Pot O' Gold - Full Movie | James Stewart, Paulette Goddard, Horace Heidt, Charles Winninger

Фильм және анимация

Jimmy Stewart plays Jimmy Haskell, a failed music store owner who gets involved with a scrappy band of Irish musicians, much to the dismay of his Uncle C.J. (Charles Winninger), an avowed music-hater who had hoped Jimmy would work in his health food store. Bandleader Horace Heidt stars as himself, while Paulette Goddard, fresh from her appearance in Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator, stars as Molly, Jimmy's love interest. This rollicking comedy was loosely inspired by the popular Pot O' Gold radio show, which featured Heidt as its host. And yes, that's really Jimmy Stewart singing!
Director: George Marshall
Writers: Walter DeLeon, Andrew Bennison
Starring: James Stewart, Paulette Goddard, Horace Heidt, Charles Winninger, Mary Gordon

Jimmie Stewart later referred to the film as the worst one he ever appeared in. If this was his worst, his others must be incredible. I enjoyed this whimsical, madcap musical comedy very very much. I'll be watching it again, and I rarely watch a movie more than once. This was pure entertainment. And, it took me way back to my high school days when I played sax in the school stage band. We weren't good, actually taking last place in the battle of the bands, but we were a team and we had fun. The band in this movie was way better. The musical numbers in this are great. Anyone who doesn't enjoy this movie is an Uncle Charlie.

I read this on imdb “Jerry Adler, younger brother of Larry Adler, taught James Stewart how to hold the harmonica and mime its playing for the movie, and was the person who performed the music supposedly done by Stewart, who continued playing the instrument after the movie wrapped.” He was so believable!!

He is still my all-time favourite actor. (Note the Aussie spelling of favorite). It's A Wonderful Life is my favourite movie. Plus other great movies like Harvey, The Philadelphia Story, Mr Smith Goes To Washington, Anatomy Of A Murder. And great westerns like Destry Rides Again, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Shenandoah. He was the best of all of those great actors of that era.

There were great writers, but this was made in the big studio days. The studio executives matched the stars, the scripts and the directors. Stewart, once he was established, could carefully dispute a role but normally wouldn't. The studio generally did a pretty good job, especiallly in the 1930's, in turning out acceptable to great films. Certainly a lot better than today's system where the craziest inmates run the asylum. Give the studio, and his agents, credit for managing Stewart's early career extremely well.

It is a type of musical that was common in the 1930's and 1940's and, of course, appealed to the cultural tastes of the time, circa 1936. Those tastes have done a better job weathering the intervening decades than I suspect the hip hop of today will in 90 years.
