Finally a tractor beam for the common man! Now if you can just make some DIY hoverboards and force fields. Then if somebody makes some DIY flying cars and quantum teleporters and warp drives, that'll knock out most of the best sci-fi tech come to life.

I wonder how far out could this reach theoretically if you used a larger, shallower parabola. Or how large a mass you could control with more powerful industrial grade transducers with crazy high decibel ratings. If you dynamically manipulate the angles of the transducer array to change the focal point, it could probably pull or push objects or even launch objects instead of just holding it there at a fixed position. There're probably more advanced things you could do with the harmonic layers, too... The interference pattern could have the side effect of pulsing the air like those soundlaser things and make an area with audible (deafening) sound if it's designed wrong... Maybe not though.

Wow?! An array of carefully aimed ultrasonic transducers to create a convergence of standing waves! I thought there would need to be deflection from a wall just beyond that point? I’m seeing the results, and it’s baffling, just how cheap and ‘back yard’ that device seems to be?! I would have thought that there would be so many different careful things to consider. He carefully and knowingly checked for the polarity of the transducers. I don’t even know how much volume of fluid to put in my ultrasonic cleaner, or even where I might look to find the formula to make that calculation. This guy must be the one I should ask! The future looks brighter thanks to demonstrations such as this. Thank you very much for sharing this!!

Very cool, and I like your wiring and assembly skills. Do you also have something that explains the theory of phased arrays and how they can "tractor" material? If you were able to modulate the frequencies for each transducer individually, while managing the phase, could you move the object around?

  • @UpnaLab

    @UpnaLab

    7 жыл бұрын

We have two Open Access papers that try to cover the principles of phased arrays and tractor beams: www.nature.com/articles/ncomms9661 aip.scitation.org/doi/full/10.1063/1.4972407 . The device of the video can move particles up and down, we do this by changing the phases. You are right, in a normal standing wave you can use small frequency variations between the two sides to create a travelling wave but in the tractor beam the only way (so far) is changing the phase.

seriously ?! can you imagine what kind of devices would be needed ?! they would have to be operated by chemical explosives to produce powerful enough shock waves and still have to be operating at least thousands of cycles per second and that kind of punishment would literally pummel a human into a lifeless floppy rag doll, all bones would be broken and internal organs munted. consider the experiment where American scientist's used timed explosions to self propel a metal drum up into the air, one was let off every second or so from inside the open end of the drum to make it fly up, you'd need that, but in reverse and many of them all aimed at YOU....what a way to fly and DIE !

I was very impressed when I saw that project, but then some people say that it just blows columns of fog and that most of the footage are quite 2D. A focal point in air does not affect light much, but in fog it could have an effect. We have tried to control fog with ultrasound but it is not very effective, perhaps strobing the light at the fr of the sound so that it is synced with its tiny vibrations. Sorry, not very into displays. In any case, we will try to keep opening our ultrasonic devices so that everyone can do research with it.

Ive exchanged a couple messages with the holovect creator, sharing some of my own whirlywig volumetric contraptions. He seems pretty straight up guy. Theres a 30 minute tech show where he shows off his device to the host as well, but you're right, Id definitely love to see some vids of a static cube, where only the camera is changing position for example to settle any questions. Interesting points about the fog and tiny displacements. Maybe there's some other behaviour going on with refraction for example. Anyways, again, very cool demos with your tractor, and thanks for all the technical info you share! Cheers

high mass dictates different design principal and would require something such as magnets and electricty to pull off . This is low mass as those things 'levitating' are little foam balls with basically no weight or mass. This is not a tractor beam - it's not pulling anything, it's just trapping the foam in small vortex of air current .

Good luck with the noise when you need to use audible frequencies to levitate large objects

@TILEN FABE However, the audible frequencies' wavelength are in the range of 1.7cm to 17 meters. Most, if not all foods reside in this range. Obviously doesn't include the people who likes their rice come grain by grain.

I thought sound waves couldn't propagate in the vacuum of space would this only have atmospheric borne applications?

What if a shielding gas was released around the object you are trying to capture could the sound waves propagate within the gaseous cloud?

To claim it's a legit tractor beam it has the expectation of working in the vacuum of space otherwise it's just a sonic atmospheric turbulator.

Jeff Mezzanotte but, wouldn't the gas quickly disperse, especially in a low-pressure environment?

Of course it wouldn’t work in space. It is an impressive accomplishment though.

Unless you don't fry the circuits with such batteries... yep I suppose that might work. But this is not a real tractor beam, it emits a field inside the dish but not outside. It's a levitation tool, but no tractor beam. Tractor beams lift objects up to a specific distance but here you cannot speak of distance. Hmm... seems like we will see professional tech in near future, anti-gravitational devices and stuff like that. One day we might use that for vehicles. If any normal person can do something like that with such "primitive" components, professional research organizations might improve the technology and make it usable for a variety of things. Hovering cars, cleaning devices, "weapons" for law enforcement to capture criminals very quickly and without doing any harm, personal hovering devices similar to jetpacks. Mass Effect is coming closer to reality :D

Now turn the bowl upside down and make it at least 30 ft in diameter. make sure your vessel acts as a dialectric waveguide lens and synthesize the force of gravity (or anti) and use that to publicize attempts at new flight capabilities. Now watch the MIB knock on your door in just a few days!
