As a linguist, I always find it interesting to see people attack polyglots online. Most of the world sees bilingualism -- or multilingualism -- in black-and-white, but linguists view it simply as a spectrum. Since you can never know every lexical item, every syntactic rule, or every pragmatic nuance of a linguistic system, we have to view bi- or multilingualism as a process, not as a product. Lindie, maak jy geen sorg nie! Hierdie opmerke is nie baie belangrik nie.

+Lindie Botes I know I'm a year late haha but I was impressed by your Chinese! You made a couple of mistakes naturally, but especially for having only learned it for one year at that point, I feel like you did incredibly well with pronunciation. You'd give many of your non-native Chinese speaker colleagues a run for their money haha!

In addition to that I speak fluent Italian and Spanish, I'm studying German and I've just started learning Japanese Hiragana and basic grammar. By the end of college, so 4 or 5 years, I want to be fluent at least in these five languages. Is that a fair goal?

I'm a french speaker, i've learn english in school and studied german all by myself and after 3 years now i read 18-19 century and old german poetry so i began to learn Japanese and made nice progress. If you forget everything at the end because you don't use it, it was not worth the time you put into it.

But my mother's tongue is actually a special dialect of the Slovenian language, which is spoken mostly in the northeastern part of the country and is quite different from the standard language. I also understand Serbo-Croatian, Czech and Slovak, because they are very similar to Slovenian. I started learning English and German in primary school and I speak both languages fluently. Maybe your teacher wasn't that good...If you are really motivated in learning French, you would try all you can in watching French TV, getting French friends and stuff like that...Learing any language calls for these basics...Go on with your French, it is a fascinating language and very rich. Remember that for sometime it has been the "lingua franca" in Europe before English became the new lingua franca in the world... Now it seems that Chinese is becoming more important than ever, coming to a close third position, if I am not wrong??

+Mauricio Montenegro You possibly speak them better than most polyglots speak the many languages they like to boast about. The truth is most polyglots speak some of the languages on a native level, these are mostly three or four. The others get a little rusty over time and need to be refreshed when they prepare to have conversations in these languages. Ich spreche übrigens auch Deutsch als Muttersprache. Ich bin immer geschmeichelt, wenn jemand meine Sprache lernt, insbesondere da sie ja immer als so hart und hässlich angesehen wird. ^^

Le français est très basic...Chinese as well...Your Chinese is very basic and so is your Japanese...Your hearing is good though and all you need is practice practice and practice. You shouls maybe choose languages that are more essentiaml to you and then concentrate on those languages..This is jus a suggestion...

OK, if your French is only a trhee-month-bvaby then it is pretty good... As said, maybe you should focus on languages that are more useful to you should you choose to work as a translator or interpreter... Asian languages are coming up so picking up Chinese is a good option along with English and French; Japanese could also be one or even Russian as I see the future could be somewhere there as well.... Good luck in your studies
