Post-Scarcity Civilizations & Purpose

Ғылым және технология

Technology may one day grant us a Utopia in which virtually all tasks are performed by robots and artificial intelligence. In such a post-scarcity civilization, people may have difficulty finding a purpose to existence. Today we will explore how this may come about, what the consequences of this existential threat might be, and what purposes people may find for themselves in such a future.

    I picture such games more like huge open-ended sandboxes than realms of infinite grinding. Almost every MMO that has tried to go beyond what it is has included means to create, means to interact with more and more believable places and characters, and is obviously aiming for something more akin to a simulation with some roleplay flavor than for a grinding pit of "We forgot about Sisyphus"

    I know this is a joke/meme but I also know a decent fraction of the people joking about it legitimately want it. I've never understood it, are they imagining a catgirl with cat level intelligence that you keep as a pet? Or one with human level intelligence that is their own independent 'person' with all the rights that entails? The first one is morally repugnant and the second one just means that the people that joke about wanting one will get ignored by them like they do with real girls

  • @Treviisolion

    @Treviisolion

    RaidsEpicly First one is basically putting a cat in a humanoid body, not too morally repugnant, at least not if you are ok with genetic modification. Perhaps the more morally repugnant thing to do would be to create a catgirl with human intelligence that was already madly in love with you, which when you got eternity, shouldn’t be that hard to do if you really want to do it. When we do reach this level of post-scarcity, if you still care about ethics, you really want to make certain that you can’t use your powers for despicable things. Afterall, if you live for say a million years, can you truly say at some point you won’t get bored enough to see how it feels to uplift a species of cockroaches to intelligence, let them build their civilizations to levels where they have machine guns, then live your dreams of mowing down insectoid alien scum in the real world, because you already did it several thousands times in the Virtual world and you were bored enough to see if it would be any different in the Real world.

    This chat (the cockroaches rather than catgirls) reminds me of the Stargate Atlantis episode "The Game", where Sheppard and McKay develop their civilisations with different aims. I can totally imagine that level of detail, though I wonder if it'd be necessary to physically uplift the cockroach, when you can just run all the simulations you want, and not worry they can overthrow you and survive your nuclear rebuttal :) Regarding catgirls, aren't they just cute? There is a power dynamic there that does it for me, and perhaps with cats they aren't as mindlessly obedient as other animals. I mean if you love and feed them, they are loyal and loving (and whatever else you want to do with them), whereas if you don't they will just go to your neighbour to fulfil their needs. As long as it's consensual and the catgirl is purring away on your lap, I personally welcome whatever works for you and your partner(s).

    The main pathways I see are: 1. finding joy and happiness, through fun and pleasant experiences and activities, enjoying nature, enjoying solitude or the company of others whenever they wish, training themselves through self-discipline to be happy no matter their situation 2. becoming creative in the arts, even designing whole new universes in virtual reality 3. building, maintaining, and improving relationships with others... family, friends, romance, children, perhaps trying to improve your compassion and kindness towards all, maybe seeking to improve your reputation 4. seeking to improve yourself, learning and improving your skills, becoming as self-sufficient as possible, even using all this time to independently verify all the facts of science, better understand yourself and integrate your subconscious, becoming a master of all trades, personally keep exploring and learning and meeting new people 5. joining a rebel movement that protests against some aspect of this system *** choosing to hibernate for a long time, or choosing to scientifically "reincarnate" by transforming your body so it's much younger and somewhat different and with total amnesia until you come of age, so you can experience life from a fresh perspective again Thoughts?

    completely agree. but do you think that maybe any of these purposes could be taken so far as to create new problems in the society, causing more purpose (in the sense that there are problems that they need to solve, similar to our state as people today)? for example, trying to improve your reputation. do you think that maybe this can grow so far as to become similar to money in the way that it creates hierarchy and shifts between people? or would there be systems in place in this ideal society to prevent that from happening? now, do you think that, since something like reputation or popularity isn't really a factor that is relied on to keep us alive, it wouldn't matter? and maybe that would be preferred as a way to provide more groups of people with purpose?

  • @ghostdreamer7272

    @@kshirin0298 My personal thoughts are that, since people could just ignore it if they didn't care about popularity and wouldn't suffer for it, that then it would only matter to people who cared about it. But that overall, each of these paths proves that humans will continue to be human, there will still be problems, and stories, life to be lived, but the most negative extreme of the spectrum of the sentient experience will have been eliminated. If that makes sense?

