Portugal in the EU

Portugal, known for its rich history, deep-rooted traditions, and stunning natural beauty, became a member of the European Union (EU) in 1986. In this video, we will explore Portugal's journey through its political shifts, economic evolutions, and significant historical moments. We'll also examine Portugal's role and representation within the EU, understanding how the country collaborates and interacts with the larger European community. Our objective is to shed light on the dynamic relationship between Portugal and the EU, highlighting both the strong ties and the unique challenges they've faced over the years.

As a Portuguese, I would like to say that this video is, from a general perspective, very representative of what Portugal is. Our country is filled with beautiful cities and landscapes, friendly people, and delicious food, which makes it a highly appealing tourist destination. However, life here is not easy for the majority of Portuguese people. The population has been losing purchasing power and quality of life, and social disparities are increasing. At the moment, housing is undoubtedly one of the biggest issues in Portugal - rents are extremely high, and salaries are very low. It's impossible for a young person to leave their parents' home and become independent. The (excessive) tourism is one of the reasons that led to increased rents in city centers and has caused them to lose their soul and essence. Personally, I am a supporter of the European Union and recognize its importance in the development and modernization of many economic and social sectors. I love the fact that I can easily travel conveniently between EU countries. In fact, it's easier and cheaper for me to catch a flight to central Europe than to go to Lisbon - public transportation here works poorly, and we are dependent on cars... However, at the same time, there are still many factors that make me not like the EU. The expansion of the Exclusive Economic Zone would be positive for our economy. However, the truth is that we do not have the means and ships to fully exploit it because when we joined the EU, much of our fishing and agriculture were destroyed and abandoned. Overall, I like being Portuguese and European. Nevertheless, given the economic difficulties experienced in my country, I feel that I will have to emigrate to a central European country. As the video rightly says, this is indeed a problem in Portugal - it doesn't offer good conditions for young people, leading them to emigrate to other countries with more attractive opportunities. Finally, I would like to congratulate the entire team that produced this video! To everyone who may read this comment, I would like to say that you are all welcome in our country, regardless of nationality, religion, sexual orientation, etc.

I believe this comment should be pinned, I'm a 26 year old Portuguese man that is planning to move to Germany because I'd like to be able to build a future for my family, which is not possible in Portugal at the moment, unless you're rich or come from influential families.

Woow. I would not explain thiss any better. I actually left Portugal almost 13 years ago, given the challanges I faced right after finishing college, and found a much higher ceiling in the UK, which lost its appeal since their departure from the EU unfortunately but it's still OK for skilled workers. Now that I am a bit wiser, Portugal is a great place to invest should you have the means of course, but it is at the expense of the people that are less furtunate. Something I must say although I am really bias, Portuguese people are low key specialist in they areas, I would urge the country to invest in the people because I see more and more fantastic professionals leaving because its just impossible to live there let alone dream. May be with this new digital era, things will change who knows.

Personally, I believe all EU countries will benefit from integrating more -- it's the only way we can assert our interests on the world stage and avoid becoming puppets of other powers. I also love that we're a block of super diverse countries and cultures, but we reach agreements through dialogue and compromise (not through violence like we're seeing around the world).

The bigger the EU becomes the more difficult it will be to manage all EU member countries with the VETO perk attached. So the VETO will likely have to be removed for the majority vote for the EU to push further into enlargement. I do not understand the mindset of some moronic idiots thinking that the EU is a dictatorship and claiming it to be anti democratic while the opposite is true. These people have never lived in a real dictatorship to make these comments. Portugal understands this better then most western EU skeptics.

Economically, all EU countries should benefit from further integration with more economic growth and less waste, politically, integration will help Europeans to protect their interest around the world. If done right, integration will be a good thing for Europeans, the question is on the process of getting there and doing it the right way that works for all the EU members, but I do think that in this quickly changing world with powers like the US and China, EU countries are going to have to integrate more and to expand if they want to stay relevant around the world, relevant in the sense of being a big power and protecting European interest, which are quite different from US or China interest.

Macau's an interesting case. Basically after the 12-3 incident in December 1966 during which there were huge Cultural Revolution-inspired riots, the colonial government agreed to meet the demands of the protesters, and the colonial government recognized Macau as de facto PRC control. However, the Estado Novo regime continued to view Macau as an Overseas Province. That of course changed with the Carnation Revolution. Portugal offered to withdraw completely from Macau by late 1974, but China declined in favor of a later time because it sought to preserve international and local confidence in Hong Kong which was still British at the time. In December 1975, they withdrew their remaining troops. In 1976, the Portuguese government recognized Macau as a territory rather than an overseas province. In 1979, they established relations with the PRC and ended relations with the ROC. After the Sino-British Joint Declaration was signed in 1984, negotiations began for Macau and under the Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration in 1987, the Portuguese government officially finally recognized what was already established in 1966. In 1993, the Basic Law of Macau was passed by the PRC's National People's Congress. Macau's handover in 1999 made it the last European colony in Asia, and indeed ending over 400 years of Portuguese rule in the region, 442 to be exact!

