Agree it’s not the most practical (and why it’s not my personal go-to).

@@DrSamEllis How to do it then? Because I have foundation, contour, blush... I can put on a cream sunscreen. The powder has its own negatives as you mentioned in the video. The same with sticks and sprays. Maybe the sprays are the best, but I mean....

The bacteria..... you cant clean the brush and I am a oily mess by the end of the day. I could only imagine the oil and bacteria transfer.

I saw on Lab muffin beauty science channel that you have to apply an insane amount of spf powder for it to be enough. The amount you applied is definitely not enough🤨

I agree! That’s why I don’t think powders makes for good first-line protection.

I've checked multiple sites on powder sunscreen products, and all of the reviews say the same thing on each of them: the applicator doesn't work. I must have read a hundred reviews between different powder products, and the consumers all complain about the brush not working and the powder not coming out. In addition, Supergoop appears to have horrible customer service issues and will not do returns, but will instead just send a link to a video showing you how to work the brush. And you KNOW if the company is going to take the time to actually make a video instead of actually helping the customer get their money back, there's a problem. I call b.s. on all of these products. I'll never buy any of them.

Yeah that does seem like a problem! I prefer people use cream and lotion sunscreens anyway, so maybe the universe is trying to send us a sign lol

Which are safe among chemical and physical sunscreens. I saw that chemical sunscreens have many harmful effects on health
