Post-Brexit border fees could drive up UK food inflation • FRANCE 24 English

As post-Brexit border checks for plants and animal products imported from the EU come into effect, Mark Owen talks to Iain Begg, Professor at the European Institute of the London School of Economics about the impact on food inflation. They also discuss post-Brexit migration policy as Irish Taoiseach Simon Harris says Ireland will not “provide a loophole for anybody else’s migration challenges”.

If you can easily adapt in one specific sector - good for you. On the other hand, there are others who will find it more difficult and even others like small importers and traders of such products which may lose their business and livelihood.

UK was struggling even before BREXIT actually was Economically struggling since the 2008 Global economic crises, the Cameroon Government imposed strict austerity Measure in UK to stabilize the Economy since 2010, that policy continued till the end of last decade, and then came the Pandemic and things even become Worse. Actually Economic situation of France is quite Similar to UK that is why France had the Yellow Vest protest and Farmer Protest and many other protest in last few years.

UK was doing OK before Brixit, relationship with EU was good as cheap labour would come in from Poland and others, Many cities were getting big energy infrastructure projects funded by China, Food and products were much cheaper. But after Brixit That UK relationship worsened off with EU and China while relationship with US improved, EU sealed borders and China got kicked from all projects. The aftermath now is That UK is breaking apart as Ireland and Scotland both Want to stay in EU, heavy taxes from all the products at the borders, no Body picks up the big projects after China, that US traps UK to buy more arms while manipulating the UK currency resulting in further inflation, Things now are much more expensive in UK and Poverty is increasing rapidly. Well done!! EU should keep UK this way and teach It's arrogant people a lesson That they would never forget.

Labour will soon be in power and they will be no push overs. They will internalise the market so money is pumped into infrastructure not taken out to enrich tax avoiders. Nor will they play second fiddle to American manuipulation.Which probably benefits tory donors. It is only small businesses that will be affected by the incoming costs. Which probably means we will start making and buying more of our own stuff.

Please do not write ''Ireland'' when you mean ''Northern Ireland''. There are two countries on the island of Ireland. (The Republic of) Ireland, which became independent in 1922, is a sovereign state and member of the EU. Northern Ireland, which is six counties in the north east of the island of Ireland, is part of the UK. In such difficult matters, it is important to use accurate language. Bonne journée.

The checks are essential as we don't want inferior goods. Of course every country does this.....including the EU. The extra cost of imported goods will encourage UK farmers to produce more. But what is amazing is the polemic of the interviewer. Is he supposed to be impartial. The extra cost to consumers will be negligible.

How does it feel to be part of the EU as members of the public, to have little Sovereignty? Deprived from voting for the two most powerful institutions, the EU Council & the EU Commission, both of which have legislative initiative, the ability to enact laws, or their presidents. Only able to vote for the weak EU Parliament without legislative initiative. There is a democratic deficit in the EU. There are many things could bring the downfall of the EU not least the lack of direct, transparent democracy.

the EU council is made up of the prime ministers and presidents of member countries. And they are all voted in. The EU commission is made up of members of the EU parliament. Like in most other democracies, we don't get to vote on who will have a specific position in the government. Ministers are appointed by the ruling parties. And you seem to forget that every country has veto rights. The EU cannot force us to do anything.

The EU isn’t a nation. Initiatives come from the member nations, through their executive governments, often as directed by the legislative parliamentarians you vote for domestically. Unelected bureaucrats selected by the elected, like in all nations (whether you understand that or not), processes legislative initiatives. Especially because they have to be compatible with the national laws in all the different nations, and be translated so they mean the same things in all official languages in the EU nations. The lawmakers in the EU Parliament then votes for the bills. The democratic foundation is no much different than in the UK. Only difference is that it is more complicated to formulate laws with so many nations involved. And that individual nations singlehanded can veto important decisions. And that it’s the government in the different nation that are the executive power(s).
