FURNITURE FREE LIVING | Sleeping on the floor to age strong

Come along as we throw ourselves into the world of furniture-free living for a second time!
We’re Ang and Sporty, longtime minimalists since 2008. “Why have you traded your bed for camping mattresses again?” you ask. We’ll tell you about the unexpected health benefits of sleeping on the floor, from better posture to cooler nights.
Traditionally humans have trained our bodies to just age, rather than focusing on aging strong. We’re on a mission to find ways to do the latter.
Watch the video to find out how this lifestyle keeps us fit, flexible, and ready to tackle whatever life throws our way.

    About ten years ago I learned about becoming more floor-centric to keep strong. I thought about it for a long time, but just never did anything until about five years ago when I bought some floor seats (they are like cushions that have a back to them). I used them for a while but not really often until I read again about the benefits of sitting on the floor and (insert gasp here!) sleeping on the floor. I bought an inexpensive futon from Amazon to begin what I thought would be a short experiment. And I have been sleeping on the floor ever since. It did take me well over a week to adjust and I did need to add a foam pad underneath, but I absolutely love sleeping on the floor and try to sit on the floor for at least part of the day. It has definitely helped my hips and spine. I am totally with you on trying new things and staying as strong as possible as long as possible. Flexible bodies and flexible minds. I really enjoyed your video. Thank you for posting it. Barbara

    Hi Barbara, thank you for taking the time to respond in such detail! So glad you enjoyed the video. We are always thrilled to hear of other people enjoying furniture free living. It's so inspiring to hear when someone just does a thing even if it sounds slightly crazy 😬 We have also experienced countless benefits from moving to the floor so we're with you on that too! On the floor for the foreseeable for sure!

    Nearing eighty here. Stumbled upon your video. Gave it a try for a nap and was was suprised that I slept well. Brought me back to childhood days of tent camping. Will try it out again tonight. Wonder if it will long term help with balance.

    Wow! This is incredible! Well done for trying it out. We also loved the idea of "camping" at home. It will definitely help with balance. Each time you get up off the floor, you fire and strengthen different muscles. You've just inspired another video. We'll post one about improving balance tips soon!

    It's wonderful to meet like-minded individuals! I also embrace a furniture-free lifestyle, owning only two chairs for guests. I sleep on the floor, engage in callisthenics, running, cycling, and prefer walking in barefoot shoes. The health advantages are evident: sitting on the floor enhances flexibility, and a nutritious diet contributes to a robust, healthy, and prolonged life, as much as one's DNA allows. I'm eagerly anticipating your next video!

    Thank you for your lovely comment! We are amazed at the amount of people who are either already doing this or are interested in it. I am also a big barefoot shoes fan. Sadly, Vibrams are no longer being imported into our country so I will have to look for an alternative soon. Some viewers have asked about how we exercise and what we eat, so those videos will be next 🤩

    I used to live like this in Japan and it was great! I moved back to the States and slipped back into the western lifestyle. Not sure how I feel about that, but getting up and down off the floor without moaning and groaning is definitely a good thing.

    Hello over there in Israel! Welcome 😉 Yes, we were also surprised, thinking it might be too hard. We tried a futon but have found these much more comfortable and easier to move around. One thing to remember is that if you don't have a rug or a carpet on the floor, consider getting one of lifting the mattress off the surface with a low wooden frame. It could be made out of palettes if you're looking for a cheaper option. You could also use a futon base. This stops the mattress from getting damp and/or moldy.

    I feel the opposite. I think the hard surface is not good for your joints. The way your legs are positioned is bad for the hips. Maybe if you were younger but not in your older age like you are. I don’t see the point.

  • @MostlyMindful

    @MostlyMindful

    Hi, thanks so much for your comment. We have felt significant benefits from sleeping on the floor. Our spines are better aligned which in turn has helped our joint pain. The fact that we get up off the floor and down again multiple times a day is great exercise for the hip joints, hamstrings, and quads and has made us that much stronger in the lower body. That said, it may not be for everyone and if you are struggling with back or joint pain, please do consult a physician before you try this.

    I'm 69 and been sleeping on the floor for nearly a year. Not even on a mattress, just in a sleeping bag on a rug. I feel the hard surface IS good for my joints. I used to get aches and pains sleeping in the bed. One thing I do, though, is to have a small camping pillow between my knees, and, as a side sleeper, I feel as if this aligns my knees well. I'm not sure why I feel more comfortable on the floor; but I think it may be that the lack of give rests the muscles, which have to work hard opposing the give in a mattress.