Macau has a neat flag! It's a lotus with a bridge and lines for water below it with stars above it, on a nice shade of green. The lotus flower in full bloom represents the everlasting prosperity of Macau (which they're certainly not wrong about that; gambling being banned in Mainland China definitely helps). The bridge is the Governor Nobre de Carvalho Bridge, that links Macau Peninsula with Taipa. The bridge and water represent Macau's position as a port and its important role. And like the stars of Hong Kong's flag, the stars represent the PRC and Macau's relation with it, only this time the stars are yellow like the PRC's flag instead of red like Hong Kong's Macau has its own language too, called patuá. Called the sweet language, it's more than just a Portuguese-based language as it's combined with Malay, Cantonese, and Sinhala too! It's the result of Macau being such a major hub. The language developed first mainly among the descendants of Portuguese settlers. They'd marry women from Portuguese Malacca, Portuguese India and Portuguese Ceylon rather than from neighboring China. The modern version arose in the late 19th century, when Macanese men began marrying Chinese women from Macau and the Pearl River Delta region. British influence from neighboring Hong Kong also added English words.

As long as fertility rate of Greece (and rest of southern Europe) remains lower than that of northern Europe, I believe things will go relatively ok. It is usually (always someone would say) when fertility rate increases that they create "economic/financial crises" to reduce it (with unemployment etc.). Considering that northern Europe imports immigrants from Asia and Africa and South and Central America by the millions each year, I fail to think of a reason why they do this. Also, they seem to have no problem with countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE and Israel being at the same time wealthy and having a higher than 2.1 fertility rate. I suppose that this suits the ideological organization that governs the world, because this way they can maintain US/british/french etc. influence there for ever. I am greek btw, and I like the EU about as much as I like Greece and Germany: all of them entities governed by an organization based on deceiving many people, and which we all hope will deliver the best nevertheless (because they have left us all no other alternative basically - while calling themselves democrats at the same time. Funny.).

As a EU citizen i see nothing but advantages, being the only disadvantage the perception that EU limits the production of certain goods in some countries, so that others produce it instead, raising dependencies within the union. With such climate and farmlands available, you wouldn't expect that we would need to import so many food goods like fruit or vegetables from for example Spain, or cereals from other countries for example, which increase the dependency on imports when there is capacity for self production and avoid this deficit between imports and exports

As Portuguese, I see the EU as the future and as the main partner. It is true that the Portuguese have a very good relationship with the EU. I believe that it is absolutely essential that there is greater integration in the EU, even if only in foreign affairs and that they be quicker to make decisions. However, there are important things to do: 1 - The EU needs to put more pressure on various member states, but especially with Portugal, to improve the economy and respect European funds. 2 - there should be greater supervision by the EU to confirm the functioning of institutions in member states that receive support from the EU. 3 - however, the EU must invest more in modernizing its public services and creating greater online connections. 4 - The EU cannot be so dependent on third parties, in situations and making technological and innovative decisions and their productions. 5 - EU should relaunch an industrial and production economy across several European countries, ensuring better quality and protecting technological intelligence and European know-how. It's just my opinion.

The list goes on and on and on...

Consumption is decriminalized, but the drugs are not legalized! The substances are still prohibited, but the repercussions for being found in possession of an amount of the substance for personal use (not for sale!)are no longer criminal and those found in possession of drugs are redirected to services and have the drug seized. The production and sale of the drug itself is still illegal. Impossible to perform if the country doesn't have a National Health System to support it in first place (for free detox and methadone, psychologists) and a large effort of the Social Services at all levels, among many other things implemented all at the same time. It is a big operation with multiple entities working together since 2000-2001. To give you an idea - a simple thing as having all pharmacies of the entire country cooperating with the needles exchange program, allowing addicts to come in as any regular costumer to ask for a new syringe/needle for free, had a big impact in preventing the spread of diseases as HIV and hepatites by shared needles. Consumption is treated as a (social) disease, drug traffic is illegal and therefore treated as a crime.

True. Our development in the XXI century is nearly nil. Politicians in Portugal are incompetent. The party that has ruled the majority of times, PS, does not govern for the long term and in a strategic way. It governs for every four years to make sure it gets re-elected. In the end we are a democracy and the people that govern us are our mirror. We can’t complain much. We, the people, are the ones to blame.

