I absolutely believe in a news diet. We aren't meant to consume news that way. I, too, have had people be shocked that I'm not staying aware, but honestly, you would have to live under a rock to not know what is happening. I just choose how I find out. I love finding people who have the same idea! Yay for ditching social norms!

I agree with you about holidays. I celebrated when the kids were young, but it was so stressful. Now we all get together to share a meal and spend a lovely relaxing day together. No stress, no fuss, no presents, no decorations. Been doing this for 20 years! Haven't watched the news for 30 years. Listen to it occasionally on the radio. I only drive my car once a week for work because I have to. Also live furniture free when I watched your video about it. I love listening to your ideas and find it very useful and interesting. Thank you ladies, keep up the great work! ❤

Hello! I call it..."going on a news diet." And it absolutely does NOT mean you are living in oblivion or denial. Pretty much you hear, or see, what is going on and can get caught up if need be. Your talk reminded me of growing up with 6/7 channels on our TV, and how my parents would watch the nightly news (once) and then watch sitcoms or movies, until bedtime. We, also, as a family, ate dinner together, and then my dad "forced" us to walk around the block every night! Might be where my love of walking came from. 👣Thanks for all the sensible tidbits. After all these years she still start every coversation with me trying to give me a round-up of what's going on in the world. 😂 Your Dad is a wise man, we also love walking. I could walk for the whole day sometimes!

Another great video - thank you both. I live alone so what I do may not be applicable to larger households - I keep my bathwater and transfer the water one or two buckets at a time to flush the loo (in between baths I just have a whole body wash with a cloth and minimal water) but "yellow is mellow, brown must go down" so as you say flushing is not always necessary anyway.

Absolute pleasure! Thank you for watching 🙏🏼 We also used our shower water to flush during the water crisis. It was such an eye opener. In those situations you really get to learn how to live with less. We have learnt the same with electricity as we have regular load shedding in our country.

Not flushing no. 1 is fine. 👍🏻 I don't celebrate holidays at all.

I can't with the whole news thing either. People think they're being informed when in truth they are being manipulated and lied to. If we all opted out the madness would stop instantly. I'm right there with y'all on the holiday's too, it's just more insanity. I notice that I instinctively feel the need to go inward and spend time in silence during the end of year holiday season, but when spring rolls around I get excited and feel like decorating and giving gifts. I long for the day I can live somewhere that I can get by on foot or bicycle, and I'm transitioning to furniture free and loving it. But the flushing situation, can't go there 😂. Anyway, enjoyed the video as usual!

Managing without a car tricky if you live outside a town or city, but see that you are Cape Town based , lovely to hear your accents, used to live in SA for a while many years ago. Your way of living is inspiring, and not having chairs etc means you will be fit and strong from using your muscles 😊

Yes, it is tricky if you're not in the city. We are currently in Gordon's Bay and here we have to have a car. We are moving back to the city and then we'll definitely either not use it much or sell it altogether depending on where we end up. Happy you're enjoying our vids and yes we have really become much stronger and felxible since living like this! 💪🏼

Pacific Northwest, US. No, we don't flush every time. Water rates are outrageous. We use minimal lights and electricity in general, as electric rates are outrageous! We make do.

Our water rates aren't too bad but our electricity is very expensive. We have been hit with load shedding for several years now so we have learnt how to live without it for longer periods of time. We have a gas cooker, a non-electric slow cooker, a chargeable portable power supply (so we can keep working) and a chargeable lamp. That's really all you need. (unless you live somewhere vert cold)

We started our news fast in 2020 and have never been happier. I laugh at people's pure shock when I tell them that. We get the same: but you have to stay abreast, but then nobody can answer when you follow that up with a friendly: why. I pay my tax on time, voted last month and can keep up in social situations. If it's important the news will reach me.

Ich spüle auch nur noch nach dem "großen Geschäft" 🧻🚽 Seit vielen Jahren nutze ich zuhause auch kein Toilettenpapier mehr. Ich habe dafür eine Handdusche im Bad. Auf öffentlichen Toiletten gebe ich das Toilettenpapier in den Hygieneeimer. So wird es mit dem Müll verbrannt und landet nicht im Wasseraufbereitungskreislauf.

Greetings once again from Australia! I havent watched the news or read a paper for as long as I can remember!! Because its winter here I only shower every 2nd day. I own a car but try to walk or bike ride as much as I can particulary coming back to town living. Ive had the same car sunce 2002 and it's done only just over 80000 kms lol. Before that I only owned one other car. I love my low maintenance life! Im not materialistic. I have rainwater tanks for my garden, my bird bath, my cats water bowl and hand washing and rinsing. Love your videos! ❤

@MostlyMindful There are "alternative", "low maintenance" people leading low impact lifestyles but they are pretty few and far between. Was just saying to a friend today that I find it sad that supermarkets in our town lock their outside bins to stop dumpster diving with so many people struggling to eat. Also that it's sad that our rubbish dump doesn't have a tip shop.

Water shortage is going to be the biggest thing. Showering by quickly getting wet, then turn off the water and scrub, then quick rinse. Also I need to figure out how to use shower / bath water to flush the toilet (not to mention needing a worldwide effort towards composting toilets.

Completely agree! The fact that a whole region of a country can almost run out of water is very telling. For flushing the toilet with shower or bath water you can open the cistern and as soon as you flush you fill the cistern from the bucket to stop the water filling in through the supply pipe.

I think i was way ahead of the curve with the news and gave up watching or listening to it in 2005 whilst suffering with a deep depression and a ton of my own crisis - I decided not to go back to it. Like yourselves I came under a lot of criticism but now even one of my critics has also stopped!!! additionally I've given up the use of a comb or brush, instead I use my fingers to run through my hair when I wash it. I also don't subscribe to the obsession of daily baths/ showers (I believe some actually do twice daily showers), I use my own hand knitted clothes for a wipe down instead. Love your channel - I found you by accident whilst falling down the furniture free rabbit hole ;-)

When in Rome…… We’ll, in Athens Greece the toilets cannot handle toilet paper. So - people either use it and dispose of it in covered containers OR we wash immediately (bidet or tub). Personally, washing is the most hygienic and for those with sensitivity to the additives in the paper it is a by far more comfortable option. Optimization is a great guiding principle! -V

That's so interesting! About Athens. Bidets are not. common thing here in South Africa, so most of us have not experienced that. I have used them once or twice on travels many years back and did rather enjoy it.

I compost our waste ( kitchen and bathroom) in a simple DIY set up . This is based on the wonderful book “ Humanure Handbook” . There are many benefits to our soil . Of course this is difficult to do in the city.

Do you live in the country? We went to a community garden once where they had a composting toilet. We had to shovel sawdust into it after using it. Is this similar to what you do?

@@MostlyMindful yes . We also use old leaves for cover material. Yes, we live in a rural area . Our laws allow for this as long as we have a traditional septic system as well. Great channel BTW.

What do you mean by cleaning the toilet every day? In Denmark you use your toilet brush if it needs to be cleaned, wich is mostly every day. And airing out any smells. I have halfed my use of toilet paper and use a wet cloth after use of paper for nr. 2. And often a bidet spray with water for nr. 1. My bottom preferes this. I would love a full bidet toilet seat.

If you're talking about skid marks, we don't really have them but then we also use the brush. The cleaning is more about an energetic ritual performed by the Japanese. Thanks for watching and weighing in x
