Palantir what got me the most when I realize it was the teddy bear shown through the video as it was a gift from her dad and she keep the memory with her even though she forgot.

most people interpret that her father sent her off into space to avoid dying from a massive event. she can use the tablet to change the view.

the earth was ruined. So her dad built her a spaceship. And he only had enough room to build a ship that could fit her.

EXACTLY! YES! I mean wtf? It really puzzles me, that not 1 person that I showed this to, could understand this simple story...So I recommended that they watch it at least 2x and no one did it, because they thought they got all the details...So I always have to explain the plot which makes me wonder why I even recommended it to these people in the first place.

It’s simple as, “I am here because my father has given up so much for me. Though I am alone here, even if I have no one to talk to, I will be strong and I will live for my father.” Message is, “parents sacrifice so much for their children, even if it meant they had to lose themselves apart of the process, they wish the best of you and they’ll always build a *shelter* for you, they’re always there for you.” That is the main message Porter Robinson wants to get across. You don’t need to comprehend anymore than that.

From what i can tell is that the world was ending and her dad was trying to save her and let her live. Beautiful video. And very very emotional without many words.

The (last) number of day without message correspond at 7years. In her simulation with the plain and the rocks, she see a swing at a tree she did not draw (you can see looking at the tablet with surprise) and contact with the swing prompt a first wave of memory. the, on the day of her 17th birthday, the tablet draw a city by it self, and she fall true all the saved date in the tablet, throw as an invisible spectator of all those slice of her old life with which she can't interact. (they are, by definition, just 3d videos) In the end she land with a massage of her father on the tablet. this message is in Japanese, but a translation said: "To Rin From: DadThere was far too little time left after you were born. I wonder how much love I was able to show after your mother passed... Seeing you cheerful and well gave your old man courage.It really would have been better if we could have gone together, but I couldn't make it work. I thought I wanted you to forget everything and go forward...knowing you, you'll be okay. You'll realize your loneliness, and surely remember me.I believe that you'll grow strong and read this letter. I wish we could have made more memories. I'm sorry. When you were little you probably didn't understand well, but now you should.I'll say the words from that day once more." So... Here you go. Hope it help.

It seems you might have to rewatch the music video to asborb everythng, but if you do, pay attention to the reflection outside her spaceship, when she's leaving Earth. You see the other planet collide with Earth.

I'm totally not crying even though I watched this like a hundred times already.... 😭

There are definitely at least a couple of major points about the animation that I don't understand why some people have such a hard time noticing XD For instance: Several people got the impression that she's stuck in a little glass box? Pretty sure that's just what she invented to be like "her room" in this VR simulation because she's clearly running through fields and exploring the worlds she creates in several scenes. Her dad saved her from the total destruction of Earth. That part was slightly more ambiguous but you do actually get a glimpse of a little planet smashing into the Earth just after she gets sent into space. I feel like some people really just overanalyze all the little tiny things and miss some of the more blatant imagery. Also I recommend looking up the translation for the message she received from her dad at the end.

fun fact: in the end when we see her in the pod there is a digital map next to her and it looks like there is a set destination. My guess her father found either a liveable planet or set the pod to go to the ship every other human survivor is located. Thank you for your reaction, as well as the call out from my request. Made my day :-D. Shelter is actually a very complex short / music video. There is a lot going on in the video, each little flash tells a LOT of information, but you don't realize it at the time. As many have already described, it is an apocalyptic event that has ended humanity. There are little hints throughout the video that weren't mentioned by others that flip by, little by little, forming the story hidden in the story. For example, there are some lighting effects that mimic the breaking of the horizon as one celestial object nears another. 2:28 shows this. 2:59 does as well. Small fragments of memories are creeping into her consciousness. Some others like the image of the object in the background in the bath are more obvious. 4:16 also shows something more insidious as she playing in the sand box, she joyfully shows two round dirt balls colliding towards each other in her play, not realizing that she is depicting her and her fathers impending demise in her innocence. There is something much deeper in this for me however, which is why I wanted to share it with you. For me this was a real tear jerk-er. I am a father of three girls, and this message of sacrifice for his own daughter broke me down to tears. The dad in the video, knowing he could not save her, provided her with shelter to continue as full a life as he could provide her. And at the right time, reveals to her the truth about her situation. What can any parent do for a child when nothing can be done? The answer is 'everything'. That message feels so true to me as I almost lost one of my own daughters to tragedy and in that moment I felt that same helplessness, and reacted the same way the dad did. I provided for her with everything I could, even if I could only protect her for a short time. Thank you for this treat. Also, as I've said before, pace yourself girl. There is a lot to see and do in this big wide interwebs, be sure to spend the time for you to enjoy it. We will take things when they come, but if you aren't happy and healthy and enjoying yourself, then the ride isn't worth it.

