Portrait Artist of the Year | Cardiff | S01 E04 | Reel Truth Documentaries

The final heat takes Joan Bakewell and Frank Skinner to Wales where artists paint a topless Gavin Henson, Lucian Freud's muse Sue Tilley and war veteran Simon Weston.
Portrait Artist of the Year is a competition art show aiming to find the best portrait painter of the year.
Each episode features a regional competition and contestants are challenged to produce a portrait of one of three famous sitters.
As the competition goes on, three artists will remain, and these finalists will have their work displayed in the world-famous National Portrait Gallery in London. The winner eventually receives a $10,000 commission to become a permanent part of the British Library!

I'm a watercolor painter. I have NEVER encountered anyone with the opinion that you should not sign your artwork. On the contrary, signing it is a symbolic ritual indicating completion as much as informing the viewers of the identity of the artist.

I'm glad that they changed tack on this show as the seasons progressed. I hate that we have 21 artists and we don't even get a look at half the paintings. Very frustrating, I feel like cattle being shoved along in the direction the judges want me to go. I was really surprised and disappointed by their choice this episode. I feel it was based on his self portrait rather than the work he did during the competition. I LOVED the vibrant colored 3/4 portrait, but we didn't even get to see it finished. But I still enjoy the show and am overjoyed to have the opportunity to watch these older episodes.

Agree totally. As one who is learning this craft, I would have liked more time with all the painters as they moved through the creative process and with their completed works rather than the constant comments and focus upon the judges. Also, not signing a work is dreadful advice in this day and time.

@@southernlady5085 The judges were not saying they shouldn't sign their work, just not to sign it on the front of the painting. The common practice of contemporary painters is to put all the information, title, medium, size, date and name on the back, because sticking a signature on the front is not only distracting to the actual work, but recalls the older convention of the old masters, which feels cheesy to do these days. The general idea is, if it doesn't help the actual painting in anyway, is shouldn't be on the front.

I was scrolling down to find someone with this response. The "not signing" a piece of art idea is very narrow minded. I ALWAYS told my students to sign their work and date it (year), as I myself do. It doesn't have to be ostentatious but will be very useful at some point in the future. How many unsigned "masterpieces" have to go through an extensive and exhausting process just to possibly identify the creator and then estimate at which point in the artist's career it was produced? (I even forget when I painted many of my own pieces! - lol)There is an entire show just based on this detective work called "Fake or Fortune". Always sign your work and date it!

Like so many others? It is literally the Essence of a portrait...resemblance and likeness. It is a joke to every other painter here who actually got their subject right. It did not remotely look like the man he was painting. It should never have won. But the judges also seem to struggle with remembering what the competition is about. I feel for those other artists here...loosing to someone who painted someone in his head but certainly no one who was in the room.

To recap, one judge is an artist, himself, and appreciates a particular style, one judge makes her living describing art and has a handle on what happens to be selling well and the third judge has seen too much of a particular style, tainting her eyes, so that "refreshing" to her is simply something she does not see on a regular basis; perhaps not the best selection of a panel.

Well, as someone who's been in the art world for a few decades, I can see where they're coming from. They have to select art, not just based personal subjective likes (opinions we all have), but also on what feels like a development in painting. Painting is a discourse, and there has a lot that has been done in painting over the centuries, so what's considered engaging in contemporary times are works that some how attempt to push beyond the established conventions. What seems like a technical masterpiece, may be relatively dull and irrelevant within the discourse of painting, because they could be a dime a dozen. What the judges are trying to do is find works that go beyond the mere established technique, convention etc. and find something that possibly offers something new to painting.

That is the first time I strongly disagree with the judges. It is not only that I don't find his painting appealing, I also think it shouldn't be even shortlisted. There were so many paintings, beautiful paintings. His was... meh, he didn't do well through this 4h period. I think they have chosen him just because his submition was nice. Yes it was, but his competition paitning wasn't.

These judges need to get an eye test. If the subject of the painting didn’t like it, maybe there’s a reason.

love the premise of this show. but this is the worst episode - apart from lino, the other shortlisted works were really not more exceptional than the others, esp the one that captured the wicked gaze. agree w all comments on bad editing that tells us who the shortlisted are in the first 15 mins, & wanting more time on the works. hoping later seasons will hv a bit more diversity. in all ways.

I'm also disappointed in both artists, and judges. ---And, who was the artist that did the cowl self-portrait? I was so hoping to see it closer...

What a larf having Sue Tilly to model! If old Lucien was there, it would have taken him the four hours to mix his paint for the first brushstroke… lol😂

It is very clear art is subjective. Then, some of the modern art should not be selling for millions of dollars!!

To the artists don't be discourage by these judges as they should be picking one each in lieu of discussing a colaborated decision. Thay have had losts of practice picking what the anouncer calls a verdict... which hardly any of us agree with.

I don't get it!! is it a competition of the 3 top worst artist?? after the best are complimented by the judges, they always end up choosing the ones that did the worst in the competition! EVRY TIME!!! I guess is a British thing..

I love every episode, am totally hooked on it , but now that i've watched 5 or 6 episodes, the sexism in the judges picks of "shortlists" is starting to get to me. But yeah...we all know this is no big news in the art world. I did love Nick's portrait , but Pamela and Margaret should have been standing next to him at the end.

I happened upon this series and have thoroughly enjoyed it, but the judges fell off this time. The winner simply didn't manage his time well and they pass that off as if it was some intentional stylistic choice. Just looking over the shoulders there were some amazing paintings there that got almost no camera time. That super colorful one, the one that tackled the full figure of the guy w his shirt off. This is the sort of thing that turns regular people off to art, when you start pretending there's some amazing thing there that only they're capable of seeing. Nah, it was just a rushed painting where the guy was insecure about his drawing, spent way too much time there, then hurried with the actual painting.

Signature! What idiocy is it to not want a signature on a painting? Might as well write a letter, and let everyone guess who wrote it. She should be kicked off the panel.
