POV Street Photography - Canon 7 and Portra 800!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

YO! I am finally doing my first POV street photography video, using Portra 800 film. For this session, I was in my home neighborhood Brixton, on the south side of London. I pushed the Portra 800 1 stop, to get a more comfortable ISO of 1600. Btw, I am loving using my Canon 7 rangefinder -- its great for easy zone focusing. Film photography def makes street photography tougher!
I used zone focusing for all of my shots - f8, ISO 1600, and shutter speed varied depending on the scene.

That’s what I’m talking about if you don’t use a chest mount. You feel like a freak for 5 mins but it’s the best angle and the footage is always smooth. The man handing out the newspapers was my favourite. I was thinking exactly what you said in the commentary. Was hoping to see the front of him. Loved how he was animated despite no one paying him any attention. Those boots hanging on the umbrella was pretty dope as well.

Yea I need to try the chest mount. I have it but opted to not use it. Will try that next time. And yes! I really wanted the other angle 😅

I think 7:33 was the best shot. Clear subject in focus, facing the camera, and close in. Consider varying your orientation, I didn’t see a single portrait shot. I would also have shot b&w on a gray overcast day like that. Personal preference. Good luck. Street is really tough. I’ve been at it for 3 years so far, and am constantly disappointed with myself.🤦🏼‍♂️

I agree, that's the shot I wanted to mention for the clear subject in focus, framing and the moment. Maybe in the future, this streetmarketing technic, offering commercial bags,(note, that we saw earlier with the man choosing gold chains) will look dated and make this photo like a time capsule. That's the kind of pictures I'm trying to shoot to save a moment, a time period. On another subject, I like this kind of video @Ribsy, I subscribed to follow your adventures and maybe will start my own channel to share some pictures from my travels :) Cheers!

Most of the shots that you took are random moments where nothing particular happens, the guy with the newspapers would have been a great shot if you just waited a bit more to frame it perfectly. Photobooks about street photography can be a great source of inspiration to improve your shots. Documentaries about masters of street photography are also great for improving. This is just my two cents, I'm sure that by shooting more you'll master zone focusing and nail every shot! Ps the canon 7 is a great rf camera, too bad it does not have 28mm frame lines

Ribs, I truly appreciate your vulnerability when it comes to you just getting into street photography. You will get better with time and practice. Then you'll have crispy photos like the crispness of your shirt. 🤣🤣🤣 I'm fuckin' wit'cha bruh. In all seriousness, I saw a comment where someone actually stated that street photography is difficult with a film camera. NO, IT'S NOT!!! Shooting street with film, especially a rangefinder, is not about speed to getting a shot. It's about taking the necessary time to stop, breathe, and frame the right composition for your shot. ALL the great street photographers we're talking about today shot with rangefinders and film. Last time I checked there wasn't a "great" classic galleried street photographer known for their digital mirrorless work with the greatest and latest autofocusing, IBIS camera body, and lens combo. I don't understand these people. Take a look at the work of Joe Greer who shoots Leica film cameras as well as digital. He shot for years in NYC with his M6 and was killin' it. Keep doin' you bruh. It will all come together in time. 💪🏿

haha thanks for the kind words. yea, fully humble and self aware here. its a personal development project. we'll see where it goes. i do find it difficult with a film camera but also simple. you are right, its all about finding shots and being patient enough to get them. still, things like manual focusing add a bit of complexity for people like me who come from heavy digital use. nonetheless, zone focusing has been a great joy to learn and play with. its all about the journey, feel me?

Check out my last 3 posts on Instagram (@joeltunnah) to see Portra 800 shot at box speed, straight from my Plustek 8200i with Silverfast ai. All I did was sharpen a bit in Lightroom, but no contrast or color adjustment. It’s somewhat muted compared to Ektar or Gold, but definitely not pastel.

I see what your saying regarding the image of the subject selling the newspapers at 13:20. But after analyzing it a bit, I think it works just the way it is. If you look to his left there are 3 other subjects in motion. The two in the middle are walking in the opposite direction. While the main subject and the furthest one are walking in the same direction. Also, they're both carrying things. I like how they are also in alignment and the angle at which you caught them gives the scene perspective. Their line is perpendicular to that of the row of buildings. I'd be happy with this one. 📸👍

@@ribsy You're welcome. I live in Denmark where the laws are similar. I always carry a camera with me - except when I go to the very big shopping center located a few kilometers from my home. I subscribed some months ago, cause I loved watching your color print process, you had a niche market... sadly i’m not a fan of street photography maybe because i’m not living in a big town or have not one nearby and a lot of KZreadrs already do this type of things. So maybe you should do a mix of the two, street photography cause you seem to like it and make some prints after instead of a review on the computer, that’s just my two cents, but the goal is doing what you like you Cheers from France

Shooting from the hip on the streets isn't a style I usually enjoy as the photos can look like snapshots. Be careful shooting kids this way - trying to be sneaky is a sure-fire way of looking like a creep, especially with kids. Interacting is a far better way of showing you're not a threat.