  • @kshirin0298

    @kshirin0298

    Dillon Olander ahhh I see! that seems to be ideal. thanks to advancement in psychology, addiction or extreme reliance on social hierarchy wouldn’t ever be much of a serious problem, but it would go to show that humans can still have their own personalities and flaws. although I also think that it is reasonable to expect that people in this society would want, and probably be granted, the ability to experience more negative lives through the medium of a voluntary delusion, with varying safety guards. there’s the idea that true happiness cannot come without feeling pain first, so do you think that with minimal negative experience, humans wouldn’t be able to be as passionate as before? or do you think since purpose and happiness can essentially be boiled down to an illusion humans feel, it can be manufactured outside of having to suffer first? I’m obsessed w the idea of a post scarcity utopia like this tbh, I think the world is progressing towards one (though we’re quite far from close to achieving it) hah

    @@kshirin0298 I actually have been planning to tackle some of those issues in a story I've been brainstorming and outlining on and off for the last 4 years or so! I think that, while hunger/violence/disease have always endangered us, the greatest pain has been very emotional. And those would still be experienced in a post-scarcity utopia, perhaps even to a greater degree since we'd have more time and fewer distractions. Relationship issues, parent/children issues, sibling issues, etc. The need some feel to be competitive, whether in recreational games/activities or creative challenges, even if just competing against yourself. The fact that so many people are afraid of a post-scarcity utopia, saying it would make things meaningless or that death and scarcity are preferable, shows that there would still be issues and it would force us to truly confront the meaning we want to create in our own lives and get at the crux of what life is really all about.

  • @kshirin0298

    @kshirin0298

    3 жыл бұрын

    Dillon Olander hmmm that’s interesting! so you don’t think that a society like this would land in humans opting for an easy but presumably shallow experience by essentially allowing themselves to be deluded into feeling artificial joy at all times? I guess that makes for a more compelling narrative, and a more realistic one, too, considering that I doubt most people would vouch for that kind of illusion to be their new reality. then again, with rises in emotional issues in a post scarcity society, it might become a rampant problem the people would want to put past them imo. I could see arguments for it not being super outrageous, considering most of the human experience (as in, our feelings and perceptions of the world) are just minor illusions anyways, so adding onto it for a happier life wouldn’t necessarily be morally dubious. Although I also completely see in how a story using a post scarcity society to explore raw human nature in a story would work best assuming that doesn’t happen. Plus, under that kind of artificial control, would a person even really be human at that point, by our standards? Something that interests me is how the human psyche would evolve with all of these new changes occurring in the world. Do you think core human qualities will be altered by that stage in existence, or do you think we won’t be much different from how we are today? I feel like we’d be able to process more things going on than the average human today. With a constant stream of information, I think we’d adapt to being less overwhelmed, which might almost dilute our emotional breaking points (which would maybe balance out w the extra emotional burdens a post scarcity society inherently comes with). I’ve always been really interested in human psychology and how it evolves over time w culture, so I wonder how much different people will be if we ever reach a post scarcity utopia. *edit*: btw that story you’re working on sounds awesome!! lmk if/when the book drops fam, I’d love to read smthn like thag

Simply focusing on having a better life and improving financial stability is a great goal in the meantime and may very well increase the odds of living to become immortal.

    Already we have things that occupy people's time that are totally meaningless. People will find ways to keep themselves busy, even if the accomplishment in their own minds. We spend time memorizing meaningless stats about athletes, or we spend hours upon hours grinding in some video game to raise meaningless digital number just a little higher. I think we are programmed to keep ourselves busy, even if we ultimately know it will have no impact in the real world. That kind of work will satisfy our brains enough to continue our existence.

    I'm 31, I have always doubted that society would discover immortality in my lifetime, but I had an interesting thought watching Westworld this past week. My son stands a much better chance at existing long enough to live forever, and his child's chances will be even better. In that way, I will live forever. Currently most people only truly remember back to their great grandparents, and at the moment they die those that they remembered are truly lost. But if my son or eventual grandson lives on forever at least I will be remembered forever... I dont know why that's better than not being remembered, but I find it comforting.

    Great news, made me indeed a little happier today. As a person really interested in the topic, now my expectations are quite high. There's so much interesting things to be covered. Not only stuff like ship size, fuel or mimimumum viable population but also aspects that I don't see discussed a lot - like political systems, freedom of choosing ones way of life, psyhological problems (middle generations probably won't be the happiest people there) or... failed missions (imagine a ship that somehow missed it destination. It's still functional but with no real chance of going anywhere, drifting through empty space full of people that lost their goal and can only wait until something will break beyond repair - kind of dark futurism, but it can happen someday when we try to reach the stars). Nevertheless, whatever you and your team will choose - I'm counting on you ;)

    And if we ever did discover FTL travel, how would leapfrogging over them affect them? Would laws be implemented prohibiting colonizing worlds that generation ships are destined for? Would interfering with a generation ship be grounds for criminal punishment? (In Elite: Dangerous, messing with the people on a generation ship is punishable by marooning.) I guess that wouldn't be a topic for this channel, though...

