Thought it worth mentioning that varieties of potatoes are like varieties of tomatoes, so only indeterminate varieties of potatoes (like PFA) should be planted in towers, as determinate spuds (for example Kestrel) will only produce tubers on a single level, whilst indeterminate varieties will produce them in multiple layers in the tower.

I got mare's tale in my garden from council made grassy areas beyond my back fence. I used to get really upset each year trying to eradicate it. No chance! Now I get a cup of coffee about 11.00am and wander round the garden for 10 minutes pulling them just like you do, except I mutter "die you b@#*£@d" each time. Gosh I do feel better for it than getting upset! But, don't get me started about bindweed ...

Steve, I'm pretty sure I've seen a better method for preparing the tomatoes. I was watching a video last night and they grew them under lights and heat mats, as they grew they assured lots of water and feed and just at the most critical point of their growth.......left them out in the cold overnight and freeze-dried the lot 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Glad someone’s touched on marestail, I have a thorough infestation on the plot I’ve had a year which hasn’t been worked in a long time and it’s overwhelming to the point I’ve tanked beds and am growing through visqueen in half the plot this year. I also have it at home 😓 where I am weakening it. I drown it and it makes great feed then bag the left overs to sit excluded to light til I’m sure it’s dead. What a long game! I’m enjoying your lives with Tony on a Monday and thanks as always for the wealth of knowledge!

This is unrelated to this video but we just wanted to thank you. Ever since we saw your video a few months ago, we've been keep detailed notes (not records yet). As new gardeners it's already starting to pay off and we will continue to this for the next few years at least. One of the most valuable tips I've heard on this platform. Mare's tail. We have it growing around our garage at the bottom of our garden. Shortly after we bought our house the neighbour told us that the bottom of the garden would get waterlogged without it, so we leave it every year and it dies off in the winter.

@@GreenSideUp I also drilled holes in the sides of the can which allowed air and exscaped heat as I live in an area with high temps. I think it helped.

Great video as usual Steve. Always learning something from you. Did you know that mares tail has antifungal properties and can be boiled up in water for ur potatoes to prevent blight? Used back in the old days but now becoming more popular due to increasing costs of copper etc for crop3, so I'm told. One to research, I've issues on my allotment, it's everywhere. So I'll be giving it a go to see its affects 👌

We’re not so gender specific here in British Columbia. Lol! Most call the prehistoric stuff horse tail. Anyway. Same same. I pull it, I crowd it, I cover it, and I kick it sometimes! The person who figures out a way to keep it from our gardens will be a rich person. However, I’m glad I’m not alone. Because of the high silicon in the leaves they can be used to scour dirty pans. If you want to get rid of it Ammonium Sulphamate works . I’ve eradicated the mares tail over a 300m2 allotment it takes three months.

I have never tried this on mares tail, used it on the compost heap many years ago. Do you have to bruise the mares tail first then spray on?...Steve...😃

@@GreenSideUp i bruised the bits high up of the ground , but the root consists of pipe like push pipe joints, if you pull them they dislocate and a new plant grows from each segment. I used a drip watering can . The concentration was very high 1Kg per 10 litres Mares tails root is similar to an underground tree. This chemical is used on household fabrics for making settees to make them flame proof . It sublimate’s( solid to gas) when burnt and this takes a lot of energy. After 2008 you are only allowed to use it on compost heaps. The potatoes I grew on the same spot 4 months afterwards grew to double their normal size.

Great video and advice Steve, it’s good to follow along and be reminded to check if tomatoes need potting on! I planted a pack of dahlias in some pots and a raised bed in the garden last year. Took a risk not digging them up but they’ve just started to grow back which is delightful 😀

i used to feed the terrapin and koi carp slugs and snails and they loved them but they were pretty wild and would eat anything anyway. They were pretty big tho the terrapin was over a foot long from the pond and would go through the garden eating anything it could find that moved less quickly.

Horsetail is great for homemade fertilizer, rich of silicium.

The less light you allow it to get the faster the main root wil die back. The less photosynthesis they do the less energy will be sent down to the root.

Hi Steve,, With the extra heat from the propagator and heat mat don't the plants become leggy without extra light? Yours don't appear to but mine do,, maybe not enough natural light in my greenhouse.

Hi. I have a question and I'd be greatful if you could help me. I am a first year allotment holder. We prepared our beds and planted some seddlings. We then covered them with brand new green scaffold mesh. Today, the top of the compost has turn green. Is this light pollution from the green mesh we are using or is it dye that has been wash off the mesh? Thanks.

Hi Stu, I would suspect that it is moss, is the bed kept very damp? I have never experienced dye running out of scaffold netting before, nor have I heard of it from others...Steve...😃
