This is classic Portlandia. 100% dialed in on a character, gently poking fun with very specific quirks & such that we all recognize. And carrying an idea all the way up the absurdist hill to its absurdist apex.

I used to work at Sony Music in the catalog group where we put out all the big deluxe box sets like this. Everyone in the company thought this was the best skit ever.

I worked at the Sony plant in Carrollton, Ga. They would have box sets for cheap at employee sales. I would flip them at the local CD trade store for cash. I kept some good ones like the Pink Floyd stuff!

The best satire, is 99% truth. I once bought a special edition cassette, that was inside a tin-can that you had to open with a can opener.

I went out with someone just like this. Would spend hours just talking, monotoned, over their records/music they recently purchased. Although we are no longer together, we are still good friends and yes, I still get to hear all about his new purchases, regularly. ❤️🤘🏻

I bought a book from 3rd Man Records that had a 45 that was on the inside of the back cover and you had to peel away a cardboard piece to open it and listen to the record and I couldn't get myself to do it. I ended up buying a second book so I could listen to the 45.

This is a prime example of my phone listening in on me. I have never watched Portlandia or searched anything about B-52s, but a radio morning show was actually talking about this scene with the boxset yesterday on my way to work. Then this pops up in my feed.

Actual Garbage So did I, and I found them generally tp be sweet and some of the coolest, at least most interesting, regulars we had. They always knew who they were looking for and the album/song name. I actually had a guy come in one who thought I'd be able to figure out what band he was talking about by humming about 2 bars worth of a song, and then got irritated with me because I couldn't figure it out. Thing is, it changed every time he hummed it :p Anyway, I'd take these types over the mystery hummers any day!

Katie Pierson, the red head, owns a bunch of Airstream trailers she rents out at a place she calls Kate’s Lazy Desert in Landers, CA near Joshua Tree. I worked there a short time. Tim Burton stays there often. She’s ok. She has one in upstate NY somewhere but calls it Kate’s Lazy Meadow. Just sharing

that’s actually a sick ass box set, especially for $120. that’s a lot of stuff.
I think a lot about how great the other actor really is in this scene. I feel like I have been that guy politely listening to my friend go absolutely bonkers over something debatably cool many a time (though this box set is pretty legit)
That's a good comb.
B-52's are fun. Went through their discography once, they have other songs other than the one or two that are played on the radio.. who knew.

Athens, ga. is the Portland of Georgia, if you subtract the university football crowd. I live 15 minutes outside it. The B-52s have a music star of fame thing here. It's guitar picks instead of stars, 1 block of downtown outside the Georgia theater, as well as R.E.M. and others.

I actually once sold a box of collected stuff by pop gods The Judy’s (who I saw play with the B-52s on the Mesopotamia tour!) that literally had all that kind of stuff included - color vinyl, rare singles, boots, plastic doodads, flyers, handwritten stuff from the band, *and an official Judy's comb!* - on EBay… but I got close to $1,000 for it!