  • @volcryndarkstar3283

    @volcryndarkstar3283

    Jeremy Kolassa I'd imagine that if FTL travel were to be developed mid-transit for a generation ship, the travellers would have to stop at said ship, take on its passengers, and haul them out to the new star. Could be interesting given that both ships would likely contain populations hundreds or thousands of years removed from one another. The language and cultural barriers would provide an interesting dynamic. Could make a good story.

    Got FTL? Why mess around? Locate them if possible, Intercept them, attach a drive to them, get them there (or back to Earth, if they choose) sooner. (Heinlein's 'Time for the Stars' ended this way, though they had much faster, steady 1-G starships, but the folks back home still saw fit to look for them, when they got FTL.) Problem solved. Now, it's different, if it's a faster *sub*light ship, and rendezvous may not be possible, all you can do is a demoralizing flyby and wave... Then again, why even assume they're cut off from home and don't know that this is now possible? Aren't they getting news and information updates from Earth via radio and laser? Will we lie to them about advances in propulsion (or anything else relevant, like life-extension, or proven suspension) since they left?

    I love these positive futurism videos. I get so tired of the misanthropic comments people post all over the internet about how humanity is bad for itself and for the planet and any large feat of engineering or technology is just our hubris and will eventually be our downfall. I don't believe that nonsense. I know humanity has its problems and its flaws but I also know humanity has tremendous potential to improve and do amazing things. Things a lot of people don't even understand are possible right now. That's why I think the message guys like Isaac Arthur are sending are so important right now. We may be suffering and making mistakes now but we need to believe in ourselves and our ability to get better.

    Isaac I can only echo your sentiment on existential dread and the meaning of life. Such deep thoughts tend to only drag me deeper into a rabbit hole, mostly in a frustrating way, never depressing mind you. Purposely choosing some motivation or direction in life, all the while aware that it really has no weight in the grand scheme of things seems to be quite effective and allows you to live a happier life. All of this is subjective of course, and I shouldn't be surprised someone else has also come up with this, it just feels strange that someone on youtube (of all the places) just comes out and says it. Then again, this is why I come here.

    The 1st time I saw Men in Black, I decided I wanted the universe to be fractal in nature.. The cat's collar... "The Galaxy Rests On Orion's Belt".. I know the reason spirals are so common is gravity and angular momentum etc etc but it's fun to think that everything is more similar, fun to imagine there is something always beyond the horizon... the pin sized black hole has an entire universe expanding behind a dense shell.. We see these spirals, fractals and vortexes when we hallucinate, when we dream... it feels like the nature of all things... It's just more fun to imagine a limitless world than a cold and finite existence with dense no-go zones and apparently devoid of life, with entropy surely having already ended our short run... Now if only the science matched up with more fun fictions... perhaps one day.

    The Smart Ai could have people do "important jobs" that it pretends it cannot do, to give them purpose. Imagine an Ai on a warship that is smarter than everyone on board, but they throw out enough "dumb ideas" in a consistent way to make people think they not intelligent strategically, but they can handle the ship and weapons far better than humans. So humans man weapons stations (for target assigning, etc) and handle strategy while it follows orders, and handles ship manoeuvres and weapons. Other Ais do just enough but have humans still in the loop while they pretend the humans are needed. Fully automated warship systems are attacked/sabotaged by the Ais and set up for catastrophic failure, to maintain the status quo, nothing like a supposed automated warship going bughouse nuts to make people think not having people on board is a bad idea! If an Ai laughs up its sleeves while no one is around to hear it, does it make any sound?

