FOR EVERY1 H8ING ON THE VOCALS..... Don't consider the vocals the centrepoint as they are in more popular genres - instead, consider them as a mere additional texture, not central to the mix, like just another percussive instrument. The best metal vocalists don't even really sound human sometimes. I love you all.
@kotw1432

Yeah, vocals in a great deal of metal genres play a very different role than vocals do in other genres, or even in more classical forms of metal.
@TheSurrealist.
4 жыл бұрын
That’s the thing that makes Metal, especially more extreme and experimental Metal, really niche. The way you perceive Metal isn’t the way you’d perceive other forms of music. To most people it “just sounds like a bunch of noise” but to people who like it we consider things like musical texture, convolution, unconventional musical structure, the role that vocals play in music which is very different in Metal, and experimentation. So many people won’t like that. They want something more easily digestible and that’s fine. It’s like how lots of people don’t vibe with surrealism. I’ve met a lot of people who don’t like Salvador Dali because it’s not conventional enough for them to enjoy. That’s just some people.

If you aren't really familiar with metal, don't go into this expecting Iron Maiden type stuff. In fact you could argue that this is closer to noise music like Pharmakon. With this band it's less about the riff and more about the horrific atmosphere the whole creates.

The issue is with music like this we're hitting the point where "metalhead" is too vague. You'd be hard pressed to find a metalhead who can't enjoy some Black Sabbath or Judas Priest. But once the music starts to bear resemblance to large, industrial mining drills fucking each other while someone is choking to death, you lose me. A metalhead can mean someone who listens to Portal, or a guy who's really into stoner metal. Makes me wonder if the stuff I listen to sounds worse to people who are into stuff like Portal.

Nice, finally someone reviews something I've been looking forward to for awhile. Solid review, great record.
I like Husk the best, mostly because of the end of the song. It just keeps going, and never stays the same. For some reason I always have it playing in my head, the way the riffs change and merge into one another. It's incredible.
Awesome review, Anthony! Speaking of dystopian records, what do you think of Lustmord's The Word as Power album?
For people going to check out this album: If you are not the kind of person open to musical structures being fucked with and experimented on you’re going to hate this. I’m not saying “you won’t get it, man” or anything pretentious like that. I’m saying it’s noisy, it’s experimental, it doesn’t use conventional song structure and it doesn’t give a fuck. If you’re expecting anything with a 4/4 time signature and relatable lyrics about relationships or life you’re gunna have a bad time. It’s Portal.
I highly recommend returning to Vexovoid after this. I wasn’t big on it at first, but it takes quite a few listens to pick everything apart. It’s definitely my favorite Portal album until now.
I loved the suffocating feeling of their old sound. excited to hear this new stuff

@@arunkeshavadas7171 I'm pretty sure it started after The Fader published a nonsense hitpiece claiming that Anthony panders to the alt-right with his (now deleted) second channel thatistheplan. After that people started joking that Anthony puts racist and pro-Nazi messages into his videos like "nice video Anthony, but did you really have to start singing 'Deutschland über alles' while performing a Hitler salute half way through?"; silly things like that. And then it kind of evolved from there into Anthony just doing generally bad/gross/mean things in his videos, like in the above comment.

It's hard to listen to for people that LIKE death metal. It's really great though. Bands like Portal and Gorguts are revitalizing what was becoming a stale genre for me personally. Music like this is going to take a bit to settle in for new listeners. I bought my first Gorguts CD and didn't end up liking it for 2 years lol
This album really is that good. I haven't been able to stop listening to it, and I was anticipating it for a long time, 5 years since a Portal record, and I heard through the grapevine they scrapped a lot of material due to being unsatisfied with it. I'm glad they took their time to craft something so freakishly extreme.

the outro of the final track Olde Guarde is one of the scariest things I've ever heard. its hard to explain - like why do you like ice cream. its partly 1) the subversion or rejecting of typical rhythm/melody so that when you get bored of typical music you can go listen to something crazy, 2) the dark themes are sometimes cathartic, 3) the cool riffs and loudness can be very exciting. im sure theres more but thats what came to mind and that i could articulate
