Why doesn't this get as much praise as Seven Churches? This thing rules, the riffs are amazing, the shredding licks, Jeff's vocals, the drumming-it's all top notch. Another reason why 1986 was one of the best years in metal.

I AGREE 100%. BEYOND THE GATES IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN SEVEN CHURCHES. THE RIFFS ARE FAR MORE BETTER, THE PRODUCTION IS SUPERIOR. THE SHITTY FUCKING PRODUCTION ON SEVEN CHURCHES IS WHAT RUINED IT FOR ME.

@@coyleigh2860 you must be deaf. The production helped Seven Churches a lot. It is raw and rapid and distorting. It was the same producer that did "Scream Bloody Gore" and many others. Back then he was the best one band could get. Whereas Carl Canedy did this one and ruined other great albums like Anthrax' "Spreading The Disease" and Overkill's "Feel The Fire" but "Beyond The Gates" was his worst. The drums are the only thing that sounds great on this one. But nevertheless this album has a morbid atmosphere to it that makes it a classic too. And please no re-recording with what Jeff calls "Possessed" nowadays. Let the sleeping beast lie!

German wikipedia says the opposite, Carl Canedy's production on Beyond the Gates is shitty, Seven Churches had a good production, an Joe Satriani's production on The Eyes of Horror is the best of all. For me the productions don't really differ but the songs. And Seven Churches is not my favourite.

@@SEP73NTRION Satriani produced the EP, but it was engineered by 2 guys at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, including John Cuniberti who also engineered a lot of Satriani's stuff. The role of producer doesn't always determine whether something "sounds good." Satriani probably oversaw the actual performance, song arrangements etc. and gave pointers. In the case of Seven Churches, no separate engineer is credited so we can safely assume Randy Burns is responsible for it sounding good.

Between Deatrh and Thrash Metal,the band was pretty good.I saw a show here is São Paulo,with Jeff Becerra on wheelchair.There were guys from another group playing as Possessed,helping him with the songs from the 3 albums.Great gig! The new cd is fucking insane too! Bbang your head!

Incredibly influential, despite being less hyped than 7 churches. Music-wise this is the first real death metal album for me. 7c had a lot more of a thrash influence imo.

Ferroequus Domain I don't know, I can hear more thrash, and even early black metal, in 7 Churches riffs, though the sound itself is a bit heavier. To my rears the atmosphere of the riffs on BTG is more essential death metal. Although personally I really like BTG's production, it's what pushes for the thrash classification, because it's not as wall-of-sound as 7C. I think every one of the early death metal metal credits 7C for influence but in actual attitude and atmosphere BTG is closer to late 80s death metal. Or maybe I'm in the probably very small minority of people who just like this album more and am looking for an excuse : ) All this takes nothing away from either the musical greatness or the influence of 7C of course.

I feel the same way. The track Phantasm is almost a complete Thrash Song, aside from the changes. I think all Possessed releases have thrash elements, but overall Death Metal vibe. Seven Churches being the most with a death metal sound.

@@Oni64 and yes, Phantasm has been composed by Larry and he was not Mike T. Larry was the more melodic guy who wanted Possessed to get in a more metallica-ish direction. From the musical point of view Larrye was the reason that they disbanded in June 1987.

Seven Churches had a really good guitar tone, sad that this one doesn't sound as thick and strong.

The best death metal band early than death. Lov both so hard some friends ugue but possessed is death for ever for runes but death not first. Possesed is.

@@jeffreyhaskins5342 no they disbanded on 1st of June, 1987 and Jeff shat on his dealers and got robbed in June 1990 just about the time when Mike Torrao began reforming the band with Bob Yost. The classic Possessed played their last two gigs with Megadeth on 30th and 31th of May, 1987, the only time Larry,Mike T.,Mike S. and Jeff played "Storm In My Mind" live.

I remember hearing the demos of this in high school and thinking "This is going to be SICK!" Somewhere along the way, the guitar tones got declawed and neutered.

Typical 80 rock nonsense coked out producers achieving lack luster productions ,but either freaking way this motha sukka destroys ,a true classic .Gatefold is in my collection!!!

No Carl Canedy. Satriani produced Eyes of Horror. Both can't hold a candle to Randy Burns who produced the ferocious debut album.

Geez, this sounds awful. The production on Seven Churches is sooo much better.

The mixing on this is complete ass, legit demo tape tier. Songs are great though, such a shame.
