@@user-pdogiP78V I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I find it odd that you named Symbolic and Spiritual Healing, which just so happen to be my first and second most favorite albums from Death. It certainly rubs me the wrong way to hear them called "kinda boring".

@@Grease-Goblin Actually, I can remove Spiritual Healing because of monstrous growls and some very good riffs. Anyway, there are fillers on this album. But awful schreaming and weird atmosphere on Symbolic makes me uncomfortable. For example, Without Judgement would have been 100 times better if Chuck had sung a bit better. P.S. I dunno anything about cancer, so maybe he was struggling while recording the album.

    1. Overactive Imagination Your existence is a script, life for you is a perfomance, play out the leading role. Directing and premeditating every move That creates the act of manipulation Mastering the art of deception. That increases your sick addiction It's an overactive imagination that enslaves your empty shell [Lead: Chuck] Existing in dimensions of addictive obsession [Lead: Andy] Your script will run short of ideas The story will soon end itself People to trust come short in number. Like a plague your lies spread fast across the world Mastering the art of deception That increases your sick addition It's an overactive imagination that enslaves your empty shell 2. In Human Form People of the earth beware, It is here in human form An atrocity laced with greed. Filled with evil intentions. Ready to attack [Lead: Andy] Look to the air for stories to choose, Who will be your next victim Profitting on visions of others, dark emotions run through its veins Its motives are false its mind is insane A distant planet with no signs of life To become a home for this alien breed. Scientists of the world unite, your services are more than needed This creature in human form is out of control [Lead: Chuck] Looks can be deceiving, see beyond the shell Flesh and eyes mean nothing. The truth, time it will tell Before you think you fool the world. What comes around goes around. Shown for what you are, a waste of life [Lead: Andy] 3. Jealousy What do you want from me, what is it you expect I have spoken my mind from deep inside my soul Behind the eyes is a place on one will be able to touch Containing thoughts that cannot be taken away or replaced You want what is not yours, Jealousy You want what you cannot have, Jealousy Spiteful harsh words, it comes as no real surprise. Tell me what you are. [Lead: Chuck, Andy] I cannot understand how you seem to exist On what people create for you, good must turn bad. Behind the eyes is a place on one will be able to touch Containing thoughts that cannot be taken away or replaced You want what is not yours, Jealousy You want what you cannot have, Jealousy 4. Trapped In A Corner I want to watch you drown in your lies. The end of your masquerade, a matter of time Interwining lies, domination, control Feed his twisted nature It is sickening to see dreams die A word of advice, fate's patience is growning short. Fake down to your mind and appearance You will fall short of the dreams to destroy In time you will find yourself trapped in a corner These four words my friend, I promise you will not forget [Lead: Andy, Chuck] I am one of many that see through your lies Hiding will do you no good, many seek revenge. Soon to become a victim of what you live to create, and cannot have. It is sickening to see dreams die A word of advice, fate's patience is growning short. Fake down to your mind and appearance You will fall short of the dreams to destroy 5. Nothing Is Everything Living like us and sharing our day. In another world very far away A diffirent existence, yet virtually the same. Aggression is sadness and laughter is pain Look deep into their eyes for what they have to say Emotions take control of life everyday. Unpredictable variations of behavior, Hold the key to the mental door Where nothing is everything, and everything is nothing Staring beyond the wall a thousand times over [Lead: Chuck] Seeing a part of them that is real Just imagine how it might feel To be denied of what life has to give Behind mental shadows they must live Look deep into their eyes for what they have to say Emotions take control of life everyday. 6. Mentally Blind You see your vision and no one else's Your every word filled with sarcasm Crucify people with invisible knowledge Verbal destruction with each compulsion We will see where you go The future for you is nowhere Every minute a cliche of your kind Too much to say from a person with no respect Your accusations you will regret From the mentally blind come ideas that are poison Take away the power, a shallow person you will find. [Lead: Chuck] What would you do without your pathetic narrow-minded approach to life, that reflects your lack of abilities Your opinions are self-destructive Despair is your gain, delight is corruption Destined to fall prey to your stories, creating problems for your consumption We will see where you go The future for you is nowhere Every minute a cliche of your kind Too much to say from a person with no respect Your accusations you will regret From the mentally blind come ideas that are poison Take away the power, a shallow person you will find. 7. Individual Thought Patterns So quick to judge, so easily we forget, What it's like to be dissected Where feelings are tossed aside Like a drug it feeds the imagination of minds that go unanalyzed Followers to the leaders of mass hypnotic corruption that live their lives only to criticize Where is the invisible line that we must draw to create individual thought patterns [Lead: Chuck] Prisoners of mental deception be free within singular judgement Twisting words to control the masses To cover up one's self insecurities Like a drug it feeds the imagination of minds that go unanalyzed Followers to the leaders of mass hypnotic corruption that live their lives only to criticize Where is the invisible line that we must draw to create individual thought 8. Destiny [Lead: Andy] Time is a thing we must accept The unexpected I sometimes fear. Just when I feel there's no excuse for what happens, Things fall into place I know there is no way to avoid the pain that we must go through to find the other half that is true Destiny is what we all seek Destiny was waiting for you and me [Lead: Chuck] I believe behind confusion awaits the truth for us Past the obstacles we face I value our life and trust Years of questioning why things happen the way they do in life Wishing that I could turn back time, So we could join our souls I know there is no way to avoid the pain that we must go through to find the other half that is true Destiny is what we all seek Destiny was waiting for you and me [Lead: Chuck] 9. Out Of Touch Trapped in a lost world of brutality So weak are the ones that must rely on shock to push this so called force that inspires their call to be extreme so it seems is a mental crutch To cover up for those that are completely out of touch Say what you want, I know the truth when it comes to your kind [Lead: Chuck] In time we'll see who lasts In time you will disappear Who are you to question my sincerity For now you are high on yourself Drowning in your dreams of misguided hope To be extreme so it seems is a mental crutch To cover up for those that are completely out of touch 10. The Philosopher Do you feel what I feel, see what I see, hear what I hear There is a line you must draw between your dream world and reality Do you live my life or share the breath I breathe Lies feed your judgement of others Behold how the blind lead each other The philosopher You know so much about nothing at all [Lead: Chuck] Ideas that fall under shadows of theories that stand tall Thoughts that grow narrow upon being verbally released Your mind is not your own, what sounds more mentally stimulating is how you make your choice So you preach about how I'm supposed to be, yet you don't know your own sexuality Lies feed your judgement of others Behold how the blind lead each other The philosopher You know so much about nothing at all

