Porter Robinson "Nurture" Reaction + Review

Important back story to this album: Porter Robinson explained in an interview that this album might’ve never even happened because of his previous album worlds, Porter Robinson thought worlds was the best he could do on an album, so he got really depressed and stopped and delayed the release of nurture. Porter Robinson didn’t want to upset his fans by releasing something that couldn’t hold up to the same energy as worlds. The only reason why this album happened is because of his mom, Rika, his brothers and his dad. His mom taught him the meaning to nurture (care for and encourage the growth or development of.) telling him to be easier on himself, Rika bringing him happiness and telling him to look at things with optimism and hope rather than cynicism, his brothers having a taste that he can rely on when he’s lost his own perspective on his work. Porter Robinson also spent tons and tons of time working on this album not experiencing life, not going out and doing activities, falling in love, etc, which also led him deeper into depression always working on Nurture taking no time to actually living and doing other things. That’s why this album is so beautiful, Porter Robinson explains that this album is about him getting out of that depression and finally going out do living and experiencing the beauties of life other than working on this album and finally finding peace within himself and realizing that life is truly beautiful and he shouldn’t take that for granted and he should spend time realizing the beauty of the world and the beauty of life. If you get the Nurture vinyl Porter Robson writes inside of the vinyl saying “Nurture is about the things in your life you can change. There’s little we can do about our nature, because that’s what’s given to us, so we have to turn our focus to the things we can affect. For me, it was the decision to confront the anxiety, uncertainty, and fear of failure to charge on in pursuit of writing meaningful music even when it seemed impossible, I think the best thing that we can do is to find something that gives us a strong sense of meaning, and pursue it relentlessly. There was -and is- a strong temptation to succumb to despair, irony, and nihilism, because it’s not hard to find suffering in our world, especially when it’s incessantly served to you, but there’s also so much beauty, hope, and joy out there if you seek it out. My wish is that when people listen to Nurture, they’ll be reminded that life is worthwhile, that there’s a purpose in your existence, and that you can meaningfully change things for the better.” “Only you have you’re memories your relations, and your talents. All of those things are worth cherishing and preserving.” This is why this album is so special

As a huge Porter fan it was nice to hear a fresh perspective on this album. Your thoughts about dull scythe were very similar to mine on my first listen, over time I grew to love it, and it became one of my favorites on the album. I heard somebody describe the song as "something desperately trying to exist, but doesn't know how, and eventually figures it out and shows its true self" It hits home a lot.

The vocals are all Porter on this album. Except for the bonus track on the Japanese version of the album "Fullmoon Lullaby", and the sample on Musician is from Kero Kero Bonito but i'm not sure which song. I actually forgot Unfold was on here nvm lol

This album feels like spring mixed with intrusive thoughts lol Which is why I love it 😂 When you say parts of it are sweet it’s usually when it’s actually dark… he refers to “mother” as mother nature and Look At The Sky is about surviving not wanting to be alive… so it’s this sweet sound with dark thoughts.

Hey Shelby, I think you missed the overall message of the album in the lyrics. Yes the feeling and mood is unique and has a dainty quality, but people love this album so much for other reasons too. when you take a deeper look into the lyrics of songs like Musician, Get Your Wish or Something Comforting, it speaks to how the artist had to overcome depression, success fantasies and self-doubt in order to write what you are listening to now. And Trying To Feel Alive is about how it all doesn’t matter and its just a part of his personality that is a gift. I didn’t hear many comments like this in your review and encourage you to listen to it again through this lens! Or watch a podcast or interview like his with Fantano

Thanks for the insight! I make my reviews as “initial” reviews so lyrics wise I usually need more than one round of listening to catch all lyrical complexity, especially with albums like this where the music in itself is so ear catching on a first listen. It’s hard to catch it all in one full listen. Hope that makes sense!

  • @Ent3rname06

I appreciate you listening to this album very much! EDM (though I’m not sure how other people classify Porter’s music in Electronic) is a genre that not many people like, but Porter put’s his own twist on it and I love it! Understandably, it can be hard to take in this album’s message on first listen, especially with how the songs are laid out. But I do hope you can, in your own time, go back and really take it in! Thank you for the reaction, Shelby! Have a good day! Stay safe!

I love all types of EDM, and Dance too. Sadly the problem with EDM compared to other genres is because how saturated the landscape has become, everything sounds so alike, and even though this can be said about other genres, it feels a lot more so true with EDM. Thousands of sound alikes, it’s like a needle in a haystack getting tracks from people like Porter Robinson, Madeon, Odesza, Flume, Skrillex, KOAN Sound, Noisia etc. in between the releases we’ll hear from so many other artists in the landscape.

@@Cohen- I think the difficult thing, too, is that those EDM artists, that we love, had to change with the times and make more mainstream type music. Not to say their music isn’t good, we just wish we had the original stuff back

I've been to two porter robinson sets at the last two second skies and I gotta say that hearing these songs live really push the impact of them. One of my favorite memories of being at one of his concerts was him mixing up his own lyrics to Bloom because he was so lost in the moment and trying not to cry- as the song is about his now-fiancé Rika. It was SO sweet.

Shelby, I'm so glad you reacted to this album. A few years ago, I discovered Nurture when I hit rock bottom. It changed my perspective of life and has made me want to live life to the fullest. When I see people here reacting to this album, I find joy in watching their faces light up. It's really odd and different from what you hear on the radio. But that's truly the beauty of it.

Tw// Porter has helped me through so many tough times. Every time I think about/try to end it all, to end the misery, clear the burdens I carry, for when I watch the sky or for when I walk and see how small I am to the world, seeing how meaningless my life feels, and all the things I've lost, I listen to Porter's music. I embrace that darkness, that loneliness, the emptiness, and it makes me treasure what I do have, the experiences I've been through, without them I wouldn't be who I am now. I look at the sky and see the beauty of the colors and not the loneliness the vastness of it brings me. It makes me feel ok to cry because I can now embrace the warmth of life. I will always struggle with these thoughts, but the music will always help to give me hope, for when I'm alone.

13:50 well... as far as I know he uses quite complex vocalizer to remix his voice into female sounding one. You can spot it while he is singing these female parts live during his shows - while having pitch changes typical to not singing off the tape.