Of course, because they are trying to make southern Europe less wealthy than northern Europe (when I say northern Europe, apparently they include Hungary and Romania in it). Notice for example how it is only in southern european countries that bad things (at least relevant to their economies) happen, such as they deliberately have high indebtment (to increase taxation, to keep growth low), and also they were the only ones who had their GDP per capita decrease so much due to the virus. I cannot find a plausible reason why they do this, considering how many immigrants from Asia and Africa countries in northern Europe import yearly. I am greek and this seems completely unfair to me for now.

As I'm now currently living in Estonia, I'm glad to see Portugal sees the threat that Russia poses to Europe at large, and it amazed me how much Portugal supported Ukraine since February 2022, with statistics showing the Portuguese public has some of the highest levels of support from the public for Ukraine. I hope to see Portugal integrating more into the wider EU in the future, including rail infrastructure wise - I hope the country changes opinion and builds standard gauge high speed railway instead of Iberian gauge as they (stupidly) planned.

I'm portuguese and despite being left-leaning politically, i fully support Ukraine. I think we do understand what Ukraine is going through because it kinda mirrors Portugal own history. Nowadays we are one of the oldest countries on Earth, but we had to fight countless times against much bigger nations to keep it that way (specially against Spain, which nowadays i wouldn't trade for any other country as our neighbors). Usually we would also get invaded instead of invading (except during our unfortunate dark-age of exploration, colonization and slavery when we invaded and exploited people from Africa and South-America). During the 90's/early 2000's we also had many Ukrainian people that emigrated to our country (i worked with some) and they are, overall, genuine good people that hardly ever caused any trouble. And finally i think most of us have always seen the relationship between Ukraine and Russia kinda like the same as the relationship between Portugal and Spain: like brothers. And real brothers, even if they don't agree in many things, usually try to help when the other needs or, at the very least, don't interfere with the life of the other... and never, EVER, goes to the brother's house and tries to appropriate it! In my view it would be like nowadays Spain trying to invade Portugal just because a crazy power-hungry dictator said so!... and that's just sad to even imagine.

In fact they are worse than Arabs, because at least Arabs segregate themselves in their own communities and don't actually pose a threat to the cultural continuum of the Portuguese heritage. Brazilians absolutely terraforms the entire land into little Brazil. Under the pretense of sharing the "same language" they will infiltrare into everything Portuguese and make it Brazilian. Look at Portuguese children, most of them basically write Brazilian and speak a strange hybrid already, fruit of being immersed in an overwhelmingly Brazilian dominated social and public media 24/7. This would never have happened with Arabic. No matter how many Arabs lived here, the cultural landscape of Portugal will always remain the same. Brazilians on the other hand are fundamentally turning this country into another Brazil. And I would rather live in Morocco than in Brazil.

everything about politics and the country is quite accurate. The biggest downside to Portugal's development is the business side of things. Most foreigners there mention experiencing a lack of innovation as most companies aren't prone to take risks. New ideas are put aside, keeping the status quo, as no one wants to be the escape goat. I always found customer service inefficient, and who you know carrying too much weight to get things expedited. But it is a social thing that i hope will go away with globalization: hiring more foreign workers and the influx of Brazilians to our workforce, bringing a much needed fresh perspective.

🇵🇹Portugal is a country made for tourism with a beautiful history for the history books, but for living I can say that it is simply unsustainable, very high cost of living, with successive governments applying austerity policies, at the moment we have a government that is destroying every sector of our society, low wages and low purchasing power, unaffordable housing, rising taxes, the health system completely in a shambles, many immigrants living on the streets, in short, only people who have no idea what it's like to live here come to live in Portugal. Every day I see Brazilians and other people of different nationalities saying that they want to live in Portugal, coming with false hopes attracted by false propaganda.

  • @mage0killer

As a Portuguese citizen living abroad for 10+ years I can't emphasize enough how big the issue of wages and cost of living has become. It was bad when I decided to leave and it's just gotten worse and worse over the years. Housing is unaffordable (sadly an issue shared with most of the Western world) and living costs are sky high. A liter of fuel or kg of meat both cost nearly the same if not more as they do in countries where the average wage is two or three times higher. The perception most people get is that greedy company owners try to pay their employees as little as possible to pocket as much of the profit as they possibly can. It's a "save yourself and damn everyone else" mentality that is not necessarily unique but strongly exacerbated by the other factors I've mentioned. I would not consider returning unless all of these things were tackled and, even if that were to happen, these are things that take generations to influence slightly let alone completely fix... Maybe I'll spend a considerable amount of time there when I retire but that's in a few decades so we'll see what happens.
