    @@vallee3140 It can be hard to see the eyes in autumn. If you want to divide them then it's best to wait until spring when you can see what you are doing better. Unless you have a massive clump. In this case it's best to divide in autumn as the tubers are less hard then. Good luck.

It took me awhile but I finally figured out that gardening videos from the UK and Ireland call compost what we call potting soil here in the U.S. Compost is rotted plant and paper materials along with animal manure here. So what is our compost called in Ireland?

    Hello Mairead. Bugs and insects will always be with you. They are a necessary ingredient in the garden. We need to learn to embrace them because mostly they do good. Slugs can be a pest to newly sprouting dahlias. Pick them off, use a barrier method, beer traps or place slug pellets at the entrance to your greenhouse. You will never eliminate them but seek to reduce their access to small plants in particular.

    However I think dahlias have been subject to root rot even if the winter is warm, in fact some years ago I planted them in the ground and I left in the same place for all winter season. Only one of five has survived! And the Sicily is not so rainy so I think next year I extract them and I will place in my garage that is certainly dry. What do you think about it?

  • @GardeningatDouentza

    @GardeningatDouentza

    I am sorry to hear about your dahlias. Different types of dahlias have different hardiness levels. There are certain ones that I can leave in the ground over winter here in Ireland and others that are difficult to bring through even in the greenhouse. But your garage sounds like a good place. If I value a certain dahlia I lift and store it until it is big enough to divide and then I experiment outdoors with one piece while keeping the second one safe.

    Hi Rachel, this is my first year trying Dhalias but I was just wondering when do you stop heating your greenhouse? I'm based in Kildare and it's my first year with tropicals. I was gonna put them out in my unheated greenhouse but don't know if it's safe yet?

    Well, we had a very cold night last night so the heat in the greenhouse was switched on here. I hadn't turned it on for a few weeks prior to that because we never had night temperatures that dipped below 5 degrees. In Ireland our magical date for no-more-frost is 1st June. Sometimes I plant my tropicals out a little before that if the weather is good. If you look on my channel you will find tropical planting-out videos from the last two years.

    They usually do better if you pot them first. I don't know where you are but here there is still danger of frost.

    Did the tuber you soaked come back? Mine have shriveled before I got them into storage 😧 so I’m trying to save them!

    Sometimes they come back and sometimes they don't! Certain dahlias, like 'David Howard' for example, are very prone to shrivelling. I've taken to storing ones like this in very slightly damp sand. I hope your dahlia will revive!

    I think I waited too long to store my dahlia tubers, they are shriveling up even before storing them. Do you think they are still viable? Thank you, love your video

    Try soaking them now in warm water with a little fertilizer. If they respond then store them in damp sand overwinter. Some dahlias are just more susceptible to shrivelling than others. Good luck!

    Absolutely. The cultivars don't come true from seed and you will get single flowers from them but you might also get something very special.