I mean if we're going to talk jazz Fusion influenced death metal then Cynic - Focus is the one and came out the same year as this. Sean and Paul arguably pushed Chuck towards this amazing sound beginning with Human, Chuck built off that with a forward thinking attitude for ITP and carried those progressive tendancies to the end of his career. Also the Watchtower influence had a part to play in this sound for sure.

This is one of the greatest albums EVER written. In ALL genres of music. The TALENT that this album composes can compete with any musical artistry that has EVER been composed. ( Put that in your pipe and smoke it Mozart). Steve Digiorgio, the bassist, alone holds one of the top spots for genius writing on this album. This man is the reason I bought a fretless bass, and to this day strive to play as he played on this album. INDIVIDUAL THOUGHT PATTERNS... One of the greatest works of art in human history.

The cool thing about that opening riff is it's so well written it tricked my ear into thinking it was in regular meter for YEARS then I actually looked at the tab and it's actually switching. Haha maybe it's because of Gene's regular hihat hits that come in and out, and I think that was a subconscious influence on a lot of the first material Im gonna release for my band Spectria starting this year. Death is a HUGE influence on me.

I can't count the many times I've sat just thinking "how can anyone come up with a riff/arrangement like THAT??" 7:50 12:47 16:13 21:10 ....just to name a few - I'm awe-struck every single time I hear this album. pretty sure it's the same guy who mixed and mastered it in 93: Alan Douches, pretty sure it was something forced with the remastering of the original tapes, it kills nothing is everything, but this has been out for 5 years now and I finally got over that fault

  • @BluntAnims

The best remaster is the one that came out in 2008. None ever talks about it because hardly any Death fans have heard that particular remaster. It changes nothing, apart from balance the volume and make the instruments more clear, especially drum fills, and it doesn't over-compress everything into a brick wall of noise like this master does. The 2008 one is like the original, but better balanced and more clear. Good luck finding it though! I can't find a legit download of it on the entire internet.

Guys like Lombardo, Benante, Menza, Gadd, Colaiuta, and Weckl. When I heard this, it was like someone blended those jazz fusion drummers with the metal drummers.... Something completely new and mind blowing energed - Gene Hoglan... The sheer musicality and imagination on this, and Symbolic totally changed my perception on what was possible in music.

I met him too once, at a strapping young lad gig (city tour in europe/swiss). Perhaps 100 ppl in the crowd, front row almost empty, was like a private gig. Gave the roadie a piece of good hash i had as a gift for the superb performance. Gene was looking for me at the venue later to thank me in person, hahaha. Golden.

Time is a thing we must accept The unexpected I sometimes fear Just when I feel there's no excuse for what happens Things fall into place I know there is no way to avoid the pain that we must go through To find the other half that is true Destiny is what we all seek Destiny was waiting for you and me I believe behind confusion awaits the truth for us Past the obstacles we face I value our life and trust Years of questioning why things happen the way they do in life Wishing that I could turn back time So we could join our souls

I am 36 and I discovered Death in my later teens. I have specific memories of moments that seem otherwise insignificant, but this music was there with me and it is kind of fitting given what Chuck says about the subtle things in life, the unseen, always there in the mundane hidden way, human longing for meaning. Working at that time meant nothing to me but I had to spend 8 1/2 hours a day doing it, and then there was making music, the big passion. This was such a fitting soundtrack looking back. The feeling that there is more to life, the longing for just that, the frustration with circumstances, the release through music.... Thank you Chuck :)
