PORTREE - The Capital Of The Isle Of Skye! A Day Out From Our Cottage - Scottish Highlands - Ep58

Willie, Sarah and their dog, Jack Spaniels, continue their biggest adventure yet - leaving their suburban life and moving over the sea to a remote cottage on the Isle of Skye, off the west coast of the Scottish Highlands.
In this episode, the Skye Lifer's venture out of the glen with both pesky pups to attempt some errands in the island's capital - the colourful harbour town of Portree.
While there, we make the most of a welcome break in the stormy winter weather to explore the enigmatic Apothecary's Tower.
Plus, join us as we celebrate Pancake Day in true Scottish style and Willie becomes slightly unhinged as he ticks another job off the ever-lengthening list of things to do to Yolanda, the Landrover Defender.!
Thanks for watching & see you in the next video!
Sarah, Willie, Jack & Nori x
Pancake Recipe:
225g Self Raising Flour
25g Caster Sugar
40g butter (melted)
1 egg
250 ml milk
Sieve the dry ingredients, slowly mix in the milk, butter & egg. Whisk until smooth & rest for at least 10 minutes before cooking on a hot griddle or skillet, with oil or butter.
Flip when bubbles start to appear & pancakes are golden brown.

When my wife and I visited Portree right before the pandemic, we had a brand new rental car (we were the first renters of this car). Even though I was new to driving on the other side of the road, by the time we made it to Skye I felt like a veteran and the car had survived my initiation without a scratch. We got to Portree and parked in a big lot (right next to the police station). When we ot back to our car, someone backed into our rental! 😳 Anyway, whoever did it was a local and they left a note on our car. In fact that left two notes in case one blew away. They provided their contact info and promised to pay for the damages. Being cynical Americans we thought to ourselves, suuuure they will! Once we got back to the rental agency they didn't care that we had the responsible person's contact info, they wanted $800US for the modest damage. We had no choice but to pay it. Once we got home we contacted the person who hit our car. They were so kind and offered to call our rental company to sort it out. We declined that kind offer and eventually managed to get the insurance sorted and got our $800 back. We're now Facebook friends with the person who backed into our rental and have remained in touch. We cannot wait to get back to Skye this year to meet them in person! There are good people in this world.

Made me smile when Willie said about the weather changes near the start of the video. Reminded me of a saying my Mum used to have: "Whatever the weather, we'll weather the weather whether we like it or not!" And how nice to visit Portree. Brought back some lovely memories of visiting there on a holiday with my late much loved and much missed sister Moira. A really enjoyable video as always, thank you. Take care 🙂

The reason why the "correct" way to pronounce Nutella should be "Nootella" it's because was created by Italian Pietro Ferrero around 1950. At the time, every foreign words in Italy were pronounced using the Italian phonetics and in Italy we pronounce the "u" as "oo". Since the brand became super famous in a very short period of time, for Italians the sound Nootella became a brand on its on therefore it is, and will always be, Nootella for us, even if we know nowdays which is the proper way to pronounce the word nut. Nutella was invented in Italy right after the second world war and, mostly for sentimental reasons, we love to pronounce it the way our granparents did 😊

I've lived in the USA for most of my life, and have lived in various states including Missouri, Illinois, Colorado, Texas, Florida, New York, New Hampshire and Iowa, and I have never seen, heard of, or eaten what you displayed and called "thick pancakes." This is not a nationwide American tradition. Everywhere I have lived or visited I made or was served thin pancakes made the way Sarah made them in this video. When I was a wee girl, maple syrup was very expensive, so my mother served pancakes with honey which she warmed up in a double-boiler on the stovetop. I still like them with honey. Maple syrup was so expensive when I was little that whenever friends visited Vermont or New Hampshire, they would bring bottles of maple syrup and boxes of maple sugar candies home as gifts for their friends and relatives, and they were much prized.

I do enjoy your videos. Moving to new places is such a fun and unexpected surprises from the experience. When we moved to Spain sight on unseen and barely knowing any Spanish we loved our non tourist approach. My mother was bent on finding older opportunities to visit sights older than Greek and Roman sites. How about looking at cavemen art. Yep during Spring break we traveled across Spain to a little hamlet called Santillana Del Mar to visit The Altamira Cave. The hamlet buildings including the church were Romanesque. Animals were at night on the lower level of the house. Farmers would be brought to fields during day light and drove back in. So my brother about 10 decided to join this taking cows to field and back. Via Vaca, Ole. We took the tour which we were the only tourist. With tiny bits of oil the artist would work with only a bit of light they drew the story. We say the dark version with wee bit of oil. Then lights were turned back on. The picture was a fluid depiction of a great hunt. No lines to keep the picture level. And colors were fairly vivid still. We started a story to go with the drawings. For some reason we whispered. Maybe out of respect to the artist. Going to the Vatican and being quiet in the Sistine chapel. Amazing. Sadly due to humans expelling carbon Dioxide the pictures were suffering. Only limited number of scientists were allowed to visit the paints. Now they have massive plexiglass system to keep the pictures safe. We found the church with court yards like a set from a historical base movie.. in the morning we could hear the women gossiping as they threaded wet clothes on a line crossing the street above. We ended up staying 3 days vs the one day we were going to spend. The day we arrived we were invited by a wedding couple to be their guest at their reception. Like said such opportunities like to having focusing running from one tourist site the next. I said we should by postcards rather than trying to take endless pictures of required pictures every one would do. These quirky discoveries were far more meaningful than the usual touring. I bet you both have numerous adventures in Skye. These are more memorable experiences. Are time living in Spain. As military family we would move every couple of years. So we were quick to explore our new assignment my dad was given. No real tourists books to follow. No asked my brother to with cows he followed them and mimic what they did. One farmer got him a stick to use. So each day twice he would wait for the farmers. Not much conversation but they found out my brother was American. My brother was worried if he didn’t show up. But they knew he wouldn’t be joining for ever. So your doggies are fun to watch. Thanks for your visit to town.

Ha ha - love seeing that Sarah is standing on a couple of bricks beside Willie at the end! I sympathise - I'm 5'3" and hubby is 6'3" so a lot of our wedding pics were taken with me standing on higher ground/step.

I'd happily put up with miserable weather when the scenery is so beautiful outside. Can I persuade you to visit the Skye Highland Games in the Summer? Should be lots of fun, with Whisky, Highland Dancers, and hunky men in kilts! Pleeeease! 🙏🙏🙏💙💙💙
