Positive Education With Character Strengths

Created by the VIA Institute, this 8 minute documentary depicts character strengths in action in an elementary school classroom. Includes interviews with students who actively learn about and use their strengths, and interviews with teachers and parents. Embodies an approach to the classroom of creating a culture of learning -- a learning environment based in strengths for each child to realize the fullest potential and be at their best.
Features Dr. Neal Mayerson, Chairman of the VIA Institute, who discusses the value of creating a culture of learning based in character strengths. Also integrates interview clips with Jay Sharp, a 4th grade teacher at Bella Vista Elementary School in Salt Lake City, Utah. He discusses his child-centered approach to the classroom based firmly in the VIA character strengths.
Produced by Enlightened Media.
The VIA Institute is a nonprofit organization that created the science-based, VIA Classification of universally-endorsed character strengths and virtues. It houses the VIA Survey, the tool that measures 24 strengths of character.

Oh no, I have tears 😭 this is so beautiful! I'm a 22 years old today but a few years from now I'll be creating a network of innovative and inclusive schools because my dream is that all of our children and teenagers can receive an education like this

Mr. Sharp was my 5th grade teacher so many years ago and I must say out of any teacher or adult figure, he was the first person to teach me to see from the others perspective. Empathy was his main practice, it was written on the walls and in his ever demeanor. My older brother had Jay as a teacher and my family became friends with him over the many years. I thank Mr. Sharp for shaping many generations to be tolerant, more loving, and full of knowledge. You have impacted many lives, Thank you!

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I have always taught my students these Values: Truth, Right-conduct, Love, Peace & Non-violence which encompasses all of these Character Strengths. Even after 32 years of teaching, my ex-students confirm that out of all they learned, the Values is what they remember & made a difference to their lives then & now. “CHARACTER IS THE END OF EDUCATION” Sri SATHYA Sai Baba 💕

This video made me miss Mr. Sharp! The students were so lucky to get him for as long as they did. I know they’ve all been sad to have him gone. I loved that he centered his curriculum around character strengths.

Why teach the concepts when they could be the byproduct of the learning process? It would be more beneficial wouldn't it? And why teach "character" strengths and not just help discover strengths themselves. If you help children find and develop their strengths and interests wouldn't that naturally cover a good deal of the "character" strengths? Kudos for doing something different. A step in a different direction is sometimes as valuable as a step in the right direction.
