    The most plausible explanation I have heard is that the belt system was created for Western students for extra motivation. When they see they are progressing, they are less likely to drop out from training.

    Wow, it is interesting and sounds realistic and plausible, but no, belt system were created before Asian Martial Arts came to West World, but there are much more colors and ranks after.

    Actually the creation of the extra colour belts is credited to Mikonosuke Kawaishi, a judo master who travelled to the UK and France to spread judo. There he noticed that the original belt system wasn´t working because his students lost motivation very quickly due to lack of some possitive reinforcement, so he thought about adding more belts before the black belt so his students could have some kind of evidence of their progress in a much reasonable time.

    Good video, now just a little addendum, not all martial arts use colored belts, to indicate the student's level, muay thai, for example, does not.