    Thanks Isaac - this is the episode I've been looking forward to for the longest time. A couple of quick comments. Firstly, you briefly touched on the concept of "free will" and its relation to purpose. I think the two biggest culture shocks of the 21st century will be us just starting to edge into post-scarcity (e.g. large numbers of jobs starting to be replaced with automation) and the large-scale acceptance of the non-existence of "free will". I think just getting past the latter of those will be as big a deal as our civilisation adapting to post-scarcity. Secondly, the kind of people who watch your channel, and some other people, may be able to adapt reasonably quickly to a world where to find purpose you look beyond satisfying immediate needs and instead look to huge scale (resources and time) projects to find a purpose. However, the vast majority of folks in the world are good people who will find it massively difficult to make that switch and might not be able to ever do it. We're already in a situation where we're preparing the next generation for the kind of world that won't exist for them and that's just going to get worse. I wonder if anyone will have the political will to try and prepare us for it or whether we're going to get global scale Luddism to try and hold back the tide. Keep up the great work.

    Cayden Jackson well yes, but it's designed that way out of necessity. We need people to be motivated to do work for things to get done. But as that necessity wanes, it does seem reasonable that our current economic paradigm will transform at the very least. But not in my lifetime lol. No, I wrote that before I actually watched the video, based on the title. lol it wasn't as existential crisis inducing as I first thought.

    Assuming we have some method of interstellar travel, i would probably play god for a long time. Get myself a ship, find a nice little patch of space, set up shite, and watch as civilization evolves. Would also probably spend some time pioneering, or at least exhaustively learning, both biology and physics. I am immortal and patient... Or make myself patient. I can afford to spend a million years designing that superdog I wanted my race of gerbils to ride into battle after all. Then toss a wrench into it all and watch them react. That is a favourite pasttime of mine when RPing with friends. Would probably also spend time deconstructing reality to make magic happen... For science! Now, you may be wondering why I would not just pay 5 virtualpotatos a month for some processing capacity on titan and run it in a simulation. Good question. Probably would, at least until i learn the ropes and no longer try to keep the T-Rex and the cows in the same pen... But the real thing should be in "reality", otherwise it is just cheap... Like showing off your base in a game and then revealing that you did it in godmode with a cheat menu...

    This is a topic which is kinda impossible not to become political. Would ultimate technological capabilities mean ultimate utopia and equality? an interesting question and not one with a definite answer. But a good case can be made that more prospertiy has not always resulted in a better life style for all. We already have today the capacity to bring a very high standard of living to everyone on earth were it not because of political decisions. ¿So could be really be sure that an inmense amount of technological development would really end scarcity? I think that the topic of equality should be discussed separately as i believe there are many instances of societies in which by politics alone the standard of living of the whole civilization got improved or worsened regardles of its total avaivability of resources.

    I like to think that the movement towards equality is just humanity's attempt to shed the aristocratic habits of the past. The more we shed expectations of the normalcy of vast inequality, the more innately become more egalitarian. For a handful of people to have more resources than half the world's population combined has been part of humanity's natural order for a long time. We've gradually become less accepting of that idea over the last few centuries, and I don't imagine we'll become more accepting of it again in the future.

    Thats a nice thought and i think many share it but probably not all. And the problem IMO is that not everyone who is in charge of technology thinks like that. There was speculation in the XIX century that the invention of machines would bring prosperity for all, but it soon proved to be wrong as it tended to concentrate wealth in the hands of those who were the owners of those machines. Technology alone does not improve the life of all if it's not particularly and very conciously made by a form of social organization that hast that goal. One might argue that the machines we have now are way too primitive compared to what the future holds in store for us, could be. But in my opinion no matter how advanced the technology if it doesn't come with a better social organization it won't be beneficial for mankind. We could easily end up in a cyber punk distopia and i think were somewhat headed that way already.

    This was a very beautiful episode. I feel that is an important distinction to make because SFIA is always very fascinating, informative, eye-opening or thought-provoking, but...somehow in this episode, the themes and the exploration of them was...beautiful. And that's not how you would describe most episodes. I can't quite put my finger on why...

    One hurdle is the tendency for governments to become conservative and unrepresentative. We will need a new economic rationale in order to become a 'post-scarcity civilization' in the first place. The currently rich would certainly try to prevent such a state of matters.

    they will. However it'll cause the society to split into caste system again. And the problem is... they're not smart enough to run their own technology. So they'll never be able to go much worse then nowaday. And you should not forget that the more complex and expensive new tech becomes, the longer becomes its production chain and the wider the base of this tower. It requires more and more specialists the higher we get up the tech ladder to stay on spot without falling back. Eventually we simply wouldn't be able to afford to have poor and uneducated people anymore if we'd want to go further up...

    Another thing to consider is that if purpose ever does become an issue due to complacency being commonplace, then we might end up genetically engineering ourselves to be less susceptible to laziness and to be more easily inspired and motivated to do things. I agree with what you said in the video though, I don't think it'll come to that, but it's good to know that there are always solutions of course.
