The Springfield Armory Prodigy 1911 DS is already a very flat shooting pistol, but it can be even better! I had the opportunity to shoot a ported Prodigy this weekend and it is sweet! If you have a ported or comped 2011, let me know in the Comments and don't forget to Subscribe!

    In my experience. If you polish all your parts. And tune your sear spring you can get a fantastic gun. I just tuned a prodigy all original parts and it was night and day a different gun. Next thing I’d do is tune the recoil and main spring and you can order those parts for like $30. I’ve found that if you polish all the MIM parts and deburr the plastic grip module you’d be surprised at the performance you get. The real problem with MIM parts is the QC/ ruff, rolled and burr edges polish those

    Ports definitely work.. Im just not a fan of the huge window cut on slide.. also the ports are tooo spread apart… Look at Monsoons lucky 7 ports & Vulcan Ignus ports.. they are close together and help gun shoot flatter.

    Wonder what the formula is for a perfect port per barrel length. For example we've all seen several types of ports from a couple to 4,7 and even 8 (4 on each side) and there's combination ports with comps that would be interesting

    Im surprised neither have the EGW or Dawson Precision magwell yet. Think you may need a heavier recoil spring if you port/comp it. If memory serves correct with the flatter shooting it also may need heavier spring and/or grain ammo. Did you use the red vibra tite? Gel?

  • @sawtoothtactical404

    @sawtoothtactical404

    I used the blue Vibratite and it's worked great. I've thought about a Magwell, but the shape of 2011 magazines are so easy to reload, I haven't really found a need for that. I'm not a competition shooter or anything, just a guy that likes to have fun shooting and making videos, but I'm sure my Prodigy project isn't done, so we'll see what else it gets in the future. Right now, I'm waiting for the EGW stainless ambi safety to come back in stock, then I'm thinking possibly V8 porting...

    @@sawtoothtactical404 ya, my ambi safeties on my 5" seems really wonky...almost like one side wants to work independently of the other. I really like how the bottom of my palm feels with the magwell...i think it adds another layer to the grip....hard to explain.

    I was gonna say that the ported prodigy looked like it had more muzzle rise than yours! So I looked again and sure enough that was the case.. It looks like it might be a little faster but it just goes to show that you can't just put ports anywhere and at any angle.. You have to do your homework and check out the engineering go get the optimum benefit..

    i didn't know you had a Prodigy. I have been really considering one recently. I have some questions. 1. When did you originally purchase your prodigy? Apparently there is a gen 2 out now. Is yours gen 1 or gen 2? 2. Prior to your modifications did you get any malfunctions if so approximately how many and what kind? 3. How many rounds do you have on it? 4. Now that it is modified have you gotten any malfunctions and if so what kind and how many? I'd appreciate any insight since you actually own one of these.

    I love my Prodigy and definitely recommend it. I got mine about a year ofter they originally released. I put 1,000 rounds through it stock and had one stovepipe during that first 1,000 rounds, then I had the EGW kit, Atlas trigger and lightened springs installed and I've put another 1,000 or so rounds through it since then. I stopped counting a while back, so I'm not certain on the actual round count now, but it's only had one malfunction since the upgrades, but I think it was ammo related. I had one round that just didn't go off, but I've never had any other light primer strikes or any other issues, which leads me to believe that one was the ammo. It's a fantastic gun and I believe that Springfield has fixed the issues that some of the earlier ones had. Mine has been as reliable as any other pistol I've ever had and it's a joy to shoot!

    I like mine, but since I'm not in the U.S., this was pretty much the only "inexpensive" option. Assuming you're in the states, it might be better to save up and buy a Bul Armory 2011, heck even their striker fired lineup.

    A good friend of mine did. It's his first port job, but I think he did a pretty good job. He does pin & weld jobs for my local gun store and did the pin & weld on my 14.5" and it's absolutely perfect and these ports are definitely effective.

    8# recoil spring shouldn’t exist in a 4.25” gun. 5” yes.. It shouldn’t have a cut in the slide either. Just like my Staccato’s of similar lengths they run 13# ish recoil springs. No “marvel” cuts. I thinks Skipz invents stuff to take people’s money to be honest. I don’t think he does the kind of work people think he does and he definitely doesn’t address some of the real concerns with guns like the Prodigy.

    That port job is ugly and probably not very effective. I have V8 ports from Skip on my 4.25 and it is flat shooting, mag dump fast and flat. Proper porting does eliminate recoil almost completely, those are janky ports lol I promise you, the V8 ports are WAY more effective than those 3 giant spread out ports. You'll be very happy, so do it! If we were anywhere near each other I'd let you shoot mine, it's fully built 100%
