50 years living off grid on a remote island in Orkney

My parents have been farming a rare breed of seaweed-eating sheep on a remote island in Scotland called Auskerry for nearly half a century, but age and ill health is forcing them to face a future away from our island home. With so much still to do on the farm, I left my job as a TV reporter in Cardiff, Wales for four months in order to help. I took a camera and some lenses and decided to make a KZread series to show what life is really like on the island where I grew up, and was named after.
In episode 7, we encounter a major problem with the petrol pump we use to collect drinking water from the natural spring that flows through the cliff, plus mum shows off her vegetable garden that's taken decades of hard work to cultivate, and then we unpack all the food we need to sustain a life on an island with no shops!
Please share and subscribe for future episodes. I'd love to see your comments on the series so far as it's the first time I've done something like this.

Hello, I love your family"s story so much. I grew up in the Sonorn desert, (SW USA). While that filled me with wonder for the natural world it has been my 35 years in Maine, in the same house, starting my garden from nothing and having the life style that where we live in Maine offers. My trips to visit friends 1 hour away on the coast often meant taking the truck and pitchfork in case a storm had filled the cove beaches with sea weed. I sent a picture of my peat ginger bread houses. Put it in a link in the video of cutting peat. I put the last one that was still in the house out on the deck for the animals. I watched as a squirral wrestled with it. He/she managed to knock it over the edge, to the ground and the last time I looked there was no sign of it. The small junco birds are feeling a bit left out as I saw them come to the deck and look around for the peat houses. Well, thanks so much. What a pleasure., Kris

I have not even finished this video yet..... 6 minutes in....& already I can totally empathize with your mom. I have struggled with very similar things. We use 30lb propane tanks hooked to our cooking stove in order to not have a service 'bill' & I can't tell you how frustrating it is if my husband is not home & I can't get the stupid wrench to get it open! Tools often are not made for women's hand size & my husband seems to have super human strength. When he closes something it is done with maximum force & I am left weakly struggling to open what ever he touched. I have struggled with hauling tons of 50lb bags of coal that we heat our home with when he was laid up after a surgery. The hopper is over chest high for me! I try very hard to maintain my composure, but I am sure that if I had close neighbors they would turn pale at the blue streak I cuss up. The struggle is more mental than physical because mentally you feel like a failure or that you somehow can not figure out the most basic of tasks. I am sometimes reduced to tears. & I used to be a very physically strong person, but doing the repetitious work necessary to run our small farming operation left me with a spine surgery. I also struggle with operating things like our tractor. I know HOW to drive it but I so rarely need to do so that I forget how to get it started & I lack basic safety knowledge that my husband just naturally has from years of operating heavy equipment. there is always a fear there, that I will get hurt or damage something that we cannot afford to repair. It is really hard to be brave through these things & to persevere. It is also very hard for the one who "should Know how" to do something to not be able to help.

But my mum is likely to be in the town of Kirkwall in the late autumn and she has a workshop for all her products if you wanted to see all that? You can contact her nearer the time through isleofauskerry.com 👍 Take care and thanks for watching!

I look forward to every new video you post. Your Mom's garden looked amazing! It just goes to show that many times the solutions we are forced, out of necessity, to find in nature, provide the best results. I pay a lot of money for little jugs of liquid seaweed to enhance the microbiology in my garden soil, and to make the heirloom organic vegetables I grow, healthier, tastier, and more nutritious. Out of necessity, your Mom had to use what she had available to enhance her poor rocky soil, and that was seaweed. And as usual, what God provided in nature, is the best soil enhancer and garden fertilizer on the planet. And just by seeing how lush and green your Mom's garden is, you know the veggies are healthy and tasty. The more I see of the day to day chores that go into living on the island, the more I am amazed at all the necessities of life that God managed to put into that beautiful little windswept island. Yet, it still requires a lot of human effort and hard work on the part of your parents to harvest those resources. And It reminds me of how much most of us take those resources for granted, even though they are necessary for life.

Came across this channel yesterday, and ive binged on it since, your mother's love of her garden is beautiful. I had an allotment at my friends farm for 30 years ,you just cant beat fresh veg, sadly my ability to maintain the garden decreased over the years due to ill health and i no longer have it.l lost my friend at the beginning of the year and its left a huge hole which will never be filled. Keep doing what you're doing and help your parents stay on that idyllic ilsand for as long as possible and add to the memories that will last a lifetime, cheers fae Pat here in Ayrshire. Just found this channel, really enjoying your Auskerry tales. And very resonant with my childhood. My folks moved to Harris in ‘72, and we lived off grid, so things like the gas running out (always half way through cooking dinner) and pumps not working are very familiar. Also Frae Bentos pies. My dad built a road to our over 25 years in his “spare time” so we do now have electric. Was very envious of your peat banks, I cut peat but yours looks fine and deep. Thank you for telling these tales.

What an amazing amount of work to live day by day off grid in this amazing land RESPECT is such an inadequate word don’t know if anything would be a truly adequate description I love the reality of true pioneers and that would describe your life here … what incredible people… thank you so much for sharing the truest reality of this life … as a gardener myself the utmost respect for mom … there is a love for the land that can not be taught but must be experienced and lived … Happy New Year wishing blessings unending

Ah this is very kind Isabella, thank you!! My parents are incredible people and I don’t know how they kept all the plates of living here spinning for so long. But yes I think love for their environment gave them to strength to do just that! Thanks very much for watching - take care ❤️