As far as I can tell she is one (maybe the only) survivor of a catastrophic event on Earth. Her father was a scientist who designed and built a small spaceship to rescue her, unfortunately not having the time to construct one big enough for two. Her mind is in a type of virtual reality and the tablet is used to control her surroundings. That letter she gets at the end is a message from her father, programmed for delivery when she finally remembers the traumatic experiences that led to her current conditions.

This video made me think alot, as well make me cry.

I dont get why people dont get the basic things, the first time i watched this, i cried so much that my parents had to ask me why and showed them the video and they cried as well and hugged me. The fact that the dad was in an emotional turmoil but didnt let anything hinder him from trying his best to save his daughter from the world ending apocalypse of two worlds colliding together and the emotions just overwhelm me, the what-ifs are just so provokingly tempting and the starvation and hunger as i crave for the sequel. All of it washing over my meager underdeveloped brain and inexperienced mind just made me FEEL about what could the characters in the video is feeling. So i dont get how such a strong surge of such just fly over the brains of the adults in every singke reaction video i have watched. even my parents cried the first time they watched it, so whats the difference?? why???

The premise is; a planet was going to crash into the planet, but her dad designed a special spaceship and sent her into outer space. The iPad type device allows her to create her own world so she can draw what type of world she wanted to be in. But as she sees all those worlds in reality she's still in outer space wired to the ship.

YES SHELTER, man this song is amazing. I think the one thing you missed is the during the flashback, that implies some world ending event. Rewatch it again with that in mind and maybe things will click.

Rin's story goes as follows: The worl is ending. There are multiple scenes that show this. At one scene, you can see the ruins of Tokyo, qnd a large planetary object hovering ominously above. In another, a tv shows a satellite image of a large planetary object within the lunar orbit, ready to impact Earth. The planetary object can also be seen briefly in flashbacks and as a large white object falling from the sky while in the simulation. When her father first learns of the collission force, he begins work on a self sustaining life pod with virtual reality capabilities. After it's completion, he celebrates every holiday and Rin's birthday all in one night, giving her one last moment of happiness with her father before sending her off, saving her from the end, but unable to go with her. Fast forward 8-10 years. Rin is now 16. Over the years, Rin has almost completely forgotten about her old life, having been In the simulation from a young age. The simulation her father made was her world, and being alone was just apart of it. But then, starting with the swing, her memories begin to return. Then, finally, like a broken dam, the memories flood back, the simulation forcing her into the world she was born in, Earth. Suddenly, she remembers EVERYTHING. Her father, her home... And how it's all gone. Now she knows that she is the last living thing from Earth. Her home is gone. It was then that she finally realuzed just how alone, and now, scared she was. Thats when she received the message from her father, more than likely pre recorded, saying a bunch of things, such as: "I wanted to come with you, but there was no time." and many other things. This brought her back from the brink, and calmed her down. But niw she lives with the knowledge that she will forever be alone. However, if you pay close attention to the screens inside the pod, you'll see that the pod is on a trajectory towards the sun that is altered as it reaches Earth's orbital path, implying that at least SOMETHING is there. Thats pretty much it. A story of loss and loneliness. PS She was never trapped inside a box, think of it as her bedroom. She can leave when she wants, shown by the scenes of her walking around.

You're right, I want her to be able to process the series before jumping into new shows. I also don't want her to be put off from picking up an anime, she thinks is like RWBY. I could already imagine some people suggesting Puella Magi Madoka Magica as a feel-good series for coping with Volume 3.
