POUND - Replacing Troublesome Capacitors on Your Original Xbox

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

*Apologies for some potato audio in parts of the recording. Some of this was produced while traveling*
Today we'll be going over how to replace the capacitors on your Xbox to resolve the wavy display issue with our cables. And something I completely forgot to mention in the video; this is the perfect time to get rid of the pesky clock capacitor if you haven't already.

You're meant to push the legs through the pcb, bend out, solder then cut the legs. Having the legs uncut helps you and is super hard without.

The holes wouldn’t be plugged if you used the solder braid correctly. Add fresh solder and heat until it is flowed on both sides, then introduce a fresh piece of desoldering braid. Cutting the braid short and holding with tweezers makes it work much better since it can’t wick all your heat away. You can also hover the braid over the iron to pre-heat the braid without inactivating the flux in the braid and then quickly switch the iron on top of the braid and through hole once you have the solder flowing. Make sure you tip has a bit of solder to conduct heat into the braid but not so much it saturates the braid’s capacity needed to wick solder from the through hole. It’s all technique.

Didn't realize this was a POUND technology video. I had to fix my Xbox HDMI Pound Cable because it wasn't actually soldered to ground when I got it. So I'm a bit dubious about this

I recommend a good solder sucker for through hole. Not only does it remove the old solder, the capacitor usually falls out on it's own without needing to be pulled on

I hope you guys are still active because I found a potential solution. Make sure ALL motherboard screws are tight properly, from the board to the metal casing underneath. This grounds the board and ensures the signal is "clean". I had an xbox have the same wavy issues, but on the default composite cables. Tightened the screws and boom all good.

Hi, it's true we haven't been super active on KZread but we are still working on new products! Thanks for bringing this potential solution to our attention. I'd like to think that during re-assembly we tighten everything down pretty well and that doesn't seem to have fully resolved the issue before. We'll try to pay more attention to this in the future and see if it can be a solution. Cheers!

What capacitors do I need for a whole recap on a 1.0 rev board, I'm not sure that just replace these 3 capacitors show on the video might fix my problem. My OG flashes the image on some TVs.

Hi, I have a problem with my Xbox 1.0 and maybe you can help me. It works perfect with games on a 500gb HDD. When I turn on the console if i plug two controllers they work fine for 10 min and start failing, if I unplug 1 controller the other works just fine at any port, is like there s no enough power supply for both controlls. Do you know what can it be?. Sorry about my English.

I need to replace my CPU capacitors too. I keep seeing different options like "solid" or "polymer" or "low resistance" or "high frequency". Does it matter which type?

  • @emmettturner9452

You should add fresh solder before working a capacitor out like that, especially if the solder is already corroded. If you just add heat and start tilting the capacitor without flowing fresh solder through to both sides it will likely flow on one side and not the other. This could easily damage pads/traces on the other side. Just add solder and dwell a bit before you move the capacitor. Also, 400 may be too hot for some. With a nice iron like that and fresh solder you should be able to get away with less.

READ Make sure you power adapter is 10 amps Make sure pound cable is plugged is plugged into a 5v usb port *flat screens don't always provide 5v* if you have taken out the mother board or power supply some screws are needed for grounding so if all are not present then it also can cause this issue

I have your POUND HD cable for my original Xbox. Last year, I tested it, and it was fine. I haven't really used it since, but I am getting back into streaming. But all of a sudden, the audio is crackling, and voices sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks. I am also getting an "Out of Range" signal on my monitor that I didn't have before, yet I can see the image in OBS studio. I tried an alternate hdmi cable but it isn't the issue. What can I do?

When will the new cable be available? One thing I admire on business is honesty, and pound has proven do be run by that. However there's another difference for 1.4 the video chip is from "focus" manufacturer different from all models namely "conexant" and "xcalibur" the issue could also from the "focus" chipset, also similar HDMI cable from other vendors seem to also have issues with the 1.4 model not the same as here but some kind of a fog ,all other models work fine I read a review on a Amazon .

I think I may have fudged my system :( I'm hoping I didn't but I grabbed a new set that will hopefully solve the problem. I used 5 Sanyo and 3 poofed on me. 2 were fine. Put the old ones back in with the 2 new ones. It boots but now playing a game for a short amount of time eventually starts showing artifacts for a quick second and then completely locks up.

Check your power supply in your xbox. That can be also an issue causing the xbox not turning on. When you remove it from your xbox, flip it upside down and check to make sure that any of the solder joints are not popped (It easily noticeable when there's a black mark showing where it popped) If that's the case, find a another power supply that is a V1.4 part replacement that is correctly correspondent to your motherboard revision version. This is because that the xbox had too much voltage and shot the power supply. I hope this helped.

Has anyone done this and it worked? Be aware that buying caps on ebay are typically fakes. Open them up and they're smaller capacitors wired to the can. You probably want to find local sources for your caps.

2:10 “The brand shouldn’t matter. I’m using Sanyo 3300uF caps rated at 6.3 volts” Whaaaaaaat?! You’re replacing all caps with the same value?! Clearly, you aren’t or you wouldn’t even have a cap kit. Also, the brand certainly does matter. Always use good caps when you replace them since you are going through the effort and the cost difference is negligible compared to a major manufacturer making millions (the reason they use cheap caps in the first place).

  • @al.d9592

Yeah man, this is not how to do this. With a proper iron like this hakko you should be able to free the holes from solder and put the caps through.
