STORYLINE
Greece won soccer's European soccer's biggest prize in Lisbon on Sunday by beating Portugal 1-0 in the Euro 2004 final - a feat that set off huge celebrations in and around the Portuguese capital.
The fact that Greece had never won a game at a major championship before made the achievement that much more amazing.
Greeks fans, many of whom had arrived just days earlier after Greece defeated the Czech Republic to advance to the final, danced in the streets after their nation was crowned football kings of Europe.
And the celebrations weren't limited to the victors - despite their loss, thousands of Portuguese also spilled out into the streets to pay tribute to a Portugal side that electrified the nation during their month-long run to the final.
The Greeks managed to beat the Portuguese twice, including 2-1 in the opening game of Group A, then knocked out defending champion France and ousted the Czech Republic, widely regarded the best team in the championship, in the semi-final.
With the Athens Olympics looming next month, Greeks have plenty to celebrate. They will be European Champion for four years although they still have to qualify for the next championship co-hosted by Austria and Switzerland in 2008.

@@akldnxk you must know nothing about Euro 2004 man...Greece won Portugal twice, won the match against the best team in that tournament, Czech, and the favourites France. Don't be jealous.

@@div92 I'm also sorry if I offended you, the truth is we also love the Greeks a lot, in fact, I've been living in Greece for 1 year, but these are points of view, luck for Qatar I hope Greece will qualify and surprise like the World Cup in Brazil!
I love how respectful the fans were to each other afterwards...unlike the English in this euro.

Ich war das und es war abgesehen vom spiel und Ergebnis, einfach ein Erlebnis für sich, vor und nach dem dem Spiel haben wir Griechen mit den Portugiesen einfach zusammen gefeiert, keine Streit keine Probleme, Respekt an Portugal. ❤

Talk about class from the Portuguese fans. Letting the Greece celebrate near them, and even joining in for the celebrations. What a huge contradiction with the obnoxious English fans from 2021.

@@richardbrown2316 I agree but it is completely possible in the next few decades (or in your words "in our lifetime.") The Euro follows the one tie knockout rounds so it's much more likely for smaller teams to win as opposed to 2 tie matchups. Also, it's not like club football where money has completely taken over.

At some point, we do not know yet about, a small nation could get an „easy path“ to the final. Once the easy path is created and the team wins the games, i am sure you agree that there is a chance to win the Euro for a small nation.
